1 Movie Review: BODYGUARD by FENIL SETA (2/5)

The festive season brings smile on everyone’s faces, including the filmmakers. Especially if they manage to release their much awaited flick during a major festival! Audiences are bound to come in hordes and the producer is bound to laugh all his way to the bank! Since couple of years, Eid has proved to be lucky for Salman Khan with his Wanted turning out a huge hit and Dabangg a big blockbuster and craze of the nation. Hence, a lot was expected from this year’s Eid release, Bodyguard! And why not…after all, it co-stars popular face Kareena Kapoor alongwith Sallu, music has apparently worked and promos promised paisa-vasool entertainment. Unfortunately, that doesn’t happen! Bodyguard is shockingly disappointing! There’s nothing in the film that really impresses a lot, something that you expect from Salman’s Eid release!

The story of the movie: Lovely Singh (Salman Khan) is a bodyguard who’s given the job of protecting Divya (Kareena Kapoor), daughter of business tycoon Sartaj Rana (Raj Babbar). Lovely strongly believes in ‘work is worship’ and hence religiously performs his duties. However, while doing so, he gets over-protective for Divya and she finds it difficult to lead a normal college life. Hence, she comes up with a plan – she calls Lovely and pretends to be her lover. Lovely doesn’t fall for it initially but soon gets smitten by the anonymous caller. Divya was sure that Lovely would get distracted by this mysterious lady and she in turn would regain her freedom. However, things take an unexpected turn.

2 Movie Review: BODYGUARD by FENIL SETA (2/5)

To put it in simple terms, nothing works exceptionally works in Bodyguard – neither the love story, nor the villain track. Even the comic scenes got irritating after a point. The film begins well with the traditional Salman’s entry followed by the title song. The scenes were interesting till the scene where Salman is asked to leave the classroom. From here, the film went on a downhill with some scenes making the film watchable.

The action scenes got too irrational this time. And yet again, Salman’s shirt flies away in the climax! It was a pleasure to witness it in Wanted and Dabangg but this formula cannot be applied in every film I guess as its losing its charm.

What works are few individualistic scenes that were very well executed notably the beginning scenes and the intermission point. The film has some bravura performances and is shot at stunning locations (all in India)! When you assume that the film will end in a formulaic and clichéd manner, you are in for a surprise. A series of twists occur in the tale towards the finale. And what’s more, it’s all done quickly sans any melodrama. It’s these factors that save Bodyguard from becoming an ultimate disaster!

Salman Khan is the soul of the film. This was an atypical Sallu role but he does it with aplomb. He looks supercool in the bodyguard look and is pleasure to see him bashing up baddies, getting irritated with the anonymous caller and over-protectively being around Kareena everytime! You might not like the film but Salman would surely win your heart!

Kareena Kapoor looks stunning like everytime and yet again delivers an excellent performance. Watch out for her in the song Desi Beat and Teri Meri! Hazel Keech (as Kareena’s friend Maya) has an important role in the film and does a fabulous job. Reema Debnath (as Savitha) lends able support. Rajat Rawail (as Tsunami) irriates! His commencing scenes raised some laughs but later on, he was anything but funny. Asrani was forgettable. Raj Babbar was as usual. The villains – Mahesh Manjrekar, Aditya Pancholi and Chetan Hasnraj – don’t have much to do in the film. Karisma Kapoor’s voiceover (when Kareena calls Salman anonymously) was damn good! In fact, it’s difficult to point that it’s not Kareena’s voice!

3 Movie Review: BODYGUARD by FENIL SETA (2/5)

Himesh Reshammiya-Pritam’s music was quite alright. Songs seem forced in the narrative, especially Desi Beat and Teri Meri. However, Teri Meri was soulful and the other songs that work are I Love You and the title song. Sandeep Shirodkar’s background thankfully wasn’t loud and was beautifully subtle. Sejal Shah’s cinematography was undoubtedly topnotch. Angelica Monica Bhowmik’s art direction was beautifully especially in the Teri Meri song. Vijayan Master’s action was too over the top this time but nevertheless was a treat to witness.

Siddique, J P Chowksey and Kiran Kotrial’s screenplay could have been a little better. Many of the sequences seemed too unbelievable. The dialogues were fine but one wishes Tsunami, the sole comic character, was given better dialogues.

Siddique, writer-director, comes up with the 4th version of Bodyguard (the original in Malayalam and remakes in Telegu, Tamil and Hindi). One wonders what’s so special about the plot that 4 films were made on it! The story was interesting but the direction at places was inappropriate. A lot of things happened too fast in the film but then it was better than dragging. Also, it was nice to see how he wrapped up nicely and quickly towards the climax. However, the forced villain track and funny moments seemed out of place in a love story like this and one wished Siddique had neatly blended it in the narrative.

Some good scenes of the film:
1. Salman’s entry
2. Lovely Singh reaches Divya’s house
3. Lovely Singh’s first day in Divya’s college
4. The intermission point
5. Lovely Singh rehearses with Divya in the park
6. The climax

On the whole, Bodyguard fails to impress and engross. The villain track as well as the funny moments gets too over the top unnecessarily while the love story was bit bland. Except few individualistic scenes, performances and the climax, nothing else works in Bodyguard! However there’s no vulgarity or bloodshed which would be appreciated by family audiences. And die-hard Salman fans will like to see their favourite actor in a romantic role after a hiatus!

My rating-** out of 5!

Thanks for the review… but I don’t think your rating corresponds with what you have written… just a few points to makeSalman’s entry: Lated for 12-15 min- song plus action scene
Lovely Singh reaches Divya’s house- another 5-10 min sequence
Lovely Singh’s first day in Divya’s college- I guess 10 min or so
The intermission point (A mindblowing scene- one of the best of the movie)-10 min
Lovely Singh rehearses with Divya in the park (The park sequence)- another 5-10 min one (One of the best acc to me too)
The climax- lasted for what 15-20 min including the superb action scene-That is you loved what 60-75 min of the movie (found it notable enough to mention in the review)Rest the song I love you and Teri Meri (another 10 min ) also you seem to like-” The film begins well with the traditional Salman’s entry followed by the title song. The scenes were interesting till the scene where Salman is asked to leave the classroom. ” Thats first 35 min”Salman Khan is the soul of the film. This was an atypical Sallu role but he does it with aplomb. He looks supercool in the bodyguard look and is pleasure to see him bashing up baddies, getting irritated with the anonymous caller and over-protectively being around Kareena everytime! You might not like the film but Salman would surely win your heart!”I agree… but how can you like Salman in the movie and not like the movie itself- for bodyguard IS a Salman Khan vehicle (and both are inseparable I guess) Some points are contradictory- but I guess its okay…I ask you once again to reflect on the rating you have given- I would have given a 3 after writing the same review :)

@ An enjoyable read Fenil and you described elements of the film very clearly.

@ Piyush – even those who have disliked the film have loved Salman which is a good sign. I just hope that now no 1 says he again played himself here lol :P

absltly rating does not match the review..in anywys its an individual choice.

Dwnpiyush & aryan 29-Thanks for your comment and for your calculations! Nice work!

I also loved one more sequence…where Sallu tells a girl to say ‘hello’ multiple times…so add 1 more minute making it 61-76 mins duration of the film I liked. However, the rest of 55-70 mins of the film is what I didnt like and weighed heavily against the portion of the film I liked.

Agreed Salman, soul of the film, was marvelous. However, what about the script and dialogues given to people like Tsunami that were outright disappointing?

Also agreed that a film like Bodyguard has loose ends. But it was too much. Sallu gets shot on his shoulder and yet goes easily to the station. Not even for a moment, Sallu gets a doubt that Maya is not Chaya.

And lastly, many scenes were good but only individually. Teri Meri, for eg, was excellent but seemed forced in the narrative. Same with Desi Beat. These things mattered a lot to me and hence even though I might have liked majority of the film, I still came out of the theatre dejected.

And to conclude, pasand apni apni. Mass entertainers like Bodyguard are bound to create diverse opinions. Sme people didnt like even TZP and 3 Idiots!

    Thanks for the comment…keep rocking!

Just came back after watching Bodyguard and must say you have been very kind to it. I won’t give it even 1 star. PATHETIC!

I’m sorry Naveed and other Salman fans but this has to be the worst movie of the year. The last time I felt so angry after watching a movie was when I saw Chandi Chowk To China. It seems like the makers signed Salman and then decided they don’t need to do anything else. This guy Siddiqui must be banned from directing movies.

Saw BG yesterday.i loved it and i can say its better than wanted ,ready, dabangg as it has a proper story which his other movies lacked. SAL-MAN as usual is the soul of the move but i found him better in DABANGG,kareena’s best role n performance after JWM, Rajat rowail (the producer of ready) deserves special mention because he was hilarious ,everytime he came screen people started LOL “kaun bhai ki practice ki maa bhen kar raha hai” ROFLLLLLLL. I do agree that it drags a little in the middle but the fight before the climax is crisp and the climax which lasts about 15-20mins are the highlights of the movie :D .Also i found the action sequences in BG a bit tacky instead of being better n slicker than dabangg’s but seeing the record breaking collections i dont give a fuk about it :)

    My rating 3.5/5 :)

BTW i had predicted 60 crores for ormax’s BG’s 5 day prediction contest :P mere prediction ki dhajiya udd gayee hai magar mujhe koi afsoos nahin hai :D

Guys just now back from BODYGUARD…. 1 word KICKASS movie….. Take a Bow … Salman Khan ….. BHAI … u have done it yet again … and that too in such a LOVELY way …. Lovely Singh reporting Madam…

The audience was very much pepped up at the beginning of the show … and at the entry of Salman … many (including me) just started shouting … and whistling… :D

First Half is a nice flow of romance + action + light comedy …. I love You song is just right for the mood of the movie….

Post interval movie becomes more serious and emotional. Teri Meri just takes it to another level.

Desi Beat …. hmm this sng comes eratically but still I love that song soo didnt mind…

Movie is BEST till last 20 mins or soo…..
The action scene before this 20mins is also MINDBLOWING… !!

    ——
The TWIST in the tale in last 20 mins …. Now this is going to invoke EXTREMELY opposite reactions. Some will LOVE it and for some it will just not work.

EX: For me .. I LOVED it to death…. but my wife she did not like it. She wud have rather loved a regular ending.

    —-

Performance: Salman, Kareena are top notch … others are good ..
Music: All songs are rocking …. Desi Beat is not needed

Audience Reaction: Till last 20 mins … EVERYONE was enjoying … but last 20mins …. again some liked it .. some didnt…. but Overall it was positive…..

My Rating: 4/5 … Go for it GUYS…

    —–
PS: Salman PUNCH dialogues are missing. Only 1 “Mujhpe 1 Ehsaan…”
Its not a regular masala movie, infact its a ROMANTIC movie with some action.

Naveed, I watched Bodyguard in a high-end multiplex where the audience isn’t very vocal about their feelings. Though there were some Salman fans there and they kept clapping and whistling now and then.
