BY which criteriaaaaaaaaa is Murder2 a blockbuster? BoI by their own admission uses DS per Print. Going by 25 cr DS , what is the print count and what is the DS per print count? The fact is so may of the Murder2 patrons were saying it is sure to make 60cr. Looks like it will fall 10 cr short. That is what I meant when I said, a film falling from Friday on Saturday cannot trend that well in the long run, because obviously there are some chinks.

Of course it is fantastic performance. I am just trying o get a hang of the criteria used by BoI for deciding Superhit, Blockbuster etc.

“a film falling from Friday on Saturday cannot trend that well in the long run, because obviously there are some chinks. ”

    You are wrong here.

A SS heavy film will fall on saturday as that class do not have holiday on saturday. And Friday they have more numbers as there is excitement.

A movie falling on Sunday compared to Saturday is clear indication of a flop.

    Case in point – KItes.

  3. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 4

Yes they dont have holidays, but the word of mouth should create some excitement if the film is realy good and it should hold. There is no reason for it to drop. One cannot be mathematical about it, but a drop shows it has not been liked THAT MUCH. I can bet for Delhi Belly or ZNMD, even in single screens, there has been no drop and rather some increase.

@Utkal – Ready fell on Saturday and look at its collections.

  5. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 5

Shilac and Raju Guide, I dont know, I am just stating my logic. One explanation could be the Friday excitement for these films was extremely high.

  6. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Utkal – the explanation given by Raju is correct with respect to movies with heavy SS opening. Case in point – Ready.
But, in case of Dabang, there was a very slight increase on Saturday in spite of SS heavy opening. The reason is – it was liked much more than Ready, it was a craze. Also, multiplex contribution might be higher. For Dabang, the Saturday jump was around 5-7% whereas the Sunday jump was 15-20%

  7. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Friday is also not holiday for SS , if sat is not holiday.
I think Ready dropped on Saturday had given indication that it will not cross dabangg in final run.

I do not know with which other movie M2 can be compared but I can say that if some other movie opens like M2 and hold on Sat and show increase, will definitely cross M2 final total.

Vivah was different story. Movie did not opened good even had bad reviews mostly calling it regressive. But movie has great WOM and performed extra ordinary in many centers.

Utkal- “BY which criteriaaaaaaaaa is Murder2 a blockbuster? ”

Very simply due to the fact that on an investment of 12-13 crore (all inclusive) they are sure to get a similar profit (12-13 crore) with a distributors share of about 25 crore. just from the theatrical run.

Once the non-theatrical rights are accounted for it will get even bigger.

But I thought BoI gave their verdicts based on DS per print. So is their any consistency to their verdict and should they be taken seriously?

This is what they published last year :
There were 13 films which scored at the box office in India this year. The following films were the ones which did Above Average business or better. All verdicts only take into account box office collections against the release size.

    1. Dabangg
    Distributor Share – 77 crore
    Prints – 1675
Share Per Print – 4.60 lakhs
    Verdict – ALL TIME BLOCKBUSTER

    2. Golmaal 3
    Distributor Share – 57.75 crore
    Prints – 1550
Share Per Print – 3.75 lakhs
    Verdict – BLOCKBUSTER

    3. Raajneeti
    Distributor Share – 48.75 crore
    Prints – 1475
Share Per Print – 3.30 lakhs
    Verdict – BLOCKBUSTER

    4. Housefull
    Distributor Share – 37.25 crore
    Prints – 1550
Share Per Print – 2.40 lakhs
    Verdict – HIT

    5. My Name Is Khan
    Distributor Share – 37 crore
    Prints – 1425
Share Per Print – 2.60 lakhs
    Verdict – HIT

    6. Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai
    Distributor Share – 29.75 crore
    Prints – 1275
Share Per Print – 2.35 lakhs
    Verdict – HIT

    7. I Hate Luv Storys
    Distributor Share – 21.50 crore
    Prints – 950
Share Per Print – 2.25 lakhs
    Verdict – HIT

    Q. Everybody in the media and trade marks gives verdicts by cost against business but why do you go for release size against business?
    A. It does not look that anybody in trade and media marks up by cost against business as the biggest hits of the each of the last five years using cost against business are Vivah for 2006, Bheja Fry for 2007, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi foe 2008, Three Idiots for 2009 and Love Sex aur Dhoka for 2010 but nobody has these films as the biggest hits as far as we know. We will be putting up a return on investment number in our revenue section but will not give verdicts based on this as likes of Milenge Milenge and Break Ke Baad will be amongst biggest hits of 2010.

BO verdict is given only on two parameters, as far as my little knowledge goes

    1) ROI

    2) DS

Never on print average or attrition etc.

@ Tango – any news on Chillar Party or is that it for the film? So far only Taran has commented on the film am hearing or seeing nothing else.

I agree with your criteria Tango. But I am just quoting what BoI says. And then I am asking do BoI folow their own criteria?

Utkal I think BOI (best to ask them) just put it up as an info. I think Doga ji can have his say on this too.

Naveed- Check out koimoi site Komal has spoken on it and confirmed what I told you that the pick up that Taran talked about only came in Maharashtra. Once I get Film Information I’ll put up the centrwise numbers.

    More later.

shezad, my question to BoI is: Is your rating based on DS per print? Or based on RoI? Make up your mind. I have no doubts about theaters , screens and prints.

Tango, it’s not just for information. They specifically agree that they go by business against release size ( no of prints)

Utkal dada, I know where you are coming from but it is not like that. I disagree totally with what BOI are saying and as I had said it is another example of their stupid commentary.

Look at it this way, if suppose ZNMD has 1000 prints and they end the week with about 42 crore and have about 4.2 lakh /print and in another scenario if it had 750 prints netting 35 crore with say 7.5 lakh print average, would it have been called a bigger hit? NO. It is the 42 crore and 35 crore figure that matters with respect to the 55 crore cost.

Also, in case of a single screen dominant film like Murder 2, the print average will be quite low but it will be a much bigger hit than ZNMD.

A distributor who has paid 12 crore for Singham in Bombay, will pump in as many prints as he can to get that back and as soon as he can, not bothering about how much it’ll fall in week 2 (if he has got most of his audience in the first week) or even about achieving a high print avg.

Another thing is, with a print average you don’t know how many were at the single screen and how many at multiplex. Say movie X has a print average of 2.5 lakh, if there are 300 single screen and 150 multiplex it will be great, but if the scenario in switched it’ll be poor.

Another thing is, a single print (physical) is used for 2 or even 3 cinemas simultaneously using staggered timing, especially at mid sized towns. So how will you account for that.

    Hope you get it.
