A Long Note on SRK: NG Reflections!

I remember writing -A Very Short Note on SRK! That was when Ra.One was in nascent stage.Today,as heard the film is near about completion and screen-test would be run amongst children[primarily Aaryan and his friends].

I don’t know how does the man feel after having woken up from slumber and discover everyday that he is the biggest superstar of contemporary Hindi Cinema . That newspapers carry an article on him, negative and positive both…that Bal Thackrey is himself interested in demolishing him over any trivial issue that might have irked him…that every other day a new star is born and SRK is deemed to be dethroned or out of the race or mauled or bulldozed or finished. Now ask me,how do i feel when everytime the man proves it eveytime that the battle is far from over!!

The man has lost much of his energy, energy being the prime driving factor behind his success. The kinetic [by his own admission,he is kinetic, not potential] energy that he exudes  now is just an archaeological remnant of what used to be in his efflorescent days!!  Still, its remarkable that he carries each and every role with a fervour unmatched. What has actually transpired is that SRK has metamorphosed into a much better actor..one can compare him to Sachin of 90′s-aggressive and dominating to Sachin of 2000′s-calm,poised,relaxed and more mature. Everyone has a favourite pick.I maintain i loved SRK of 90′s more! The maturity in acting, that is still refuted by many, has been at the expense of his energy. Now SRK seems to have sacrificed his energy and has solidified it into a less energetic yet highly emphatic acting. It’s more like maintaining an equilibrium and sometimes with age on the wrong side, one needs to sacrifice attributes that would certainly not help in the long run any more. Logically,SRK is at a juncture where he has reached the pinnacle of success, zenith is below him,and nader is out of question. But still one can clearly see the man evolving or trying to evolve. Now that’s certainly a sign of longevity when you sustain to innovate and evolve, where success does not gratify you and closes any doors of excogitation.

You might have noticed the Suniel of KHKN,to be loving and charming.Paradoxically the Rizwan or the Suri seems as much charming and loving as Suniel, just that the frame of reference with respect to age, persona and repertory has changed completely. Now drawing comparison with any other star in particular would be disservice to the calibre of both stars. He has carved out a niche for himself. He has poignantly poised himself on a pedestal from where one and last flight of the falcon would just take him beyond any comparisons with contemporary stars. Recently,he has been on wet ground,a bit shaky,a bit hesitant to go for the kill and that is natural keeping in mind the quality of competition he faces. He is apprehensive, might be in between the horns of dilemma, might be anticipating, might be formulating, might just be scripting something that always has put him ahead when any competition has presented itself to him. SRK,going by his recent interviews has become less aggressive. Some say,the new found humility is because of stiff competition he faces.I would rather comprehend that sometimes age imparts that humility to you.Of Course being a public figure,he is choosing words carefully but the hypocrisy factor is limited to what one can behold on daily basis in normal social frame of reference. He has become more spiritual,as is evidenced by his interviews, remembers his parents always indicative of thae fact that he might just be asking them for the strength to sustain where everyone seems to be calling his day finished. They say, fighters never give up,i say…SRK is the perfect example.

I have iterated that he is shaky and nervous, but that’s just a matter of moment. If you look at his next ventures, barring one with VB,all are genres alien to him. He still loves taking risks. He might not enjoy the same confidence of audience as Aamir does but speaking in the same vein,he enjoys the love and adulation of audience more than any contemporary star at present. He might not promise a quality movie, but he does promises to enthral you whenever he is on-screen.He might not be a trademark of versatility, but still has managed to re-create magic over and over again with probably the most number of romantic outings that any star has done in past two decades. That’s a job far more tougher than being versatile. He might not have registered a single 100 crore+ movie on the domestic B.O. front but certainly,as i again iterate, has poised himself perfectly on a platform where 1-2 movies grossing huge would make him far from competition,as a long list of hits support him at the back. He might not have innovative marketing strategies but he neither needs one.His RNBDJ grossed 86 crores, just 2 weeks after the biggest terrorist attack on Indian soil highly indicative of the fact that, his name spells something more than quality of cinema, something beyond versatility in acting, something incomprehensible, something enigmatic. You can define anyone’s success, but defining his becomes a job impossible, highly impossible, keeping in mind that every detractor has a set of fixed points against him and still he has not failed in excelling and surpassing himself time and again.

With respect to the upsurge of Aamir,SRK seems to have lost a bit of relevance.I would definitely agree to that.He needs a ‘summer extravaganza’ or a ‘diwali bonanza’ to curb any further competition. But i would definitely not agree to the fact that he is not definitive any more. He is,just that he needs to prove it once again.Of course it’s saddening to see that he still needs to prove it,but on the other hand that imparts the audience a golden chance to behold the Golden Boy of Bollywood once again go for the kill. Knowing and having followed SRK,i can perfectly say that he cannot fail, because winning is what he has learnt and that too in a hard way. Ra.One comes at a time when, the ground seems shaky and the movie seems dicey. Yet,he is unfazed. He is just heating things up, apparently seems like a last valiant effort to regain a former glory…….No,for me this is not the case!It rather seems that he finally is breathing outside his comfort zone. Had he to collect a few more hits..he knows how the audience loves him and he knows it better than any one of us. He is driving on the faster lane now,he is pumping up the adrenaline, risking all, betting everything. If anyone realises it or not,but SRK has put all his eggs in this basket and is colliding full frontal with a response from  the audience that no one can be definite about. Now,this is serious stuff.Rather than playing a stroke that he knows the best,he is hooking and upper cutting the ball…which is a definitive sign that SRK is far from over.He is very much there, just that he now needs to perform on a grand scale. No shame in agreeing to the fact that he now definitely needs to break some barriers. The barriers are not important here, the fact the whether he can break it or not becomes a matter of immediate interest here.

The major drawback that he had was to stick to his comfort zone. He has enjoyed immense success there. Literally made a career out of romantic roles,What is heartening to perceive,is that,he now treads an unpredictable path.I maintain post 1995,SRK fell into a trap of self-annihilation.He definitely rose to the topmost rung of the ladder, but in the process, lost the vigor gradually. People say,Swades,KHKN,CDI,MNIK are his best to date..i maintain Darr and Baazigar are still unmatched. That was SRK at his best!! Not afraid to take risks. When stars feared being branded as villain in those days when romance was gradually replacing action,SRK did three back to back roles with negative shades.Had he continued experimenting,SRK would definitely be at a better position today. Not that he is not, just that his filmography would read somewhat better. But inspite of this fact,he amazes me with his survival in Bollywood where actors who repeated themselves time and again were rejected by audience sooner or later.Perfect example-Sunny Deol..the screaming did not help for long. Now,if SRK,has managed to come this far with his so-called repetitive expressions[to which by no means i agree],it further confirms my faith that his success cannot be explained. You can question its merit, but not its reality. The best part is that he definitely has enjoyed a far richer emotional connect with the audience than any other star at present.

I am perfectly happy that he has left no space for mistakes. Perfection is not suitable to his persona.Infirmity defines him.He has his space where he goes back and thinks if things go haywire in real life. The thinking room is open 24*7. He might not be deified as Bachchan was,but certainly will go down in the anals of history as the last genuine bollywood superstar with Aamir and Salman closely at his heels.Infact,i feel that this trio defines the last golden pages of Bollywood, the book!! Thereafter, the taste has been bland and jejune.

Treading a path unknown, driving a new vehicle, facing stiffest competition ever, the man speeds off with his next two extravaganzas. It remains to be seen whether it’s a crash or it’s a perfect drive. Undoubtedly, the most loved and the most hated,he [as i previously said] has an emotional connect w ith his audience that is unparalleled and unseen in the contemporary era. With people recognising bollywood single-handedly via his name on foreign lands, with him being the most prominent face of bollywood to the world…the paradox is that the ‘Baadshah of Bollywood’ needs to thwart of fierce competition back home. The game is far from over, the detractors are far from quiet, the supporters are far from silent…all around him are either whispering, shouting,or screaming..the man walks in the middle unfazed, relatively silent, keen to prove something. Reminds me of dormant volcanos!!

Miliand, I must say when you write an orignal piece, you are ouststanding. I or some one may disagree with the gist of the article but there is no doubt your writing skill is very good. But When it comes to comment some time your stand is too sycophantic(sorry if use of this word offended you.) So pls come regularly with this types of orignal write ups. I agree that 2011 is gonna be defining for SRK.

@milind this article from SD for U. I read another article by SD on SRK and that was the best on SRK i read. I am searching that and will pst ASAP.
(Sandipan Deb, former editor of The Financial Express, heads the RPG Group’s planned magazine venture)

I have had many conversations with friends about this. As, I am sure, you would have had. The question is simple but important, though the answer won’t make any difference to your or my life. Yet it needs to be pondered: Why is Shah Rukh Khan the superstar that he is?

He is not as handsome as Hrithik Roshan, is hardly a great actor. (the only line I cannot agree with) He is not as good at fights and stunts as Akshay Kumar is, and does not have the comic timing or dancing skills of a Govinda. Yet he is by far the most popular actor in the history of Indian cinema. And remember, in the current cutthroat firmament of film stars, he is one of the very few who did not have a prior connection with the Mumbai film industry. No father, no godfather, no influential mentor. The man is not even from Mumbai! Obviously, his success, fame, popularity and wealth are totally of his own making. So why is he what he is?

Here is my thesis, birthed by numerous drunken discussions with concerned citizens. Four attributes, and a fifth one that uses the four and takes full advantage of them. One, in every film he has appeared in, Shah Rukh, you can make out, is doing his best to entertain you. There is a palpable energy he brings to the task; he desires to please and is willing to do anything to achieve that goal. He does not enter a role; rather, he uses it to appeal to the viewer directly, as Shah Rukh Khan, your friend, your uncle, your younger brother, not as a larger-than-life superhero or icon. He craves your love, your acceptance as a family member. He is happy to dance like any other fan in a cricket stadium (and he knows exactly why and when, for maximum effect).

Which takes us to his second attribute, that he comes across — and also makes sure he does — as an ordinary guy. For proof, compare Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh as Kaun Banega Crorepati hosts. One the stately aristocrat, the other a playmate. A contestant who got a hug from Amitabh took it as a gift, the one hugged by Shah Rukh thought he was a pal. And it’s not just a generational issue.

The third quality that Shah Rukh has, and his most visible one, is that he does not seem to take himself seriously (I am sure he does, but it’s a persona he has built for himself, but every persona must have some root in the person). Whether in television interviews or in most of his roles, or in the excellent film Om Shanti Om that he produced, he is ever-willing to poke fun at himself, or convey a gee-whiz wonder at his own spectacular success. He masks his indubitable intelligence with a boyish mischievousness that is endearing to child, man, woman, parent. He is both Oliver Twist and Artful Dodger, and you know it, and want to do a high-five with him for that.

These three qualities contribute equally to communicate the most important aspect of Shah Rukh Khan Superstar. He is non-threatening. If you are a man, you will be at least mildly uneasy if your girlfriend kept gushing about Salman Khan. You wouldn’t like your sister to have Ajay Devgan as boyfriend, sitting in your living room, brooding morosely. But, it’s very likely that you wouldn’t mind too much if your wife stuck a poster of Shah Rukh on the cupboard door. And if your sister brought him home, you would instantly make him your drinking buddy. This is a rare trait that the man has, and has nurtured carefully.

To all this, Shah Rukh brings a unique self-awareness, a very clear understanding of what he is as a brand. This is something no other Indian film star has, except Aamir Khan. Shah Rukh seems to know exactly what he is, and what he is perceived as, and he stokes that image efficienctly and – seemingly — effortlesly. The boy-next-doorness, the playfulness, the non-sexiness, he carefully manages all his product attributes to sustain a superstardom that seems curiously achievable to the ordinary bloke. He seems to be a guy whose back you can slap, a chap you can play gullee cricket with. Very few stars in world cinema ever managed to do this. To be a star, and to be Everyman. An enigma that looks like a simple fable. A complex structure masquerading as a child’s painting. To do what you do and no one notices, yet everyone applauds. This man is a very intelligent man.

@Dj: thanks… and no i am not offended. While commenting,i believe,as a fan,to hold a point up in favour of your star..you need to have attiributes not plaeasnt.. :-) ..dat is just an open honest admission..of course i sincerely hope that the article seemed honest.Again can’t say that i was impartial..but of course was semi-neutral..and that was the best i could afford..coz a man can leave anything in the world,i believe but not inclined state of mind.

The article echoes similar views as mine but in a much refined manner.A great read!!

    Thanks for commenting!! :-)

Lovely article, I think all the points said are brillaint. SRK has carved a unique niche for himself in Bollywood like I agree Aamir, Salman and the Big B. Everyone else in this current generation is a pretender. I think with the current step Bollywood is taking, those 4 may be the last.

In a separate note, I was watching TMK, and came across the most outrageous subtitle ever. For the infamous dialogue “….. loot ti jawani….”, the subtitle says:

“You cannot save respect of your wife and you cannot catch TMK as well”.

what elsecan be said about the movie?

ya i know it is a gem of article. But there is another article of SD about SRK on OUTLOOK. I have not able to find that link. That article strats with the Line what SRK said to Big B on KBC when in the first season he along with KJO went to KBC. In the episode when Bib be said SRK that he knew KJO when he was too small(jab karan bahul chota tha). In response SRK said Amit ji aap ki hieght itni hai ki sabhi chote hi dikhte hain. If anyone finds that article pls provide the link. Otherwise I have print ot that article and i will type it.

    @MILIND–nice one man. loved it.

i love shah rukh. find him unique, charming, hugely loved, gifted actor and more than that someone very, very special.

for his coming years. churchil once said”It’s not enough that we do our best; sometimes we have to do what’s required.”. now what srk required to do is very much possible for him.hope he can do it. .but if not, i do believe “form is temporary, class is permanent “. he has the class.and so always remain special.

certainly it is not the best of the time for him.but he raised his bar higher.he tasted a superlative stardom that being no 2 is a failure,73+ cr is underperformed..but having a higher bar helps in the long run.but again now there is a aamir khan.who makes least mistakes, gifting some memorable film which aren’t challenged by any bwood flick.more than all he owns an actor’s ultimate dream”audience faith”.so aamir deservingly ruling . but again after the business opened widely with ghazini release, srk has only one proper release.mnik which is not a well made movie again not so audience friendly. so 2011 is defining for srk in term of business, status, audience faith.

all the best.i wish a rocking coming years for him.one thing my personal request would be “you are a great actor.but please do the great acting in a film which will win the race against time.”i want the good acting in a equally good film.

@milind – wonderful write up… Though I would have been happy if u wer neutral rather than semi-neutral… Agree with most of the points…
But I would like to state that comparing Sachin to SRK was a bit off cos both are diff profession… Films also require physical health but it can b dealth to an certain extent by choosing interesting scripts…. It’s not necessary that after 40 one can’t b aggressive in films… U can take the example of Aamir or Akki who have reached their peak at a later stage of their Carrer….
One more thing that the godfather idea is BS…. A godfather can’t guarantee a HIT in a Debut film…. What better Ex can I give other than Abhishek Bachan who is the son of legend of AB… Influence can get u movies but can’t make u Act…
I don’t think SRK’s career is any dwn at the moment it’s only that he is less interactive with the media wch makes them write up about against him wch happ to Aamir when he was against the media… For me he is more consistent in 2000 than 1900 not in terms of BO wch may b a bit lower but he has rose as an Actor from 2000… I would prefer SRK in 2000′s anytime compared to his 1990′s… Salman, Aamir n SRK have reached a stage wer some flops don’t make any damage…. They are in their peak wer they can experiment…. I my opinion all three should go for the kill without holding back themselves if they would like to rule for a few more years… Audience is changing and there is cut troath competition but due to their past records they have the advantage to experiment wch they must make full use of or they ll fade earlier than expected….

I for the start thought it can be a fan-ranting. I really nowadays hate fan-rants, whether it is with respect to SRK or any other actor.

But fortunately this article was not a fan-rant. Brilliant piece Milind bhai. Agree completely on most of the points you have mentioned, except that he has lost bit of his kinetic energy. It is there and will remain.

  20. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

me too agree with sneha that srk’s career is not any down at this moment.before the so much talked mnik he had 3 back to back bb.srk fans as well as srk haters both has huge expectation from srk.the normal ppl don’t think srk is in down only srk fans and srk haters think the same.

“Salman, Aamir n SRK have reached a stage wer some flops don’t make any damage….” again have to agree with sneha..

The comparison b/w sachin and srk was not direct. It was just made to elucidate my point of view. It’s like comparing similar phenomenom between two people rather than comparing two people!:-)

    @BBOI: thank u!! I got a new term today..fan-chant!! :-)

@Ghost: thanks man! and yeah, agree on most of the points dat u made!

I completely agree wat most ppl above say… no one has right to be derogatory and abusive.
But I have the larger Q?
Fame is juxtaposed with infamy. When one sings glories and they r also not true reflection than one doesnt raise that Q? So i rmbr that famous and very pertinent Quote of Stephen coovey, where He says, ” When you pick one end of Stick, you pick other end also”. that’s law of nature…
So when u choose fame, u choose other extreme also… there are billion mouths and one cant shut them…

So before reforming the world, Reform oneself. Dont mind reforming but mind reformer

Why to feed them. its like fire???

  24. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Great set of ideas put together Milind. A good mix of retrospective and introspective thoughts blended to show SRK’s present and to pan out his future. I am sure this is your best write-up, firing all cylinders, uncompromising and pompous much in tune with SRK’s personality.

And for the fact that he has to keep proving his credibility time and again, I remember this – It is easy to climb the ladder and reach the top, but to sustain and retain that position, it takes a winner.

He is a STAR, undeniably yes. Though i’d prefer more of a Baadshah or a Swades or a CDI.

    Thanks RJ. :-)

Yeah,i was more than 95% unihibited while writing this piece. AS ALREADY ACCEPTED INCLINATION IS WHAT A LOVER CANNOT FORESAKE!! :-)

Yeah, you just mentioned a word that i had missed..credibility. SRK has the credibility but he needs to cement it with good roles in equally good movies as GHOST said earlier. SRK as rizwan in a first rate movie[although i personally count MNIK as a fine attempt] would have looked unassailable in terms of acting execution.

Sustaining is another aspect.I would rather call it thriving..SRK is now in Charles Darwin world where it’s all the survival of the fittest!!

Yeah he is a star..the most brightening one!! Remains to be seen how the helium reaction goes in the coming times!!
