good post, i hope Utkal – who is on a “Posting” spree with an anti-Guzaarish agenda – will take it easy now…..chill dude, if u didn’t like it….ok but don’t go on making a zillion posts against guzaarish…..

Ideaunique: Not a question of ‘ if you did not like it”. I haven’t even seen it. I am just letting the people in the forum read the reviews of some of the more knowledgable and insightful critics ( whether I like them or not), : Rajeev Masand, Anuoama Chopra, Kahalid Mohammad and reviews from reputed publications ( as against Trade Papers) : India Toady, Mint, Hindustan Times, The Hindu, etc. Sure there are some good reviews, and they have been posted by other people in the forum. So now you have access toa whole range of critical assessment.

  3. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

well utkal u can post them in single thread also. instead of new posts.

even none of HR fan did that apart from one guy in begining.

and if one start psoting positive reviews in new posts , i am sure they will create more posts than negative ones.

It clearly shows ur negativity. but well u were negative about movie, i think ,since it is announced.

Hrithik may win national awards for guzaarish and also filmfare.

Hritik may as well get the Filmfare, but what is more certain that Ash will get two nominations, for Raavan and Guzaarish, and win it for Guzaarish. And with a blockbuster Endhiran under her belt this is going to be Ash’s year. This is also the year of Ajay Devgan with two Blockbusters and a stand out performance in OUATIM. ( Personally I am not in tune with people mistaking a portrayal of a disabled person as great acting. Unfortunately, a bland Al Pacino or Rani Mukherjee ora an autistic Dustin Hoffman or Sahrukh Khan are likely to sway award juries more than subtler and more challenging performance without an element of disabilty. So yes, Hritik may win it.)

With 2 flops Raavan and Guzaarish, and a blockbuster where if The Great Khali played the heroine, it would still be a blockbuster .. you are calling this Ash’s year?

Guzaarsh is a flop?? when did that happen?? it seems utkal has a disciple & follower in form of rosh.

Dunno about Raavan, but Raavanan was neither a flop nor a bad film. I really liked it. Aishwarya was pretty much the main protagonist and her performance was remarkable. (Vikram is fantastic as well) People should seriously watch it.
Oh and let’s wait for Guzaarish before calling it a flop. It is already critically acclaimed though.

My take on awards (if anyone cares lol):

As for awards, as far as actresses, the only other notable performance was Vidya in Ishqiya IMO (well in the movies that I saw so far at least). Nominations will be probably like Aishwarya twice (with her winning for either one), Vidya, and two fillers like Kajol in WeAreFamily for example.

As for actors, it will be between SRK in Khan and Hrithik in Guzaarish. Loved Ajay in OUATIM but Shahrukh’s act was just incredible, maybe his best ever, which means something for such an actor. Ranbir will be nominated for Raajneeti maybe. Maybe Arshad Warsi also. Or maybe Salman for the BO results of Dabangg. SRK will probably win though.

@Kintou, Raavanan i suppose might have been good or at least did good business in Andhra because the movie is about that dacoit from Andhra. Whatever the case, the performance of Ravanan should not be in consideration. Hindi Ravan was a big disaster.

Guzaarish, there is no doubt will not recover cost, hence a flop. Regarding critical acclaim, I see very mixed reviews both from critics and from audience.

Might Aishwarya still get the best actress award? Yea, she probably will, but then we all know what good bollywood awards are. My contention was this is not Ash’s year BO wise by any measure. I dont care what critical acclaim her performances get.

Rest, I agree with your prediction for awards, but then who cares about those awards.

It is definitely ash’s year. which other actress has made that kind of impact? I can tell you, right now thee will be top directors waiting to sign her. Box Office has nothing to do with performance.

We dont know whether Guzaarish is a flop or not but it certainly is not critically acclaimed. The critics with any kind of reputation or credibility ( as against trade pundits masquerading as critics) have given it at best average ratings . People like Rajeev Masand, Khalid Mohammad have given it two stars. Anupama Chopra and Mayank shekhar have given it 2.75 and 3 stars. That is by no means particularly critically acclaimed.

But regardless of the rating of the film, the performances of Hritik and ash have come for almost universal praise, in case of Ash, the praise is near unanimous.

Even with reviews by people like Taran Adarsh taken into account, for Guzaarish, Overall Rating: 2.87/5. Not particularly acclaimed, as I said.

    As against 2.87 for Guzaarish, the average rating for some other movies at the site are as folows;

    MNIK: 3.75, OUATIM: 3.27, Raajneeti: 2.95,Dabangg: 3.27

( This should remove some popular misconceptions.)

@utkal- u take a note from a site thats taken hardly 8 reviews nd given the average doesnt mean everybody is takin this crap!! Does it?? Nd plz, ppl have their own judgement, u dont have to preach everyone about which reviewer is knowledgeable nd which is not!! Ur negativity is too much!! Nd if u want positive reviews, then it wud be like shahrukh khan said in Baazigar, ‘Sailaab aayega madan chopra, sailaab!!’

Mr Callway, I have taken this site because that is the best that is available for aggregating reviews, Show me another aggregating site and I will quote their figure. The point is even if it is 8, they cover the full spectrum from Taran Adrash to Raja Sen. So including more won’t change the picture drastically I can assure you.

And where is the negativity in stating facts?

On the other hnand, by calling Guzaarish critically acclaimed are you not showing ‘ negativity’ towards films like Raajneeti, OUATIM, MNIK and Peepli Live?

Such gems must be bookmarked. ;)

    utkal,

Explain, how calling Guzaarish critically acclaimed can affect “films like Raajneeti, OUATIM, MNIK and Peepli Live” ??? Is there a percentile based system as in “critical acclaim” of Guzaarish reduces the scores of other films???

Even I have developed a distaste for SLB’s style of movie making and I am very much skeptical about watching Guzaarish without having volume control and status bar control handy(DVD). But why are you adamant on spreading the negative reviews without giving it one watch?

I havent said guzaarish is critically acclaimed or not!! Nd i also havent said rajneeti nd outim r not critically acclaimed!! Infact i loved rajneeti nd outim!! Nd i also dont agree rajneeti 2.95 nd dabangg 3.72 but thats just my thought!!! What i’m sayin is there r much more reviews on web nd each carry a piece of their mind……Nd we can actually get into that nd decide by ourselves nd not thru some site that puts avg with merely 8 reviews!! Nd whats with Khalid Mohammed!!! I mean the guy absolutely hates ash!! Nd he asks ppl to carry pills for headache!!! Wat is he tryin to do?? Review a movie or turn into an oversmart jackass!! I watched the movie, nd ppl whistled nd clapped at different points in movie……Nd after the movie ended everyone clapped, or may i say applaused for the movie…..Noone needed pills there…..Yes lot of them surely needed tissues!! I dont say everyone wud like it, everyone has different opinions nd so does Khalid mohammed!!

    And I should mention Ishqiya : 3.63 and LSD : 3.88

OLd Bash, all I was trying to point out that there have been so many films this year that are more critically acclaimed than Guzaarish. So calling Guzaarish critically acclaimed without giving the same honours to others is unfair to them and in a way expresses an attitude of negativity.

Sailab aayega, lekin kab, qayamat ke baad? ( Let me assure you that Guzaarish’s best ratings came from those critics who were shown the film in previews, before Friday. And most of the reputed critics have done their reviewing, except for Kaveri Bamzai and Namrata Joshi. I will post their reviews when they come out and add their scores for averaging.)

    utkal,

Do you mean to say when Guzaarish was called critically acclaimed, “just like Raajneeti, OUATIM, MNIK and Peepli Live” must have added at the end?

Do you mean if the idea of Guzaarish being a finely appreciated film is fed on to the audience, others films will lose out on the chances of winning awards?

So far, quite a few NG members who have seen it have liked it. Seems like SLB has managed to lure some viewers (typically Hrithik fans) to like the movie enough to go for a re-watch.

Utkal.. I seriously think you should take a break. I know you had problems with Guzaarish from Day one.. but that doesnt mean you spend your energy and time over a movie which you haven’t seen inspite of positive review being more than Negative reviews. Atleast watch the damn movie and then go on a spree of showing your despiseness for such SLB movies..

Khalid Mohammad has been the critic of the country’s leading newspaper for the longest period among any critics I know. Among all the critics we are considering, at least Khalid is the only one who has directed 3 films ( with satrs like Hritik, Karishma, Shabna) and written 6 screenplays.including 3 for a veteran like Shyam Benegal. If he is not qualified to be a critic and is not knowledgable about cinema , then who is? You may not agree with his reviews ( I don’t many times) but that’s not the point. That is why we are taking averages of well-known critics of well known publications, whether we like it or not. blogger on the web does not become a critic. They are merely giving their opinion as members of the public. (Which is vaild, but does not count as ‘critical’ acclaim.)

Saw Guzaarish : not that great but IMO HR shd win best actors award this year . He is amazing.

“Rajeev Masand, Anuoama Chopra, Kahalid Mohammad and reviews from reputed publications ( as against Trade Papers)……”

Utkal, u could have started a new post “Negative reviews about Guzaarish” and dumped all these reviews there……my friend! it is alright if you don’t like certain actors/directors/genre of films – but don’t try to force your views on other by a zillion new posts and endless comments to justify your stand….it is, very honestly, irritating and certainly a threat to the dignity of this site……i hope rohit will not mind my strong words here because I have no right to write here in such a tone but i believe NG is an open forum where everyone enjoys a healthy difference of opinion on any film/actor/director etc. but when it starts going overboard….it sounds quite jarring….

mentioning the name of Khalid Mohamed shows how desparate you are to pull down the movie……..that fella has been kicked out by every reputed newspaper/publication after some time…..and he, ironically or coincidentally works on the same principle as you have adopted here for Guzarrish…..vengeance…….:-) kinship with a like-minded person utkal :-)

IdeaUbique, I have presented the credentials of Khaild Mohammad as a Critic. apart from the things I have mentioned, he has been the editor of Filmfare, and in the panel of Critics who voted for the original list of world’s Top 10 movies for Sight & Sound magazine. Too bad you don’t like his reviews ( I don’t either.)

    Similatrly Anupama Chopra .

“Anupama Chopra is a film critic and book author. She has written about the Hindi film industry since 1993. Her work has been published extensively in India Today, India’s largest English language magazine. She has also written about Bollywood for various international publications such as The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, Variety and Sight & Sound. Her work has been published extensively in India Today, India’s largest English language magazine. She has also written about Bollywood for various international publications such as The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, Variety and Sight & Sound. Currently, Anupama presents and scripts a weekly film review show called Picture This on NDTV 24/7, a leading news channel that reaches more than 50 million households around the world, including India & is present in 56 countries . She is also a contributing editor to Vogue (India).

Anupama’s last book King of Bollywood:Shah Rukh Khan and the Seductive World of Indian Cinema was published by Warner Books in 2007 and was highly acclaimed. It was featured on the editor’s choice list of The New York Times’ Sunday Book Review..

Her book Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (The Bravehearted will take the bride), was published by the British Film institue in 2002, as part of their Modern Classics Series. Anupama’s first book, Sholay: the Making of a Classic, was published by Penguin India in 2000.It won the prestigious National Award (given by the President of India) for the best book on Cinema.”

Or take Baradwaj Rangan ( I don’t agree with the films he defends half the time.), who has won the best film critic’s national award in 2008.

Then there are Namrat Joshi ( Outlook) and Kaveri Bamzai (India Today) and Mayank Shekhar ( Hindustan Times).

These critics are obviously in a different league compared to the Trade Pundits masquerading as critics. But in the averages that I quoted even they have been included. So what are you complaining about.

And why should posting of revies, negative or positive should be irritating to anybody? As I said show me the thread for all reviews of Guzarish, and I will post the reviews there.
