Movie – Anjaana Anjaani (2010)

Cast – Priyanka Chopra, Ranbir Kapoor and Zaid Khan.

Director – Siddharth Anand.

Here is my review of the movie “Anjaana Anjaani”. Produced by Nadiadwala Sons and directed Sidharth Anand, AA is about strangers, as the name suggests. One more addition to long list of love stories which has basically “Ek ladka aur ek ladki milte hain and after all twists and turns, they live happily ever after”. Anjaana Anjaani is no different! Where it can be different is the twists itself.

Aakash (Ranbir Kapoor) is a wall-street freak. He takes his own chances or rather gamble in order to rise to the top. He has his own firm run by himself along with his friends cum partners. A market crash makes them all vulnerable to external debts. His partners blaming Aakash for downfall of their firm, he decides to commit suicide. Just when Aakash is about to suicide he meets with another saddist i.e., Kiara (Priyanka Chopra) and she too wants to suicide. Her problem is, her boy friend Kunal (Zaid Khan) betrayed her.

Here are the various sequences which starts after these two Anjanes (strangers) meet. Whenever these two try to commit suicide, some or the other problem occurs and every time they fail. Finally they realize that something still to be done in their life before they end it. And both decide to “extend” their break for committing suicide till new years eve, which is good 21 days later. Between these 21 days there are many instances where both come close to each and there are moments where they try to console each other and in process coming close to each other.

The movie as a whole is good romantic experience. It actually gives a new lease of life for two strangers in each other to live. Movie has genuine humor scenes and genuine romantic as well. The cinematography is top-notch along with the flow of story of the movie, though with some clichés. Siddharth Anand has done a good job in terms of over consolidation and presentation of the movie. Music is decent, with some songs like “Anjaana Anjaani”, “Tumse” and “Hairat” being decent numbers. The best amongst the lot being “Aas paas khuda”. The only problem though in the music department being, there are lot of songs in the movie, 9 to be precise.

If we talk of performance than Priyanka Chopra as “Kiara” clearly overshadows “Aakash” i.e., Ranbir Kapoor. Priyanka gives yet another brilliant performance. She is definitely beauty with talent. Though the screen space given to both the lead is almost same, but Priyankas performance is more than convincing. Ranbir Kapoor gives a decent performance, though you would feel repetition of performance viz a viz, his previous outings. Zaid Khan does a good job for his cameo in the movie.

Overall, the movie is a good experience not only for teenagers or couples, but for all. It has quite a good amount of humor along with some good songs. The romantic scenes between the leads are no less. The movie never loses its pace, though in the 2nd half it drags little bit. One would not feel lost, as the story has spontaneity. Siddharth Anand gives us a movie which has all the ingredients of 21st century rom-com.

Verdict- 3 stars out of 5, for brilliant to good performance of the leading stars, along with genuine humorous and romantic sequences in the movie. Recommended.

Brilliant performance from Priyanka Chopra. As some say “Beauty comes without brain”, she definitely is beautiful along with some acting skills. Surprisingly you feel like she “acted” better than Ranbir Kapoor. Ranbir Kapoor seems getting repetitive with each movie. Same expressions, thats the problem I see with Ranbir, though his performance is good.

One more addition to the “Hit List” of Ranbir and Priyanka.

Sachin, I may not watch this in theater as rom-com is not exactly my type of movie. Even Endhiran I might not have watched – but I just want to witness the Rajni event in single screens here so will go for it.
I liked Ranbir in WUS, Rocket ..but I found his Raajneeti performance clueless. I may watch it on Tata-Sky later. Even if he is repititve I think he is still better than Imran, Shahid at the moment – and still has way to go. Lets see

    BMS top 10
    Endhiran (U) (Tamil version)
    Robo (U) (Telugu Version)
    Anjaana Anjaani (U/A)
    Dabangg (U/A)
    Robot (U) (Hindi Version)

Thanks Manish for that compliment :)

Pseudo, Ranbir is not clueless in this movie. He has done a good job, but you will feel repetition if we compare his performance. Will wait for your views on Robot.

I remember once SRK tweeting about Priyanka. He said “Forget heroines, Priyanka is “Shero””. That is so true about her. How easily she overshadows Ranbir is amazing, even though the screen space is almost equal.

  8. I.One

Pseudo, it would be better if we can change tweets to either “Anjaana Anjaani” or “Robot” or “Endhiran”. Thanks.

  9. Pseudo

Yes. I am sending mail to Rohit.

  10. moviefreak

“he meets with another saddist ” … @I.One is this a typo or did you just humorously refer to her as a sadist?

  11. I.One

Moviefreak, yes it was just a vague term used for another who comes to commit suicide, after she goes through the pain of betrayal of her boy friend. Its purposefully written.

  12. moviefreak

ah..ok ok, sad person… thanks for the review.. 9 songs is too many

  13. Kimi

Sachin bhai great review…. I think I can tolerate this movie after reading ur review……..

  14. devesh

Sachin Bhai, i beg to differ on some points: Zayed Khan sucked in each scene he was in, really that guy just has a trademark smirk and nothing more!
The development of Ranbeer’s feelings towards Priyanka isnt well portrayed, and ditto for Priyanka’s towards ranbeer. Priyanka’s reasons for suicide also are not good enough.
But yes, overall, its a 3/5, a good one time watch. Music is excellent, and so are the lead performances.

  15. I.One

Devesh bhai, good to read your views on AA. Yes, it has certain deficiencies, but I guess it was in fact good that not much of time was spent on Ranbir taking time in falling in love with Priyanka or Priyanka’s history. It kept the pace going for the movie. Good to know that your view nevertheless Devesh. As you said, its a good one time watch with very good music and performance from lead.

  16. Rex

hey nebody here has seen ‘robot’??

  17. devesh

Saw Robot (hindi dubbed): Total timepass stuff, awesome SFX, awesome Rajni n Aish.
Cons: Pathetic translation of songs, too many songs, really bad music…
Tips: Dont think too much, just go with the flow.

  18. BBOI

Thanks Devesh pra, for those views of yours on Robot. I could not watch it, as it was released in Tamil only. Hopefully next week I will be able to watch it.

Rex, I guess you have got the answer.
