According to reliable source Boxofficeindia.com (as we all believe their numbers are accurate)
Peepli Live
1st week collection – 21.35cr
2nd week collection – 5.58cr
% drop in collection – 74% approx
What can be the reason behind this huge drop in collection?

“thats thing where i point out srk as tom cruise of india.. slowly (hes becoming that)”
How conclusive we can get? We all have habit of making conclusion without understanding the facts. Here is a perfect example. Rooney, you are declaring SRK Tom Cruise of India on the basis of ONE movie. If you remember his last two movies before MNIK in the lead, crossed 80 cr. and 1 nearly achieved 70 cr. MNIK collected more than 70 cr. So, where is your conclusion applicable here. His all last four movies doing average business of 75 crores in India alone! Do we have any better track record? Only Aamir Khan movies have performed better than SRK in terms of average in last 3 years.
Here is little stats for you which will remove your mis-understanding –
Chak De India – 68.00
Om Shanti Om – 80.00
Rab Ne – 85.00
My Name Is Khan – 73.50
Average net India collections – 76.63 cr.
http://www.bollywoodhungama.co.....s/127.html
Where is SRK becoming Tom Cruise here? Its a different thing altogether that MNIK has done more than 90 cr. business Overseas, but that cannot itself make SRK less a star in India and more in Overseas. He always had big market in Overseas. Just this time the movie has done exceptionally well than India. In fact MNIK doing more than 70 cr. is testimony of SRK’s popularity in India.

@sachin or I.one.. error.. in typing quickly

thats wat i m saying. nothing else. (and indeed apologies for bringing such a big comment from u, i should have reread it
and than moved on to write other post that i wrote. as i didnt got time to check comment again)
as of now its only wat we say in maths/science?? a theory.. yet to be proved! thats it.
u can get that by last point-

After watching , felt it was an below average movie and was more like a documentary than a movie.Amir’s Bo pull factor did make an impact in initial days and fizzled out later.

Lol. SRK is SRK. Tom Cruise is Tom Cruise. You wont see SRK jumping up and down on Oprah Winfrey show screaming “I am in LOVE. I am in LOVE.”. Tom Cruise WAS a superstar. People despise him now. He is no longer a force which can draw Audience. He is just a big name. His scientology methods and his oprah Winfrey act lost him many fans.
SRK, on the other hand, is perhaps the most charismatic superstar India has ever seen. And he hasnt started fading yet. Just because his MNIK was a “disappointment” in India (Yet it made 73 crores), doesnt mean he is fading. His last releases has been big hits. Yes, his name might not be enough to give a movie an opening (the status which Aamir is enjoying), yet, when he stars in a movie, it is one of the most awaited movies of the year.

@ihab.. lol .. certainly dude i wasnt comparing their personal life!!! u seem to have taken bechara toms personal life in to it!!
certainly tom wont be hosting oscar for that matter and giving nariyal awards, pulling cheap jokes, certainly tom wont do .. i can go blah blah blah.. but as u have missed the point we are discussing BO!
and on that this is just a draft theory, and it will be true if next two movies fails to cross 100 cr in india. if they the theory goes in basket simple as that.
but atleast with MNIK, i can put forward a starting point! also awaited and most awaited were not factors being compare!
i was just stating comparisions via bo home country and overseas. thats it.
and we need to wait till next two release to confirm it but atleast previous one has started the theory which u cant deny!
But LOL u are on a journey comparing their personal lives ihab!

Dude, I finally got to see Peepli Live. I saw it on Computer. I will be started a thread to discuss about the MOVIE’s merits and demerits.. Not its Boxoffice or Aamir Khan or anything. Looking forward to your comments in it.
Just like you said, I found NOTHING “funny” in Peepli Live. I dont know what people were laughing at in the theatre. Few scenes got a smile on my face and most of the times, I was sad simply because everything which was shown happens in reality.
Anyways, I will be started one in few hours. Want to discuss what was good in PL and how it could have been better etc but one thing I want to tell, I really liked the movie and I would NEVER have seen it had Aamir not produced it.

Sachin,
“1. “Performance at BO means performance at the ticket window how it did in ticket sales.â€
I was giving the definition of BO and I completely stand by this.
On my point 2, you have come up with absolute profit based on investment. I agree that absolute profit is a better way of looking at than ratios. But my point was we do not know the investment for sure in 99% of the cases. We hear different stories and the so called experts tell us different numbers for the same movie.
“And your 3rd remark is contradiction of your own.”
That remark was for Doga because he wrongly said budget when he meant distributor price and it is on DP that he and Nahta base their verdicts on. It does not mean I endorse it.
“And I am talking about BO and obviously I am talking about theatrical run and its relation with cost or investment. Without considering total investment it is futile to make any verdict on a movie. BOM does not work on that agreed, but without considering other revenues, its not possible to judge a movies performance. Satellite rights price is totally dependent on BO success. If movie does well at BO, it will fetch good price and vice versa.”
Why does BOM not use all these Satellite rights and other stuff? Simple reason is that this is not boxoffice. These are ancillary revenues. Why should we be so worried about making a verdict on a movie. Let the individual producer/distributor figure out if they made profit/loss. What we as an audience should be interested is whether a movie is accepted/rejected which can only be told by the theatrical collections.
“If you say that BOI figures or any figures are just speculation than we will never have FACTS.”
I was just saying that different websites have different numbers for what the movie grossed at the ticket window.
Sachin just answer this question.
Lets say a movie recovered all of its cost before release (according to your investment/absolute profit theory it is a success) and this movie made a big zero at the theaters i.e not a single person showed up would you consider it a success?

Doga,
“Sputnik by that definition movies like Kambakthq Ishq(47.5 cr), Blue(40 cr) , Veer(39 cr) and so on are bigger or equal success than say I hate love story(44 cr ) or Vivah(35 cr).”
All those movies were liked by a certain section of audience. When people talk of hit/flop they are implying that the movie was accepted/rejected by the audience.
“Even in USA, movies like Troy and Mission Impossible 3 were called little disappointments even though they did 130+ million domestic but could not totally justify their costs(150-175 million), atleast domestically.
Does that mean that they are bigger success than Slumdog millionaire which made 100+ million on just 15 million budget?”
Troy and MI3 weren’t liked by the audience that much. They were considered average at best. Slumdog was loved on the other hand and it won Oscars. BOM does not even say hit/flop right? They put production budget and domestic gross. If we use similar yardstick most Indian movies will be deemed to have done good.
“Distributor prices are directly proportional to Budgets. So they mostly go hand in hand. A TZP is not sold same as a Ghajini or a CDI like MNIK.”
TZP/CDI are risky/niche films or at least they were supposed to be. Rab Ne was also low budget. If say it was not with Yash Raj and SRK had produced it would he not have sold for a lot? Would IHLS have been sold for the same amount if Kurbaan had not flopped?
“Even back then movies like Shaan,Shakti,Agneepath did as much as other “Hits†of their times but were not called much success due to their Budgets/Distributor prices.”
Shaan, Shakti and Agneepath were probably not considered hits because they did not run till 100 days or so (atleast I know about Agneepath). Shakti used to get a re-release so often till the 90s and I saw it in mid 90s and it had good crowd.

rooney,
‘Paramount Pictures is severing its 14-year-old ties to Tom Cruise’s production company because of his off-screen behavior, the chairman of the studio’s parent company said yesterday in an interview with the Wall Street Journal.
“As much as we like him personally, we thought it was wrong to renew his deal,†Sumner Redstone was quoted as saying in the Journal report e-mailed to reporters. “His recent conduct has not been acceptable to Paramount.â€
The report signaled the end of one of the most lucrative production deals commanded by any A-list Hollywood star and followed other signs that Cruise’s public stature had been damaged by his conduct during the past year.
Days after his latest film, “Mission: Impossible III,†opened to lower-than-expected domestic ticket sales in May, an opinion poll showed his star power in the eyes of the public had dimmed considerably. ‘
“They were reacting to a USA Today/Gallup poll in which half of those surveyed registered an “unfavorable†opinion of the actor. Many cited his off-screen behavior during the past year, including his outspoken defense of his religion Scientology and his blunt criticism of psychiatry and actress Brooke Shield’s treatment for postpartum depression.
Cruise also became the butt of jokes for his manic, couch-hopping appearance on “The Oprah Winfrey Show†last May to declare his love for actress Katie Holmes, who recently gave birth to Cruise’s first biological child, a daughter they named Suri. ”

“Cruise is an outspoken advocate for the Church of Scientology. He became involved with Scientology in 1990 through his first wife, Mimi Rogers.[54] Cruise has publicly said that Scientology, specifically the L. Ron Hubbard Study Tech, helped him overcome dyslexia.[55] In addition to promoting various programs that introduce people to Scientology, Cruise has campaigned for Scientology to be fully recognized as a religion in Europe. He lobbied politicians in France and Germany, where the legal systems regard Scientology as a cult and business, respectively. In 2005 the Paris city council revealed that Cruise had lobbied officials Nicolas Sarkozy and Jean-Claude Gaudin, described him as a spokesman and militant for Scientology, and barred any further dealings with him.[56][57] Cruise co-founded and raised donations for Downtown Medical to offer New York 9/11 rescue workers detoxification therapy based on the works of L. Ron Hubbard. This has drawn criticism from the medical profession,[58] as well as firefighters.[59] For these activities and others, David Miscavige awarded Scientology’s Freedom Medal of Valor to Cruise in late 2004.
A controversy erupted in 2005 after he openly criticized actress Brooke Shields for using the drug Paxil (paroxetine), an anti-depressant, to which Shields attributes her recovery from postpartum depression after the birth of her first daughter in 2003. Cruise asserted that there is no such thing as a chemical imbalance, and that psychiatry is a form of pseudoscience. Shields replied that she would not take advice from anyone who believed in space aliens. This led to a heated argument with Matt Lauer on The Today Show on June 24, 2005.[60] Medical authorities said Cruise’s comments had further stigmatized mental illness[61][62] and Shields herself called them “a disservice to mothers everywhere.”[63] In late August 2006, Cruise apologized in person to Shields for his comments; Shields said that she was “impressed with how heartfelt [the apology] was … I didn’t feel at any time that I had to defend myself, nor did I feel that he was trying to convince me of anything other than the fact that he was deeply sorry. And I accepted it.”[64] Cruise’s spokesman confirmed that Cruise and Shields had made up but said that Cruise’s position on anti-depressants had not changed.[64] Shields was a guest at Cruise’s and Holmes’s wedding.
Cruise also said in an Entertainment Weekly interview that psychiatry “is a Nazi science” and that methadone was actually originally called Adolophine after Adolf Hitler, a myth well-known as an urban legend.[65] In an interview with Der Spiegel magazine, Cruise said that “In Scientology, we have the only successful drug rehabilitation program in the world. It’s called Narconon… It’s a statistically proven fact that there is only one successful drug rehabilitation program in the world. Period.” While Narconon claims to have a success rate over 70 percent,[66][67] the accuracy of this figure has been widely disputed.[68] Scientology is well-known for its opposition to mainstream psychiatry.”

rooney,
The point is most people in US think he is a weirdo for his association with Scientology, his showdown on TV with Brooke Shields and his couch jumping on Oprah’s show. They think he lost it. This has affected his US stardom. The rest of the world does not know much about it or does not care about it.
As far as my id is concerned there is no logic involved. When I created my first email account (on coolmail.com which is no longer in service) I thought of a difficult password to guess and the word sputnik popped into my mind. I had read about sputnik in school. I just used that same word as my id here. You don’t run into “user id is already in use” issue with that.
