Well the question has been pertinent and keeps coming once see movies like Matrix or Inception, which have a lot of things to say apart from what you see on screen.  There have been immense discussion related to these movies on the forums all around.

When we look at the Hindi Film Industry of the number of such intelligent thriller movies produced, we can hardly name any one which has been discussed on the lines of Inception or Matrix for that matter.

The question to all forum members is, What according to you have been intelligent thrillers in Bollywood which have tested your brain and had you discussing it for a long time once you first saw it.

Few names that come to my mind are;

1. Jewel Thief

2. Khamosh

3. Aitbaar – an Indian remake of Dial M

Among all these none of them is ground breaking or something that makes you think about it.  I just tossed them for the heck of it. Let me know what your thoughts are?

Yep Khiladi can be included in it. But what are the original thrillers ? Most of Abbas Mustan films are lifted.

  2. Sachin

Gumnaam is the best thriller of Hindi Film Industry for me.

  3. Tango

As a thriller Gumnaam and Bes Saal Baad for me and as a mystery Mera Saya & Woh Kaun Thi?

  4. rockie_c83

I dnt remember watching as many thrillers in Bwood… Johnny gaddaar was good… infact it was the only one in recent times…

  5. Manish

gumnaam, jewel thief,Khiladi, Johny Gaddar and i wd also add The Stoneman murder which released last year

  6. cticize

I would like to put Chocolate in as well, somehow liked the concept, must be copied from somewhere.

  7. Ali

Agree with cticize that ‘Chocolate’ must be included in the list.
And our Link Man, RKS Bhai is Right that it was Based on Hollywood Movie ‘The Usual Suspects’.

I don’t think any of these movies can be compared to Matrix, Memento or Inception. There has to be some ambiguity or some philosophical or some new concept to have any kind of discussion.

These are suspense movies and once you know the killer/ending there is nothing left to discuss.

“Gumnaam” & “Jewel Thief” were both fantastic… Loved “Baazigar” & “Gupt” too!! Though my personal favorites are “Kaun!” & “A Wednesday”….. Heard a lot about “Amir” but yet to see that one…..
But I doubt if any of them are original bollywood ideas…….
How i wish Satyajit Ray’s pitch perfect thrillers “Sonar Kella” and “The Elephant God” were dubbed in hindi for pan Indian viewers!

..And no, nothing in the lines of Matrix or Inception from Bollywood yet!!

  10. Manish

forgot to add gupt to my list that was awesome as well

    Absolutely Bang on Target.
That’s Why ‘Inception’ and ‘The Matrix’ are Masterpiece.
Coz People keep discussing the concept of these Two Movies, Even after coming out of Theater and again Rewatch to Learn Something New and Intersting .
I personally believe that Every Time one watches these two Movies, he will go through something new philosophical kind of Experience.
Such is the Power of these two Movies.

  12. cticize

Yep thanks for the update comments, thats what i wanted to know, whether or not there are movies like the Matrix or Inception that allows us to think.

  13. Manish

Sorry to go off topic again

I spoke to shirish Kunder abt his soon to be announced joker and his plans for alien so he tweeted this

ShirishKunder @manish0805 Alien Sahib is shelved. Am only making JOKER now.

Since Akki was saying he will be working on a big project next year Joker cd be the one .

  14. pranay

Gumnaam was based on the agatha christie’s masterpiece novel And then there were none.

someone mentioned Kaun here.. how can i forget it? i thought it was wonderful but underrated
    also, ek hasina thi..

  15. sputnik

I felt Kaun was somewhat similar/inspired from the songless movie Ittefaq directed by Yash Chopra (won Filmfare for Best Director) starring Rajesh Khanna and Nanda. Even the camera work seems similar (the constant movement and spinning).

Ittefaq itself was inspired/copied from Signpost to Murder.

  16. film_maker

“Aar Ya Paar” – by Ketan Mehta. Jackie Shroff was in it.

Was sad to hear it was a frame by frame copy of a Western movie which in itself was based on a book…

    Regardless, a well made flick.

  17. sputnik

    rohit,

I saw Aar Ya Paar back when it released and thought it was very good. Jackie was brilliant in a negative role. Paresh Rawal was very good and Deepa Saahi was good too. MTV VJ Kamal Siddu was horrible though.

I read that it is a copied from James Hadley Chase’s novel The Sucker Punch.

Its a bit surprising that they did not credit James Hadley Chase coz they did credit Madame Bovary for Maya Memsaab.

  18. Tango

Sputnik – I read that it is a copied from James Hadley Chase’s novel The Sucker Punch.

Yup i have read the novel and alse seen Aar Ya Paar, it is totaly based on The Sucker Punch.

  19. rajesh

One interesting suspense movie missing from the discussion is Dhundh starring Sanjay Khan, Naveen Nishchal, Jeenat Aman and Danny.
I watched this movie long back on DD and quite liked it.
And, titls song of this film sung by Mahendra Kapoor is one of my favourite.

  20. beckett

Gumnaan-Based upon And then there were none. If one watches it wthout reading the book, the film a’int that bad.

Dhundh- Based upon The Murder of Roger Ackroyd. The film was beautifully shot and can be termed a ood thriller

Bees Saal Baad- Based upon The Hound of Baskervilles. I enjoyed watching the movie. Again what sort of was a dampener was having read the book earlier before watching the movie

Chocholate- Bad copy of Usual Suspects

Khiladi,Gupt,Khakee were good. And so were Woh Kaun thi and Mera Saya..

  21. RAJ

Mera saya and Woh kaun thi were very good…Dhund was very good too…Khikadi is another one…

But I haven’t yet come across a complete suspense thriller which would excite me…I can watch Vyomkesh Vakshi any day compared to BW suspense thrillers…

  22. beckett

Vyomkesh Bakhshi was a great series though inspired from Holmes-Watson which was anyway inspired from Poe’s Dupin. Tough one can say that Vyomkesh was a lot more polite and humble than Holmes.
Karamchand was another great series and the protagonist’s character had a few shades of Christie’s Poirot and John Dickson Carr’s Henry Merrivale and Gideon Fell
Kiley ka Rehesya was another thriller which was one of it’s kind. Would love to watch it again..

  23. cticize

Great to read about Byomkesh Bakshi…i would definitely like to see a big screen version of it.

  24. beckett

Yes,won’t it be great to see a full-fledged movie on this series? Maybe have Rajat Kapoor as Vyomkesh and Vinay Pathak as his side-kick..

  25. Gorilla

I think some of the back and white films of Dev anand like CID aswell as other B&W movies made on court scenes were thrilling and very intelligently made.
I have bought full series of Byomkesh Bakshi after being its fan when i was a kid. However i felt it lack the same punch now. Ditto with Tehkikaat, my other favourite once upon a time.

IMO, the best TV series on suspense and thrill was Shekhar Suman’s Reporter. That was an awesome series of arounf 35-40 episodes till Shekhar Suman become editor.
In movies of recent times, i think Khiladi leads over most others followed by 100 days and Gupt. I am eagerly waiting for Saif’s Agent Vinod.

  26. beckett

I think there was one movie Kanoon where the denouement at the end was shocking. Not sure if the name of the movie is Kanoon. It had Rajender Kumar and Ashok Kumar in lead roles

  27. ritz

Beckett, I loved Kanoon. Yes it had Ahok Kumar and Rajender – it is 1960 movie.

  28. count_me

Today one of my friend was highly recommending “Manorama six feet under”…. hv any of u seen it? How good is it?

  29. suprabh

first of all, I don’t think…any hindi movie has ever come close to the shock value or the suspense part as compared to memento, inception, matrix or fight club etc..

some of the good hindi movies that I can think of as good suspense films would be

    -Khamosh (vidhu vinod chopra)

    – Khoj (starred rishi kapoor, kimi katekar and naseeruddin shah)

    – Kaun (manoj bajpai, urmila)

-manorama six feet under (abhay deol)

also there was this movie called “Yakeen” starring arjun rampal and priyanka chopra…I liked it a lot..is possile that it might e a copy of some hollywood flick.

  30. S T R E E T

watched Inception last nite.. nothing extra-ordinary. if anything, the movie kinda dragged on for too long.. and became more and more predictable.. specially the climax. Would take Don’s twist in the end over it anyday.

  31. beckett

@ Ritz- Thanks for clearing the doubt about the movie name. Was not sure as had watched it a long time back

I enjoyed watching “The Others”. The twist at the end gave me a real jolt.Never saw it coming. There was a Hindi film based on the same story with Amitabh. It was a disaster at the BO.

There was one Hindi whodunit set in a forest. It was the story of a film crew. Amidst the shooting, the murder happens.Don’t remember the name.I believe Shabana Azmi stared in it.It was a very Agatha Christie like setting.Would love to watch it again on DVD if somehow get to know the name

  32. ritz

I think you are referring to VVC film Khamosh?

  33. beckett

Thanks again. You are right on the button. It is Khamosh.Googled n confirmed just now. Will try to watch it this WE

  34. lalsub

Loved VVC’s Khamosh when I watched it on tv a few years back. Good suspense.

Among Hollywood thrillers I love Phone Booth. Watched it a couple of months back on Star Movies. Didn’t leave my couch even for a few seconds–absolutely rivetting. Must watch it again if it is shown and I catch it. Wonder how a Hindi version of this film would pan out.

  35. beckett

I enjoyed Identity too, starring John Cusack. There was a rip off of it in BW Khamosh- Khauff ki raat.It starred Shilpa Shetty n Juhi Chawla

  36. ritz

I liked Identity very much. BW remake was pathetic ..cud not watch it for more than 30 mins.
