Anyone has info about the international distributors of Kites, we are frighteningly close to the release of the movie(per International standards) and still no press promotion etc?

I mean its supposed to release in 60 countries simultaneously when i last heard about it.

Ahh, This is great indeed. Despite some good promos, don’t know why movie failed to create curiosity inside me. I always felt something missing about kites (or you can say something not so exciting). I hope so that after release my myth will turn out to be false. I want it huge at box-office.

Lets hope the fans with their personal attacks sticks around here when the english version of Roshan’s cheesiness is released for the western audience.

Or say when its shown to the western critics as ‘the bollywood cross-over’ film.

    Till then.

I actually think the movie released its first trailor too early…. and there’s this feeling of staleness already about this film. If they has just released few song promos here and there… and one action-dialogue drama just a week prior to release would have been way better. They happened to the exact opposite. The Chopras are usually very godo at that type of stuff. Fanaa, RNBDJ, Dhoom2 all had similar strategy as far as putting out trailors are concerned. First there’d be a teasor just introducing the stars.. as well as the melodious “tune” of their main songs . Then they’ll introduce the songs, one by one (so they could sell CD’s) and then as the release date comes closer they’d show us the a full 2-3 min trailor carving out the main plot, lots of dialogue and action (if there be any) .. all while playing the tunes of the most “popular” songs on an orchestra in the background.

If your very first trailors reveal everything about the movie… and then you release the movie 3 months later.. the curiousity and excitement factor is obviously all gone.

… unless you have something really novel to offer and is not leaked out to the public.

Your reasoning is flawed big time.Big movies ,on the contrary, must release their promos early enough because more than fans,haters/freaks eagerly anticipate the trailer to lambast it at once and spread negativity(for whatever sadistic pleasure!).Releasing it early has the advantage that the dust of negativity settles down and the actual merit of the promo begins to show. This is exactly what happened with Kites.Same goes for 3I.People hated the first promo of both but both made impact in their later promos.

YRF are the biggest laggards in publicising a movie.Just look how CDI and Rocket Singh were promoted.D2 was equally bad in its promotion startegy. The reason it got such an opening is the hype associated because of the Dhoom series ,the stellar star-cast.(This might sound exagerated but)Even if no promos were released, the opening would ,virtually, have been the same!

“…because more than fans,haters/freaks eagerly anticipate the trailer to lambast it at once …”

Hahaha… the average cinegoer doesn’t discuss a film with “fans” and “haters” before deciding whether to watch it or not.

Secondly.. when you have stars like SrK, Hrithik, Aamir.. audience is already interested in watching the film. All you gotta do is make sure you dont fuk up.. dont do something to push the audience away… “staleness” does just dat.

And dunno bout Rocket Singh coz I havent seen dat movie. But CDI’s opening had everything to do wit the genre and subject of the film than the promotion strategy.

And you really think D2’s promotioon strategy was bad? Last I checked it had a record breaking opening.. and perhaps better than anything until Ghajini, which also had the exact sequence of trailors as I mentioned earlier. First there was just a teasor show Aamir and his body. Then came teh song trailors one by one.. and a couple weeks prior to release there was this long trailor with dialogues and action.

Ofcoure I am just talking of the sequence of trailors. A promotion campaign of a film constitues a lot more than just that.

First of all, MNIK was way way bigger a movie than CDI was.. and it had other things going for it. There’s the SrK-Kajol jodi. The songs were superhit. First SrK movie in over 2 years.. I mean it wasn’t a k3G deal.. but definitely had a lot more pull factors than CDI, which basically started with Srk and and ended with him… not to mention .. him in one of his most unconventional roles.

Street – i think u are right in your point of Roshans fucking up the promotions of Kites … once the footage from Cannes got leaked one year back, the main action scenes and some romantic scenes were out … the recent trailers are repackaging of those same secenes and they look very stale … even for those to whom the leaked promo did not reach, all these recent 4-5 teasers are like repetition as they show the same scenes over and over again with a different song in the background. Not to mention those who have seen MNIK in theaters have already seen these scenes with the theatrical trailer.

Roshans have gone for an overkill with these few scenes in a very short time – there is already a seen-that-before feel with the movie – which is not good.

Anyways, Reliance seems to be just desperate to grab eyeballs for a mammoth opening for fast recovery (which is natural considering the kinda money involved).

But what i feel is the main problem with this movie is – the teasers reveal a kinda cheesiness of bollywood elements all over the place – something that will never cross-over to western sensibilities … the movie is already billed as a crossover material – the chances are really slim … more the cheesiness (read singing in a car, all the constant cheesy smiling and laughing, dancing in the rain, making buns dance, overacting while hugging etc etc) … these elements shud work with the indian audience, but cross over? they have spent a lot on making it visually rich, only if the emoting was more of a ‘global’ kind rather than bollywood cheese.

This movie shud work to some level in India, might even become the 3rd movie to cross 100 cr – but not sure if that can justify its price (MNIK kind of scnario is likely) … dont see this be the next 3I in indian BO, but going by the poor BO show of bollywood for sometime now, Kites may stand tall amidst ruins in the eyes of hrithik fans.

Kyoon dono HR fans aapus mein lad rahe ho bhai? Manoj, let me vouch that before I ever saw u on NG, Ach has been the defacto HR rep on this site. He is a real well-wisher of HR, and I can feel his frustration at seeing Kites unfold.

But let me tell you, India mein yeh film zaroor chalegi. Ab 100cr kare ya 200cr, woh to naseeb janta hai. Lekin desi audiences ke liye itna sab thik hai, after all, Bwood ke Shehzaade do saal ke baad tashreef le aa rahe hain.

But I agree with Ach, the more I watch these promos, the littler I feel are the chances to click with the gora audiences. The latest romances are either the Twilight types, or the mature ‘The Proposal’ types. The last time I saw any Mexican heroine steal the show was with Salma Hayek in Desparado, back in 1995! Uske baad, kuch bhi nahi hua. Barbara doesnt have the sex appeal of Salma Hayek for sure. But again, if the movie does even $10M in the US, it wudve recovered all its costs and probably will become a hit. So the bar is pretty low. Even Desperado had done quite a bit back then. This may yet work with Mexican audiences, if it is dubbed in Spanish! Unki-hamari sensibilities ek jaise hi hain. I already showed the trailers and made a song CD for my mexican landscappers. They thoroughly enjoyed it, and did recognize Mori! But, I dont think they are the types to go spend 10 bucks on a movie. So, lets see, kya hota hai.

Ach is just coming from the ROI angle yaar. The Roshans have tried to do something very ambitious, and I do wish them the best.

But again, as I said earlier, the bar is pretty low. Cheesefests (here I refer to hwood sensibilities) can easily make $10M in the US, if they find the right audience. They just need to promote it to those intended audiences, hopefully, Ratner will help them in that angle.

NyKavi – still expecting 10M from the english version? I wud say both the versions together may notch up 10M in US at max … but even for that they need to excite the hispanic audience enuf.

the hindi version shud do 3-4 M itself … another 5 M from the english version will hardly be global crossover – much like MNIK … KJO is simply foolish to think his movie has crossed over because it did additional 1M in Indonesia or Bahrain … such petty business hardly justifies the ‘global’ ambitions … and these ambitions get unfold in places like Cannes … and such global movies getting sold at exorbitant prices is another irony.
