Shiv Sena attacks cinemas due to screen ‘My Name Is Khan’

Mumbai, Feb 9 (IANS) Shiv Sena activists Tuesday attacked several places that will screen Shah Rukh Khan’s “My Name Is Khan”, barely an hour after Mumbai Police assured full security at the 63 cinemas and multiplexes that will showcase the movie.

Sena mobs attacked and damaged the booking windows of the Mehul Theatre in Mulund and staged noisy protests outside Shreyas Theatre in Ghatkopar, both in the suburbs, officials said.

Groups of Sena activists were also seen protesting and shouting slogans in Kanjurmarg, Bandra, Khar and other parts of the city even as police promised tough measures to prevent any untoward incident during the release of the film directed by Karan Johan and also starring Kajol.

While 12 Sena activists were nabbed from Mulund, 24 were detained in Ghatkopar and Kanjurmarg in connection with the protests.

Earlier in the afternoon, director Karan Johar had called on Police Commissioner D. Shivanandhan and returned satisfied by the police security promised for the movie.

Joint Police Commissioner (Law and Order) Himanshu Roy said anybody attempting to disrupt the film in any manner would be dealt with “very firmly”.

“We shall also frisk and search suspicious persons coming to view the movie to prevent any untoward incidents inside the cinema auditorium,” Roy told a packed news conference.

The Sena violence came a few days after the party had unofficially dissociated itself from banning the movie release in the city.

However, on Tuesday, senior party leader and former Lok Sabha speaker Manohar Joshi reiterated in Nagpur that Shah Rukh must apologise for his remarks advocating the cause of Pakistani cricketers participating in the Indian Premier League.

His much awaited film is slated for a global release this Friday, including 63 cinemas and multiplexes in Mumbai and another 250 across the state.

Why is this raising its ugly head again? I thought the SS issue was dead and buried.

Chavan dares VHP, will watch SRK’s ‘My Name…’ with family

New Delhi, Feb 8 (IANS) Stating that nobody would be allowed to disrupt the release of superstar Shah Rukh Khan’s “My Name Is Khan”, Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan Monday dared the Vishwa Hindu Parishad to stop its screening, saying he will watch the movie with his family.

“Nobody can take the law into their hands. We will take action if somebody is issuing such threats. The law will take its course, let them say whatever they want,” Chavan told reporters here.

“I will also go to see the movie along with my family members,” he said.

The VHP’s threat came a day after Bal Thackeray’s Shiv Sena decided not to oppose the release of “My Name Is Khan”.

“People of India must boycott ‘My Name Is Khan’ as Shah Rukh Khan is a traitor. He is a Pakistani agent,” VHP leader Pravin Togadia said.

He threatened that posters of the film would be torn down.

“My Name Is Khan”, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, is set for release Friday.

I guess after the Rahul Gandhi visit, where Sena could not do anything, they have to somehow show to people that they still can indulge in hooliganism.

These hindu fanatics must be stopped or we are going back to the Dark Ages! Why is the government even allowing such hooligans to have their way and get away with it? It is hightime we stand up for reason. This Shive Sena whosoever he is must be arrested and placed behind bars until he changes his attitude. If Sanju can be tried and convicted with detention why not this roughneck?

The advance booking has stopped in Pune. And in Mumbai too, except two-three theatres. I really hope this nonsense ends and people can watch the film peacefully. SS is just using SRK and his film as an excuse to get back at the Congress for “aiding” Raj Thackeray.

My take is that if the film is exceptional, the multiplexes might even think of putting up a fight against the SS and use a lot of pressure. Think 3 Idiots. If this film would have faced such a ban, you’d have crowds really getting agitated. On the other hand, if the film is not great, then perhaps multiplexes will not feel an acute need to risk their property for it.
