Audiance is the King and Boxoffice the Prophet, what they say needs to be and will be accepted – Success or otherwise.

The countdown has begun. There are just four days left for the release of Bollywood’s most-hyped flick, filmmaker Karan Johar’s My Name Is Khan, and the uproar is deafening.

The factions trying to put a spoke in the wheel of MNIK will be clearly outnumbered by a community called SRK junkies who are parched for a full-fledged Shah Rukh Khan flick. MNIK, coming as it is after SRK’s Om Shanti Om (2007) — if you don’t count Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008) and Billu (2009) — is being touted by trade experts as a blockbuster even before it opens.

Says Komal Nahata, “From what I know about this film, its script is bound to resonate with a global audience. Without giving away anything from the story, I can tell you that it is the first time that mainstream cinema has addressed the Hindu-Muslim issue in such a sensitive way. And yet, the film has entertainment at its core. It is a fabulous script… and I just get the feeling that the recent controversies that have surrounded it will help rather than hamper its box-office appeal.”

Vikas Mohan says, “How big a hit MNIK will be, can only be talked about after one has seen the film. But, with my eyes closed, I can say it will get a historic opening especially with a multiplex audience. The Karan-SRK-Kajol combination is lethal and it has so far worked.” Vikas also feels that the recent political controversy has raised the film’s prospects at the ticket windows.

Taran Adarsh says, “In my opinion MNIK will be to 2010 what 3 Idiots was to 2009. It will infuse oxygen into Bollywood’s veins. The craze for the film worldwide is far beyond what we can imagine. Shah Rukh and Kajol are a screen pair that is adored by millions. When they combine with Karan, it becomes an invaluable combination.” According to Taran, what is also going to work for the film is the fact that Red Chillies and Dharma Productions have tied up with Fox Star (India) who will release the film in two phases. The first phase will come on February 12, 2010 in the countries where mainstream Bollywood cinema has a definite market and then there will be a deferred release leading up to almost June 2010, where newer markets for Bollywood are being tapped. “It is a brilliant release strategy,” says Taran.
Theatre owners across the globe are absolutely in sync with the trade pundits and Bollywood insiders say that the excitement leading up to the movie is a ‘never-before-phenomena’.

Billu is fine, but seems like Media is still in hangover of calling Rab ne a underperformer, what a shame!

Doga – Looks like SRK bought off all the trade guys !!!

BTW- One of these days, if ever I meet Prof. CHSO4 and his IBOF soulmate (the propogater(s) of the bagful of money theory)I’ll ask them :-

Tweedle dee and tweedle dumb; why does SRK do it selectively :?: I mean he did not ‘buy’ them for his own productions like SWADES and PAHELI !!!!

Very true. Audience has the final call.

For Komal’s analysis and predictions become utmost importance now.

Very difficult to predict what MNIK’s fate will be. Based on the promos, the seriousness of the subject and Karan’s reputation with the kind of films he makes, it’s hard to be completely bullish on the film. In fact, it is clearly a big risk.
But yes, if he’s pulled it off, then that will be great and a major step ahead for him as a filmmaker.

The above is about the content. At the BO, it will open spectacularly well – and this will be courtesy SRK”s very very strong fan base.

Well, going statistically Taran has 50-50 chance of being right. He gave 4 stars to both Kurbaan and 3 Idiots. One was a blockbuster, the other tanked.

Taran should never be taken seriously – that is my view. Not for any film. IMO, critics should never double up as trade guides and journos. They should be dedicated to one thing. Otherwise, there is no way you can be objective. I believe internationally, critics are only critics. They don’t get invited for premiers etc. Press shows are organised for them, but they never hobnob with stars.

As a SrK fan, I’m not sure if I want this movie to be a big hit or not. If it underperforms, SrK will lose his no.1 position to Aamir (mind you… upto Rab ne.. he matched and even better everything Aamir/Hrithik/akshay offered). On the other hand, if it becomes a big hit, say it matches a Ghajini, then we are stuck with SrK-Kjo combo for another decade. Not that I don’t enjoy their movies (I love KKHH… and thoroughly enjoyed KHNH and K3G).. but I’d prefer SrK to move on. Even though he does tonnes of different movies.. but just coz he has a Kjo/Chopra flick once every 2/3 years, he’s not given his due. Look at the variety of his non-Kjo movies this decade – Josh, PBDHH, Swades, Devdas, Hey Raam, MHN, Asoka, Don, Paheli, OSO ..and even his Chopra movies have him pay some very different characters.. a Raj Aryan vs Suri vs Kabir Khan.

Ofcourse the best case scenario would be that the film is actually very different from their usual stuff, plus it becomes a bumper hit and gets hoardes of critical acclaim. I doubt it though.

I can understand from where Street is coming from…Even as a srk fan i dont want him to do wmovie with Yashraj,Kjo and Farah kahn for atleast next 5 years….

Infact once MNIK passes through i will be more excited about DON-2

Honestly, I’m glad SRK got rid of Farah. She might give Akki a big hit with Tees Maar Khan, but what does such a success achieve for SRK? It will be in the same vein as MHN and OSO.

Again, with Karan, I think it is time to move on. For the longest time, SRK only had three names on his date diary – Yash Raj, Karan and Farah. A good actor with so much charisma and strong fan base like him should not have restricted himself to doing films with only these guys.

Better late than never. Yes, I hope SRK gives Karan a good rest after MNIK. But as Street says, if the film is a big hit, there will be temptation.

    Sandy,

Yes thats the issue where Aamir has succeeded..he has never given in to the tempations…he has moved on after the movie is finished…Thats a good quality to have…With SRK although he has done different movies with a number of different directors still that fixation with some directors remain…I believe at this point in career ,with nothing to loose and everything to gain SRK should try for different subjects with different talented directors…

Yes. I was not particularly impressed with SRK’s Don. But I am more interested in trying our Don II and Ra-1 than MNIK any day. The problem with SRK is that he has tried No KJo and Aditya configurations, but mostly, except for Farah, they have not worked: PBDHH ( with Aziz, though Chalte Chalte was an okay hit),Badshah ( with Abbas-Mustan), Duplicate, Chaahat ( with Mahesh Bhatt), ASoka( Santosh Sivan), Paheli ( Amol Plaekar), Mnai Ratnam ( Dil Se), Priyadarshan ( Biloo Barber).Even with Gowarikar he could not combine critical appreciation with box office success. If you see his real big successes they are heavily weighed by Johar-Cohpra-Farah dispensation. He needs to break out of that to realise his full potential.

Yes, Sandy, the SRK interview with Barkha was top-notch. That’s a class act. Amir is opening up a little more these days and is quite confident and spontaneous. But no one can touch SRK in interviews. This one was special. He was intelligent, warm, vulnerable, sincere, confident ..all rolled into one. What a pity no one gives him a complex enough role where he can bring out all these aspects into play!

I have a theory. If MNIK underperforms by any chance, then I feel SRK should ditch R1 and get going with Don 2. I’m not a fan at all of Farhan’s Don, but I think with a better script, it can be ace! Importantly, SRK looks good in that role. If Don2 is not possible, then maybe a quickie with Vishal Bharadwaj would be great.

Yers, Sandy, I agree that Don was ordinary. But SRK loked great in that role. An intelligent action hero, would be something to lok forward to ( as opposed to dumb or Tomfoolish action-heroes like Akshay, Sanju or Salman. I mean that is why Ghajini scored. But SRK can be more swashbuckling that Amir, more mean and sexy). RA 1 would have been a good idea to, but I seriously doubt Anubhav Sinha’s capability to deliver a scifi fare.A crime-thriller with tech-savvy Tamil director like Gautam Menon would be my wish list for SRK. A VB film would be nice to.

Don’t think so. Aamir also repeatd successful directors/producers until the films bit the dust. He did 2 hits with Indra Kumar Dil and Ishq but when Mann flopped he moved on. HE had the monster hit Raja Hindustani with Darshan but then one of his worst flops followed with the same guy Mela so he had to move on. And then there’s directors like Mansoor Khan, where he made 3 films QSQT, Dil and AHAT.. but had a fallout due to Josh casting.
