Lagaan has always been one of my favorite movies. But I had only seen this movie twice and the last time I had seen it was in 2002.. Also, didnt catch this movie on TV as it is hardly shown on cable due to its length..
So, I was bored and decided to watch Lagaan, RDB, DCH and TZP once again.. And among the rewatches, Lagaan just blew me away! I mean, I knew it was a great movie but after seeing it again.. Its like a timeless masterpiece! I mean what amazing direction, story, acting, cinematography, songs.. And the Background score is EPIC! I think Lagaan has to be Rahman’s one of the best albums. And I thought Akash’s role in DCH was Aamir’s best this decade.. But how wrong was I. He was so natural as Bhuvan.. Really great performance. After seeing his performances in the likes of DCH, RDB and Lagaan once again, I can now see why people werent impressed with his performances in Fanaa, TZP and Ghajini.
Everything about Lagaan is perfect. The Britishers arent shown in an Over the top manner. The villagers were perfect.. The Sets were brilliant. Also, I am not into art and all but this movie was like some kind of a beautiful poem.. With Relavant songs and all..
I am kinda surprised why some people dont think Lagaan as Ashutosh’s best work.. I mean Swades was good but Lagaan is simply awesome and it is the only Ashu movie this decade which doesnt seem dragging (Yes Swades was dragging). The whole cricket match was put up in a very amazing way. So damn interesting and thrilling. Even though the outcome was predictable, it was still nail bitting experience while watching the last 20 minutes.
For a movie, which is over 3 hours and 40 minutes, it just doesnt drag at all in between. The songs were soothing and great.. Usually, on rewatches I kinda fast forward songs But for this movie, I actually watched all songs as there was something real nice about them. The Narration was SOLID. The Screenplay has to be one of the best in Bollywood as its no joke to keep people hooked on for 3 hours and 40 mins at a stretch. And the supporting cast was EXCELLENT. I cant think of one person who didnt perform well. From The person playing Captain Russell to the guy who played the role of Kajra.. Everyone were excellent.
I just cant think of any weakness of the movie.. People might complain about length but hell no! At the end of the movie, I wanted more!
This is definately the best movie of this decade. Sad that it didnt win the Oscar but nonetheless, it got nominated and also was considered the second best movie after No Man’s Island.
Its really rare that a movie starring a Big star is a flawless masterpiece. I think Lagaan is Aamir’s best movie. My respect for Aamir the Producer has grown more.. To think about it, TZP and Lagaan are his productions films.. I just cant wait for Dhobi Ghat and Peepli Live.
A def 10/10. Classic movie. A true Masterpiece.
