2 minors, medical student commit suicide in Mumbai

http://ibnlive.in.com/news/2-minors-medical-student-commit-suicide-in-mumbai/108169-3.html?from=tn

Two minors and a medical student are suspected to have committed suicide here, sending shock waves across the city Monday.

A 20-year-old medical student, whose identity was not immediately known, was found dead in her flat at Chaitanya Nagar in the upmarket Powai area of north-west Mumbai, police said, adding that prelimanary investigations suggest it could be a suicide even though no note was found at the spot.

The girl, a first year medical student of DY Patil College in Navi Mumbai, had reportedly failed in two subjects in her recent term examinations, police added.

The body was discovered by her parents. No suicide note was recovered from the site, police said.

In another incident, the body of 13-year-old Sushant Eknath Patil, a student of class VII at the prestigious Shardashram Boys High School in Dadar West, was found hanging in the school toilet.

In this case too, police suspect suicide as Sushant had failed in some subjects in his mid-term exams.

“Yes, the incident has happened in the boys’ secondary section of the school,” an official of the school said.

Soon after, there were reports that 11-year-old Neha Sawant allegedly committed suicide at her home in Dombivli after her parents refused to allow her to participate in a television dance reality show.

The sad footnote to this incident is that there are reports that all three of them had incidentally seen 3 Idiots earlier in the week. I was coming through Dadar when I witnessed angry parents stopping the screening of 3 Idiots at Paradise Cinema and tearing its posters.

Now while it is unfair to blame a film for any such incidents that come out of people interpreting it wrongly and replicating its actions in real life, these three cases and that of the ragging in KEM Medical College where 18 juniors were ragged in the same way as 3 Idiots, i.e. making them undress to their underpants and stamping their asses, make one wonder if youngsters are taking home the wrong message from the film or is the film unemphatic in getting its point across.

One of my grouses against the film was that it didn’t take as strong a stand against ragging as it should have, instead choosing to look at it in a funny vein. The system was the villain here, but isn’t the society that ‘rewards’ and ‘perpetuates’ the very system the main villain? The fact is that the Chaturs of this world do get better jobs more often than the likelihood of a Farhan Quereshi finding a photographer willing to mentor him in the Amazonian rainforest!

But more importantly, and dangerously, 3 Idiots leads you to believe with certainty that the “education system sucks, and we do not need to be a part of any race”. It is taking it to the other extreme, where a student isn’t so much being prepared to excel but to pride his mediocrity! I remember somebody had said that how post-TZP (a film that I love save its ending which goes against what the film has been trying to say all along), most kids who were clever enough wouldn’t study and give excuses of being dyslexic! It was harsh, but one wonders if such convenient placebos will create stronger hearts or will give those weaker ones amongst us a vindication to decide to “quit”…because the system sucks!!!

Sagarika Ghose’s review of 3 Idiots, while I don’t agree with for she has chosen to look at the film from only one point of view, is an interesting read, nevertheless.

“education system sucks, and we do not need to be a part of any race”.I agree with this.People should decide what is good for them.

Its a very, very sad thing but I wouldnt be blaming 3 Idiots by any chance whatsoever (I know no one here is blaming, I am talking about the parents stopping the screening). When a 6 year old child tried to jump of roof because he though Shaktiman would save him, would it be wise to blame the show?

Till now, I have seen people talk about 3 things (messages ) in the movie :-

1.) “You shouldnt just “batify’ (memorize) theory and pass xams but try to gain knowledge (A thing which my dad has been trying to make me understand since I got into engineering.)

2.) Parents should put pressure on Kids from an early age to do what they want them to do.. Like my dad gave me this lecture when I was in 6th class that I had to do IIT and be a great engineer. But atleast my dad didnt put me in IIT institution.. Many of my cousins were taking IIT coaching classes in 7th Class.. And only one is doing Chemical engineering in IIT Bombay. Rest are in their local colleges.

3.) Enjoy engineering. Dont get scared. Open ur mind and heart to learning.

This movie has inspired me in one thing. My dad would always tell me 10 days before exam to start studying, and My usual reply would be “Dad, If I study now, I will forget before the xams. I like studying two days before xam. And u knw na I will pass the xams”. And my Dad would reply “Dont just study, try to gain knowledge. Otherwise u wont be good at what you are doing”.. But I would listen from one ear and forget it the next minute. This movie actually made me feel guilty and bad. And I went to my Dad and assured him that I would put my heart and try to learn. Well, I was nicely studying when this Telangana issue got my exams postponed :D. Luckily I am in third year, and not fourth.. Otherwise, my “MS US” plans would have gotten popat.

Abzee I finally saw 3 Idiots and it was very identifiable for me as a Mechanical Engineering student. It was high on entertainment value.

Unfortunately, the media has been very soft on some of the toilet jokes. I mean the scene where ppl get eloctrocuted at vulnerable spots plus how can one ignore a scene where you piss on your teachers nameplate (even if you hate them). Also the vacum cleaner child birth scene was not only laughable but a bit too detailed for my liking.

I just wonder if the film had starred an Akshay, Salman or Abhishek, what would the reactions had been, especially from those who are calling it a classic. I have no objections to the ragging scenes, as such things happen.

I ask those ppl who shattered the sky when Akshay said “Women are good for only one thing (In KI)” what they think of “Kuch din baad sirf ladkiyon ki photo hogi, aur bola ga isko dilwa de.”

  5. Ihab

Tango, Let me correct the sentence here. It is

“Kuch Dino Bad, “nangi” ladkiyon ki tasveere lagoage, aur Phir Kaho ge Oh god! Bas ek bar Dila de”. This was said by Milimeter to Farhan referring to Raju :D (Seen the movie thrice, Should know each dialogue properly by now :D )

I dont think there is anything offensive in that.

Also, Tango, Media is not the only sector which has gone soft on the toilet jokes. What about those dozens of reviews? What about those Millions of Comments by Tweeters? Seriously, I have read many reviews and only 1-2 said that they felt the toilet scenes were a tad too much. And people arent even mentioning it. In the case of KI, it was something else.

Sometimes, when you like a movie just too much, people tend to forgive the flawed part. If any other movie had a scene like “Aal izz well Aaz izz well” resulting in a baby suddenly kciking and crying, then they would have found it ridiculous and talked about for days. But people enjoyed the scene and having no probs in forgetting the scene. I told couple of friends that I found the delivery scene a little too much and they were like “Chalta, it was good only. Cheap ya Vulgar to nahi bateye woh log”. Remember the delivery scene in Salaam Namastey? For some reason, people found it in bad taste. Dont know why.

Sometimes Tango, Aam Junta are ready to forgive flaws if they enjoyed the movie too much. Majority of the people dont come to theatres to enjoy a flawless piece of Cinema. They want a good story and good entertainment. Yes, sometimes Rubbish too work but the way 3 Idiots is working at BO, proves that people long for Good stories. I have heard so many say “Finally. After a long time, I got to see a great movie in theatre”. Happens.

  6. Tango

ihab I have publically said that I dont mind such adult jokes or look for sense in a commercial movie. But if you are putting down such jokes in one fuilm you have to do so in another one too!

I said it during TZP and Welcome that I laughed in Welcome and cried in TZP because I knew what kind of movie I was going to see.

But just cross your heart and be honest and tell me if Akshay was involved in that electrocution scene or vacum pump delivery scene what would the critics have said?

Once again its not for or against an Amir or Akshay, but against media double standards.

And 3 Idiots is very entertaining as compared to that crap Kambakkhth Ishq, but if one ripped Akshay for saying “Women are good only

“Sometimes Tango, Aam Junta are ready to forgive flaws if they enjoyed the movie too much. Majority of the people dont come to theatres to enjoy a flawless piece of Cinema. They want a good story and good entertainment. for one thing” then do the same here.”

I have always said that. That is the resaon why movies like KI and Blue open good (obviously not on the level of a Ghajini or 3 I).

  7. Tango

But if one ripped Akshay for saying “Women are good for one thing only” then do the same here.

Point out bad jokes, instead of calling it a classic. And yes go ahead and praise the innumerable merits of 3I.

  8. rks

Naya saal hai nayi baatein…Jo hona tha woh ho gaya…Happy New Year to you all.

ps: Still waiting for 3 Idiots prices to fall to Youtube level to watch it ;)

  9. Tango

Nahi RKS yeh double standard hai ki nahi?

If you remember I had defended 3 I hostel bathroom scenes much before 3 I released, because aisa hota hai all male Engineering colleges mein. But jidhar locha hai usko bhi point out karo.

  10. Ihab

It is the way you direct a scene Tango. Here, Hirani must be applauded for not making the toilet scenes look disgusting or vulgar. There is a difference between Akki toilet scenes and 3 Idiots toilet scenes.

1.) In CC2C, after Mithunda is killed by the VIllian, the villaint pees on Akki. a TOTALLY unnecessary scene.

2.) In SIK, Akki by mistake pees on one of the fellows.

3.) Heyy Babby and KI just had lots of derogatory and vulgar one liners about Women.

You just cant compare. Also, its a very well known fact that Indian Audience liek to create an Image of a person in their mind and continue like that. Like for eg, Had Aamir starred in Tasveer, it would have been known as a Classic Thriller and brilliantly acted. Thats his image. Had SRK starred in Ghajini and acted better than Aamir, people would say SRK overacted just too much, when Aamir basically overacted too. Its the image Tango. Double standards or not.. That I dnt knw.

Yup I tend to agree with you.

    Very honestly put.

  12. Doga

Tango Bhai,i said it before too ,3 Idiots has 4 times the pissing scenes of a regular Akki movie, ;)

  13. Shahid

“3 Idiots has 4 times the pissing scenes of a regular Akki movie”

    Lol Doga…. Agree!

  14. S T R E E T

Yea, watching the movie with the family had me uncomfortable in a number of scenes. And that babay delivery scene was laughable indeed. Also, the “all is well” mantra was one of the cheeseiest things I seen this year in any film. Though overall I enjoyed the movie quite a bit, wouldn’t call it a classic by any means. Plus, having watched the two Munnabhais, the movie was more predictable on most cases than not.Different story and what not, the treatment was very similar to the other two Hirani movies. Sometimes, it’s nice to have be able to creat an identifying signature for your movies, but Hirani’s getting repetitive for me from the 3rd film itself. As a director I’d have him along Farah Khan, Farhan Akhtar, Bhansali, Sriram Raghavan etc or one-pony horses, he’s simply not in the same league as Vishal Bhardwaaj and Gowariker.

Having said, if makes another six movies in the same style,I’ll still be watching every one of them.

  15. Tango

SP- “Having said, if makes another six movies in the same style,I’ll still be watching every one of them.”

Same here becoz unlike Chatur Singh, who likes to watch films of ‘prestige’ I enjoy all kind of cinema.

  16. Tango

Doga – “Tango Bhai,i said it before too ,3 Idiots has 4 times the pissing scenes of a regular Akki movie,”

Doga I am happy that Amir fans are understanding my point, that it has nothing to do with trying to put down Amir.

I’m sure if Chatur Singh was here, he would have mailed many of them with “Look I told you Tango is on SRK paylist and Amir hater- QED”

All the same I just wonder if Chatur is finding ‘prestige’ here too  especially in the mentioned scene.

  17. NyKavi

Btw, this movie going viral into crossover audiences now in the US:

    http://ff.im/-dNOiS

As for “Aal Izz Well”, however cheesy that line is, surprisingly, Indians in the C-suite in prestigious Wall Street and Silicon Valley firms have started using this mantra in their emails and talks now! As I had mentioned previously, the movie is slowly becoming a cultural phenomenon.

  18. Doga

    Abzee, agreed.

I have not actually spoken about it, but last few movies of Aamir
be it Lagaan,DCH,RDB,TZP and now 3 Idiots have been like huge talking points in the media for one reason or other, if you know what i mean, we saw magazines etc covering those movies which we dont see for regular movies.

Probably CDI got a lot of coverage too.

  19. Doga

Also Abzee, now that you bring it up, for all this time i was wondering and was being oblivious to the fact that 3 Idiots actually targets a very huge amount of NRI audiance overseas(Engineers/Tech Workers) and thus the reason for the huge success its seeing overseas.

I dare say that with 3 Idiots, Aamir might now have as strong NRI base(Tech Workers) as SRK(Family Based).

  20. Ihab

Yep. Aamir now has a very strong fan base all over the world. Very clever Aamir Khan is. His movies like RDB, DCH made youngsters go ga-ga over him. Then his movies like Lagaan, TZP won him women and family audience. Ghajini, he made fans from masses. And then with 3 Idiots.. He is making everyone his fan!

  21. sandy

Whatever problems one can have with 3 Idiots – it’s too preachy, it’s cheesy etc etc – if there’s one thing I absolutely did not mind was the toilet humour. It’s not a question of sensibilities or double standards, it’s to do with the ‘world’ that Hirani has set the film in ie Boys hostel life – he should hardly be expected to present such a life in an anti-septic manner, without it seeming unrealisitic! The comparison with Akki and Salman’s films are odious – because when most of such toilet humour is used in their films, it’s almost always a forced gag to evoke laughter, without any context. Here, the jokes are part of the narrative, and contribute towards creating a setting, which is fine. Yes, there were a few shots in the aal Izz Well song, which I thought was a bit distasteful. Also, as Tango says, the scene where they piss on Virus’s name plate could have been avoided. Barring these two instances, I think the humour was perfectly in place.

Coming to the delivery scene, this is actually a rather clever one and far from being cringe-worthy. Besides taking the narrative forward in the true sense, this scene is also helpul in making a rather nice statement – it underlines how men need not feel any shame to display their maternal side or be helpful in this regard. It’s never a gender thing beyond a point, esp not when you have to save a life. Yes, Hindi films have conditioned us to treat a delivery process as a rather ‘womanly ‘ affair…you had films where curtains and clothes would be put up around the woman etc. So this is actually a refereshing change from all that nonsense. When a life has to be saved, you don’t think of such things. Personally, I felt a bit wierd when the scene began, but it worked for me in a big way from there on.

  22. sandy

Also whether 3 Idiots is a prestigious film or not is a different argument, but I certainly don’t think that having toilet humour in a context makes it less prestigious. A film on prostitution can be prestigious even if it has exposure and nude scenes – that may seem offensive. There is no connection between the two things, unless either is done out of context.

  23. rks

Sandy – “Yes, Hindi films have conditioned us to treat a delivery process as a rather ‘womanly ‘ affair”

That is very true. And even in real world (in India) it is very much true. It has started to change but pregnancy, delivery, feeding a newborn and changing diapers are mostly women’s affair. In contrast, in West, a husband is most likely there from lamaze classes to cutting umbilical chord to changing diapers.

  24. Raju Guide

Very well said Sandy. I liked that Delivery scene even if it was bit OTT.
And Tango, saying someone’s films’s as prestigious does not undermine other’s achievements for sure.
Note: And Sandy liked KI as well – so there is no double standards ;)

  25. Akshay

Sandy – interesting thought about how this scene showed that men can also do it. I however feel, that it was not the director’s idea (ofcourse you will know better) while filming this scene.

I think it was more like how can one make use of the education and what one “really” learns. So when everyone was worried, here was Rancho who worked on the inverter or his own suction (vaccum) pump. Just a way of showing that there are resources and things all around you, just look around and apply yourself

  26. Akshay

btw isn’t that an interesting topic in itself about how we can apply learning and put things that are around us to good use all the time ? :)

  27. Tango

Raju guide -”And Tango, saying someone’s films’s as prestigious does not undermine other’s achievements for sure.
Note: And Sandy liked KI as well – so there is no double standards”

No Sandy does not prophesise these prestige and non-prestige philosophy. I was talking about one more of Chatur Singh’s torturous theories, that we have had to endure over the years
