DEC 27, 2009 – EXITING LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI, I WAS STRUCK by how Rajkumar Hirani had transformed the earlier film’s formula into a sequel that felt utterly non-formulaic. I wrote, “The easiest thing [they] could have done is to dust off the characters from the first outing and merely give them a bunch of new jokes to mouth, a set of new comic routines to execute. They could have dumped on us Munnabhai LLB or Munnabhai BEd or Munnabhai MSc.” That’s precisely what Hirani has done with 3 Idiots (adapted from Chetan Bhagat’s bestseller) – he recycles the Munnabhai MBBS formula into an utterly formulaic entertainment. The specialty under scrutiny may have switched from medicine to education, but little else has been tampered with: the catchword phrase (along the lines of “jadoo ki jhappi” and “Gandhigiri”) is now “all is well,” Boman Irani still plays the dictatorial overseer of the Evil Establishment whose doctor-daughter falls for the nominal hero, the wisecracking Circuit is bifurcated into the characters portrayed by Farhan (Madhavan) and Raju (Sharman Joshi), and most of all, the motivating maxim is still that the universe can be bettered by nothing more than the good thought, the kind word, the noble deed.

Rks: He has pointed out..
“Part of my disappointment, I admit, has to do with my expectations from both Hirani as well as Aamir – that birthing scene? Really?”

[SPOILER ALERT]
Re: Aamir-Madhavan stealing the papers from Virus’ office, and how it is anti-thetical to Rancho’s own proselytzing. If you notice, later when Virus barges into their room, discovers the paper and starts beating Rancho with the umbrella. Listen to the dialogs, he says, “system ko change karne aaye the, rascals..”. There is not a slight protest from the trio, Rancho’s head is hung in shame, so is of the other 2. After the rustication, you can see the resignation of the trio to their fate, when they packup and leave without saying another word. They knew what they did was wrong, and could not justify it. Rancho had fallen from his own high pedestal. Even after the baby delivery, he promptly picks up his stuff and exits, only to be stopped by Virus.
The baby delivery scene, if tried by any other director, wouldve fallen flat due to its implausibility. I mean, does anyone not account for the time to create that makeshift vaccuum device? It wouldve been hours to do it in real life, and by then the patient wouldve probably konked off. But its the handling and the superior acting by everyone involved that carries the day. Also, one could see that “baby not breathing and then kicking on all-izz-well exhortation” from a mile. One could see many many things from a mile such as: The first suicide, when the helicopter goes to Joy’s window. The suicide attempt by Idiot2 when faced with a dilemna. The off-screen suicide spoken off in reference (this you could gauge when Boman talks about it to Joy in the beginning). The entire Phunsuk Wangdu suspense and revelation. The reason for the Rancho coverup, etc. So it definitely wasnt some superior product that can be reviled, certainly not like TZP. But then, did reviewers expect Aamir to do a college-TZP in this movie? And did they expect Hirani to not continue with his “pop dispensing of messages” style here?
Let me say once again, its a stretch of logic to expect logic from bollywood. I liken most bwood movies to Broadway. And most times I wonder, why go waste $100 on Broadway when you can have more fun in your own language with $10 on bollywood. How many logical mainstream commercial movies has anyone ever made in bwood? I dont think any that I couldnt rip apart in shreds if I wanted to.
Anyway, it looks like aam junta-janardhan has lapped up this movie hugely. And also, barring a stray reviewer, not one has suggested to not see this movie. In fact everyone says, you should see it at least once for the sake of enjoying some of the zaniest comedy sequences and dialogs in recent history. Those gems just keep coming at you throughout this joyride. So hats off to all the idiots involved in making this movie.
