K-I-S-S: Keep It Simple, Stupid.

In Rajkumar Hirani’s [ Images ] latest film, a character steps to a blackboard and chalks up, for the benefit of a befuddled engineering college classroomful of students, the word ‘Farhanitrate,’ daring them to tell him what it means.

The word is a pun on the character’s best friend, Farhan, and while it may be a non-existant gag word in the film, the compound seems to exist in real life — Hirani’s film is doused liberally with Farhanitrate (in an Akhtar sense of the word) and several other directorial scents — including Hirani’s own touch, which is why by the time the end credits eventually roll around, you have a ‘been there, sniffed that’ feeling about it all.

There’s also a tragic, overriding feeling of futility. Why, you ask yourself, does a college film have to be made with middle-aged men playing the lead? Can we not trust younger actors to deliver, or has the insecurity of the star system blinded us to all reality?

This is such a poor review. Not because it is negative but because Raja Sen makes such a lame-ass case against the film. It’s almost as if he willed himself not to like it and then gets dismissive altogether.

He talks about how older heroes are playing college students, how Aamir could have performed this role in his sleep, so there is nothing new, how it doesn’t match up to the earlier Munnabhais. Not once does he say explain what exactly he didn’t like about the film. There are just random statements thrown around.

I prefered the earlier rediff review that really had something to state. Here there is nothing.

I think Raja Sen wrote this review after seeing first promo 2 months back. He just published it now.

I think Raja Sen had his headphones on, listening to something else while watching this movie. There is not a single comment on the excellent dialogs, the valid and interesting references to college life, culture, issues, etc. Either the guy never went to college, or never pursued a career. Otherwise, I cant explain how anyone can miss all that.
And before people start talking about me as an Aamir-fanatic, let me state here that without Hirani’s script and direction, this movie wouldve been just like any other Akshay brainless flick, or an entire length movie based on the college segments of KKHH/MHN. I think any person out there who has attended even the 1st year of college will relate to this movie in many ways. So, really, Aamir’s act is only one of the components of this brilliant script. And unsurprisingly, there is a lot of character development of all the other guys, Aamir has the central role as Rancho, but that role does not find any justification without the characters surrounding him.
