The story is obviously based on Chetan Bhagat’s 5 Point Someone but Rajkumar Hirani has made a lot of changes by his own admission. The movie flits between the past and the present and is a bit lengthy. But just when the movie seems like it is dragging a bit there is a funny scene that makes one forget that. The screenplay by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Rajkumar Hirani and Abhijit Joshi is excellent and the way the whole ‘Wangdu’ thing is woven into the movie is just brilliant. Dialogues by Rajkumar Hirani and Abhijit Joshi are excellent. The movie borrows a lot from the Munnabhai movies. The rebel rebelling against the authority figure and being in love with his daughter is similar to Munnabhai MBBS. Scenes like trying to revive Raju or the little kid are similar to the carrom scene from Munnabhai MBBS. Farhan confessing to his father that he does not like engineering is similar to Jimmy Sheirgill’s confession scene in Lage Raho Munnabhai.
Rajkumar Hirani’s direction is excellent but he could have avoided all the toilet humor. He gives a similar message to Taare Zameen Par while making one laugh. He asks everyone to follow their passion and not just study to have a secure life. The message “Seek excellence and success will follow” is conveyed very well without ever coming off as preachy. He follows in the path of Hrishikesh Mukherjee in making entertaining movies with a message. Rancho’s character is similar to Rajesh Khanna’s character in Bawarchi in that he influences the lives around him with his philosophy and the shocking revelation.
The movie is in the same vein as his previous two movies and he proves that he can make an entertaining movie even without Munnabhai and Circuit. Rajkumar Hirani, who worked as an ad film maker, can certainly come up with popular catch phrases. After the popular “Jadoo ki Jhappi” and “Get Well Soon” there is a new one “Aal izz Well”. He makes the most implausible situations work with his honesty and conviction. There are scenes where one might think “this is ridiculous” but one will still want to believe it. 3 Idiots is all heart – an excellent feel good entertainer and the best movie of the year 2009.

Oh boy! What a movie 3 Idiots is! I got the same overwhelming feeling that I got after seeing a Chak De or TZP. For me this is the best movie after Lagaan. I agree with Qalandar that both haves of the film are strong enough, but I found the second half particularly brilliant. The film does not have the depth of a TZP, but it carries an emotional sweep quite hard to put in words.
I absolutely adored Sharman here. Madhavan next. Aamir surprised me in the manner in which he pitched his character and ‘became’ the character. Kareena is nice, but someone I couldn’t visualise her in Hirani’s word and I had mixed feelings about her pairing with Aamir here. BOman I thought I wouldn’t like at all going by some reviews. Let’s say, I didn’t mind him, but yes his character was funnier in the 2 Munnabhais. But 3 Idiots makes up for it with Omi’s character – Chatur Ramalingum – perfectly pitched and acted.
All in all, an experience not to be missed at all.
At the boxoffice, it’s a hurricane from the word go.

Let me say one thing about ticket hikes though. No matter how good the film, I don’t think it is right to burden the regular cine goer with these sort of prices. I was seeing on television how even consumer activists have now jumped into the fray. There are students protesting at places, saying they get regular pocket money and cannot afford the hiked prices. I really think Aamir, VVC and the multiplexes should have spared a thought to people who look at movies as a good way to celebrate festive occasions. Not right at all. I think a Rs 20-30 increase across the board is still fine, but anything more is being plainly greedy.

Raju Hirani , Take a bow to undisputable finest director Bollywood has ever produced, Raj Kumar Hirani. If Munna Bhai entitled him as one of best debutant director of Indian cinema ever, Sequel Lage Raho Munna Bhai proved that first installment was not a fluke. With three idiots, Raju not only come out of Munna/Circuit Saga, but also take one step ahead which was looking impossible at first place due to highly acclaimed and excellent Munna Bhai series.

agree with sandy. It’s clear that VVC is acting this way because he has nothing going for him except for the films Hirani directs — it’s his only shot at money making and he is exploiting it to the hilt.
Query: is the hike across all shows, or only for the weekday morning shows? and are people everywhere experiencing this?

From what Chopra said at the before-release press conference (with a Bharat-darshan tired Aamir looking at Chopra silently)–the hike is for the holiday week-end. Which means that after Sunday, ticket prices should return to pre-hike levels.
In Chennai my ticket for Thursday Dec 31st 3Idiots show (11.30am) at Satyam cineplex costs me Rs120/-.

Q: The hike is across the board in big cities for all shows. I’m not sure if it is applicable at smaller centres.

There should be no problem about the Ticket Prices, who want to see the movie will see.
If some people skip the movie because of the price, they will catch it later, if not, then the movie didnt deserve it, simple.
Its like a premium, Aamir/VVC think their movie is the BMW of movies, thus the extra charge, they think they deserve and the people who are willing to do it will.
