Just as much as James Cameron’s cinematic vision completely vowed me in Avatar, James Horner’s terrific background score aided and added to my experience in no less measure. Horner’s work on Avatar is bound to get recognition come Oscar time. Here are some of my favourite musical pieces from the film.

01) The theme of the Jake-Neytiri romance set against the pristine backdrop of the luminescent night of Pandora is so pure that the music feels like its making soft, sensual love to you. Listen to the tune kick in at around 0:36.

02) Jake’s attempts at trying to tame the wild Ikran, and his first flight after having conquered him is played out against a lovely rousing theme by Horner with Na’vi lyrics as chorus. The Jake-Neytiri romance theme is used as a motif, while they swoop over Pandora.

03) Horner’s background score to underline the nefarious designs of Col. Quaritch and the destruction of the Na’vi hometree is a lovely orchestral work. But listen to this from 05:20 mark…the score almost speaks translates the loss…and the gravity and sadness of it.

04) My favourite theme of the film. The whole montage of Jake becoming a part of the Na’vi clan and his budding romance with Neytiri is played out to a fabulous instrumental arrangement. The opening is beautiful, but around the 0:50 mark, and then again at 01:40, it just becomes superb!

05) This is when Jake ‘accepts’ his Na’vi avatar self. One of the less spectacular works, but there’s a certain composure to it which I quite like on repeated hearings. Besides, this piece accompanies the most beautiful scene in the film…when the spirit seeds descend on Jake…at around the 02:30 mark when Horner rightly raises his game!

I am going to disagree with you Abzee. The score was very underwhelming and confused. It could have pushed the film higher if someone like Hanz Zimmer was on it.

The best theme was the one played in the trailers.

Saw Avatar 3D, good entertaining fun movie. 9/10 by me.

Dont think its as pathbreaking as it has been made out to be, Jurassic Park Graphics were more path breaking.

Story,Dialogues,Screenplay is so old but its in New bottle.

People clapped in the end so WOM should be great.

Doga- Avatar isn’t being ‘made out’ to be path breaking. IT IS!!! One can question the film on its content, storyline, background score…anything really, but its technological achievement. Whether Avatar is path breaking or not is not a yes or no question…it is a fact that it is.

You’re comparing the graphics of Avatar to Jurassic Park. But Avatar isn’t being called path breaking or a game-changer for its graphics. It is being called so for its advancements in motion capture technology (it would be apt if you were to compare it to a Beowulf, and you’ll see the difference) and the innovation of 3D Fusion Cameras which basically allows you 360 degree filmmaking! Those never existed…Cameron and his team have worked at it!

Rohit- I like Zimmer a lot. His Rain Man theme is timeless. My all time favourite composer is of course Thomas Newman, but he wouldn’t suited for such a film. He gives lovely scores for those smaller personal films.

But when it comes to blockbusters, I think it really comes down to Williams, Goldsmith and Horner. Newton Howard comes up occasionally, but it’s usually just these three. Horner is guilty of his four-note motif, but I still like him for his reliance on templates. Williams is a full-on symphony (except Catch Me If You Can which was his most atypical yet best score)…Goldsmith does your thriller-action genre more.

It is really Horner then who, despite his limited range, is able to balance it out.

One is of course free to disagree.

Abzee my response was to people who are giving Avatar 100 out of 10 and having orgasms reviewing it. ;)

My 9 out of 10 is still 91 less than them.

The camera etc stuff the more technological people will know, but visuals/colours/flowers/petals etc were really great.

All in all probably 20% better graphics than Regular HW CGI stuff.

Compared it to Jurassic park because the way Avatar is promoted is like we have never seen something before, which except for few things i didnt see.

I saw the making, i guess the most important thing they did was to have smaller cameras to get facial reactions all the time and then embed them in the CGI. Motion Capture seemed pretty regular.

Having said that, lets see how Avatar changes the face of cinema as we know.

Doga, u have all the right to express ur opinion but here i’m agree with abzee on the points mentioned above.
Being an Engineer and associated with research , i can understand the patience James Cameron had.He spent more than 2 years with Sony Engineers of Japan along with his Cameramen to DISCOVER 3D FUSION CAMERA which is REALLY REALLY PATH BREAKING in the field of Motion Capture Technology, as abzee also mentioned.
Basically it is CINEMATOGRAPHY and CAMERAWORK which will DEFINITELY and SURELY change the way we see the Movies and that is why i call it AHEAD OF THIS TIME Movie.

Agree with Doga completely. The movie is mediocre except for the visual effects. ‘Content doesn’t matter, story does not matter’ are all ridiculous excuses. Then why not praise Blue?
After all it had great visuals too (except the portly Sanjay Dutt). People complained about a plot there. Its just hypocrisy. If the same movie was a Hindi movie, these people would have blasted the movie saying they should have spent some money on the script too.

George Castanza says in Seinfeld “Without a great story, its just masturbation” and this explains all the orgasms people have been having.

Frankly, I think people are just hyping it up. So many scenes are just lol funny. Did anyone observe this (may be only my dirty mind did)? Netiri has her breasts covered at all times by the necklace but in the scene just before they have sex, her breasts are visible. Jake jumping on the ship and dropping bombs was so hindi film style.

it seems that some people are still living in ‘ Stone Age ‘ , they don’t want to understand the meaning of Technology even if they themselves are using it like commenting and blogging , i think some movie have special qualities and AVATAR is one of them so people should try to accept and respect it.
