MUMBAI — Roland Emmerich’s “2012″ has become the highest grossing Hollywood film ever in India collecting more than Rupees 900 million ($19.2 million) in five weeks on release so far, Sony Pictures India has revealed.
2007 release “Spider-Man 3″ held the previous record of $14.2 million.
“2012″ is now the second highest grossing film of the year in India after Rajkumar Santoshi’s “Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani,” which has grossed more than $21 million.
Sony Pictures India managing director Kercy Daruwala said: “Our approach to marketing and distributing this film was to engage all sections of the audience, multiplex as well as single screen, metros as well as small towns, much like any large-scale Indian film. We believe this approach paid off by bringing in audiences who may not generally watch Hollywood films.”

With this movie, promoters of certain religion in India have one more point to discuss…till 2012, and pakao everyone around them.
I do not know exactly how seriously people took this movie in India (esp in smaller towns – were they watching it from religious angle or global warming effect or fiction or mix of all these) but some people around me took it as fun movie..which it was.
