The Promo is good. But expected more. And why they gave the story away like some HW movies in this long promo? Is that what they mean by being “international”? All other things pyar mohobbat insaniyat ka rona dhona is same btw.
I would have preferred a shorter promo with some curiosity factor.
In any case thing will be taking indian cinema to wider audience and will be BB.

Well first of all, i think SRK has a serious shot at Taking the Acting award for 2010, if whatever shown in the trailer comes out well in the movie. The biggest problem that i found with the trailer is its too long for its own cause and it gives the entire story line of the movie to the audience. This could have got 2 reactions, another 911 US based film or looks like Kjo, SRK and Kajol..nice after a long tym, kuch alag film hogi.
I think i liked the trailer and i expect BB music from SEL if they are the part of it. MY liking for the movie is its shot in SF Bay Area and CA .so i can relate to it .
Overall thankfully they didnt release the movie in 2009 else it would have been too many 911 based movies NY, Kurbaan and this.
But overall this has a limited appeal imo.

well between the first promos of 3I, Veer, Kites and MNIK – my ranking
At no. 3 is a tie between Kites and 3I
At no. 2 is MNIK
and at no. 1 the original Khan in Veer
To be very fair, i am disappointed. Story is almost given and reminds me of Newyork (not really kurbaan though).
But SRK performance is one trump card which enables this promo and further movie a dekko kinda feel. Music of movie should be another high point.

The trailer seems to be Hollywoodish in the sense of giving out the whole story. The only thing missing is that great voice of Don LaFontaine (he died last year) starting the trailer with the famous words “In a world…”.
The movie seems to be My Left Foot (with the kid’s growing problems) and Forrest Gump (the country traveling part) with 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina thrown in. Shah Rukh is trying to act like Dustin Hoffman (Rain Man) and seems to be doing ok (but will have to wait for the movie to see if he hammed) and I think Karan himself has mentioned Rain Man in one of his interviews.
Karan Johar might just mess this up big time with too many things in one movie. I will be surprised if this movie turns out to be good given Karan’s previous work.

Doga what happened to you dont see you much. Not much from you on Veer. I liked the song promo “Salaam Aaya”
I must confess to a great exasperation with the permanent victimhood peddled by these post-9/11 films (I do not mean to slight the ill treatment of some Muslims post-9/11; but the luridness with which this promo and other films present it make it seem like Germany 1938 — admittedly that’s a high bar, but it’s aggravating when (e.g.) Khuda Ke Liye graphically depicts torture at the hands of the americans, while having nothing to say about the sort of torture that is ROUTINE in (e.g.) Pakistani (or India, or wherever) prisons). Critical thinking has to be about interrogating the status quo and subjecting it to rigorous examination — not in marketing the luxury of permanent self-pity, and one with no sense of proportion. Especially as these films are so gutless they won’t even touch upon sensitive topics like discrimination against muslims etc. IN INDIA — a topic of far greater relevance given that India has suffered way more attacks from Muslim extremists than America has — I mean it’s incredible how totally NRIcentric Johar’s vision is when even this sort of thing becomes real only in a US-setting. Truly, as the students wrote on the walls in Paris 1968, “life is elsewhere”.
Thanks Rohit, good point re: #43, I had missed that…

Superbly stated Q!
I am not at all discounting the entertainment quotient of this movie, if it goes to break all BO records, more power to it. I hope we have great music, great cinematography etc. But I sincerely hope people see this movie as a work of complete fiction, rather than try to extract any types of “messages” from it.
From what can be seen in the promo, there is a lot of muslim-bashing shown post 9/11, which IMO is OTT. Incidents such as these were exceptions rather than the norm in a country like the US. There were no riots, mass killings or mass beatings after 9/11. If people acted suspiciously, they had a right to do so. I myself was on a flight just the second day after airlines resumed services, and was stared at, questioned extensively, all because I was brown skinned and had kept a beard.
After an incident like Ft Hood, (which btw POTUS has yet not declared as terrorism) as well as the numerous other terrorist plots which have been uncovered, there actually is not much sympathy that can be imparted in this sleeper-cell infiltrated society that we live in. For SRK, life indeed met with art, as can be seen from that airport cavity-search scene in this promo. But, once again, if there is a debate, I am sure that there will be all sortsa people trying to take a message from this movie. God forbid if people start doing candlelit marches to stop the extra layer of precautions exercised by every country that has been stricken by Islamic terrorism. The intended “message” in this movie is actually quite dangerous because it pleads with people to become lax in their approach towards the threat of Islamic terrorism.
If indeed we have to search for needles in haystacks, what possible alternative do we have, other than to completely dishevel each straw of the haystack?

Epic Fail! I can seriously write an essay on why this promo itself is so bad and what it should not represent. Karan Johar once again blows the chance of a meaningful cinema. Of course, I mean on an intelligent thinking.
This is sad. Very wrong first look to say the least. KJO should just stick to basic romance like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. If after 11 years that remains his only best movie, then I question his talent as a director.
wow…totally disappointed. With all those red, white and blue balloons…you know what, let me know comment any further on this at this moment.
A profound statement by Q! My comment was “Looks BETTER than I expected, but then again I had zilch expectations here…FORREST GUMP meets THE TERMINAL meets KURBAAN meets?!”
Furthermore, hope the movie doens’t end with Khan finding the president and giving him a sermonizing lecture at the end ala V-Z climax?!

NYk, Q and Rohit – what exactly are you trying to say? That there was no discrimination against Muslims after 9/11 or that it was justified.
You are touching on a very emotive subject which has no right answer. Of course – there have been wide spread discrimination. Arre – indirectly Obama won becoz of the policies arising out of the discrimination. And Q – why make this debate silly by asking why not cover the discrimination in India. For obvious reasons of course – you think you can get away with making a movie like that. Finally they are making this movie to win accolades and not to change someone’s thinking or for some social cause. Swades was a movie made with a social cause, Parzania was a movie made with a social cause, etc etc.
Lets not be so naive as to look at this movie and act as if Kjo is destroying the fabric of society etc etc.
>>The intended “message” in this movie is actually quite dangerous because it pleads with people to become lax in their approach towards the threat of Islamic terrorism

December 16, 2009
Now my big question on this movie is similar to our discussion on Paa. Was it really necessary to make SRK an autistic character? To me autism with 9/11 with Katrina is a little too much. If indeed this movie has a message – as is being propagated by Q – then I for one would be confused if that message is coming because of autism or because of 9/11. Frankly – my belief is that’s where this movie will fail. I have always believed that the beauty in a good story is in its simplicity. At least from what i saw – Karan is making this into some kind of a complex drama!
NyKavi
December 16, 2009
SRK: “MNIK and I am not a terrorist”
Administration: “Trust but verify!”
Thats as simple as it can be.
Beld, no one denies that there was discrimination against Muslims in the US. But you have to also ask, how much was it. There are more than 6 million muslims here, it would be a stretch to think that even a significant minority of them feel heavily discriminated against. There is more deep-seated discrimination against blacks in the US, even now, than against muslims.
The biggest lesson of 9/11 is that law enforcement and a lot of public in general were totally ignorant of the threat within. Since 9/11, barring the Ft Hood incident, there have been no more incidents precisely because that callousness was overcome. Only because of heightened surveillance, there are numerous terrorist plots that are uncovered every few months.
In the single case which escaped the surveillance (ie Ft Hood), this guy was exchanging emails with an extremist preacher overseas, and his emails were not given due importance by army supervisors. They quite obviously never believed that someone in the army can go become a terrorist. But they were sadly proven otherwise, and now the brunt of the suspicion will fall on every muslim soldier serving in the US military. If an army major can go unnoticed as a would be terrorist, and end up killing a bunch of his compatriots in the name of Islam, how can we not justify these tactics. If even .00001% of the muslim population are sleeper cell terrorists trying to cause harm, that microscopic minority can only be identified by broad surveillance which definitely includes racial profiling. How else can you identify a needle in a haystack? It is very idealistic to espouse justice, liberty etc. But just the number of plots which get uncovered, justifies these means.
I know that KJo is the last guy qualified to actually make a thought-provoking serious movie about anything. If he really wanted to make an entertaining movie, devoid of any seriousness, he shouldve not even skirted this terrorism issue. He has opened a can of worms, and now he has to deal with it. Whatever was presented in the 2min promo was enough to cause concern.

”
Beld, KJo in his current avatar seems to be tackling every social cause possible to show on cinema by including aspergers, terrorism, discrimination, katrina, etc. etc. in this movie. He surely never said that this was not going to be a serious movie, and he has tried to attempt this vast ambitious canvas in his own signature style. That style is defntly diff from Parzania/Swades, but IMO the intent or seriousness he is trying to portray is not any different. Up until the failure of Kurbaan, he was not shying from espousing all these angles. I think he has gotten scared after Kurbaan to play up the terrorism angle too much, he knows that he may have gotten this wrong.

December 16, 2009
NyK – dont get me wrong. You echo my thoughts on the situation in the US. But where I am disagreeing is that I didnt see anything in the movie where he was blaming the American way of handling this – at least based on the promo. Now the fact that Kjo has chosen that topic to narrate his story on autism and love – may not be very appropriate. But cmon man – you are giving him too much credit for trying to influence way of thinking etc.
Just purely from a movie and business standpoint – I think KJo and SRK have targeted the wide Muslim base in India and abroad – who I am sure have this feeling of persecution – rightly or wrongly. The question is whether SRK will rope in the middle age aunties of other religions to see this movie. That would determine its fate – more or less. BTW – someone had made a point earlier that this isnt exactly the right time in the geo-political world that we live in to release a movie like this. Maybe a couple of years ago when Bush was seen as a universal villain. Now that has died down and I think everyone is just concerned about safety and security and not about discrimination.

Beld, just that airport cavity search scene will be enough to propagate an incorrect viewpoint. What the heck are US authorities, or even any other country’s authorities supposed to do when they get suspicious about a traveller?
On the BO prospect, IMO, this movie will find a huge cross-over target audience in the Gulf/MiddleEastern countries. Even in the US, you can expect a huge number of muslim audiences. Yes, they do feel persecuted, I would too, if I was in their shoes. Even if as you say, Kjo should not be taken seriously to deliver ‘message’ cinema, those audiences will derive a lot of messages from this movie. The others who will be influenced are the naive hardcore fans that are too idealistic in their worldview, and lap anything from SRK/Kjo.
I dont for a second doubt that this movie will be a huge hit. But in the name of serious cinema, the message here is very dangerous.

NYK – I don’t think someone older is going to enunciate gray shades in human characteristics to a young mind? I don’t know about others but I use to think in black and white as kid
My first response to the promo was of shock. Karan JOhar has stuffed into the film every natural disaster out there, and then you have the autism and terrorism angle as well. All it does is create the impression of a very confused, muddled film.
As I was saying yesterday, I simply do not think Karan and Shibani Bhatija have enough acuity to deal with serious topics. Unless Karan’s intellectual understanding on political matters has dramatically grown manifold since Kurbaan!
Even if KANK was serous enough, that was still familiar territory for him. This looks like he’s trying hard to make a relevant, meaningful film for himself and SRK. With those jail scenes and cavity searches, he’s getting into Bhandarkar’s gritty terrain now.The promo does not inspire confidence and like Qalandar said, there is a definite exhaustion about the 9/11 backdrop.
Can the film still be good? Karan is saying the film is anchored in a love story (Let’s forget for a minute that he said the exact thing about Kurbaan also), and on that front, he’s a good, engaging director. Whatever the mess around, Karan can be trusted with making a poignant, heart felt love story. And with his great taste in music, this whole part might just be worth a watch. In fact, I think the film will look better with songs kicking in.
But I’m fairly skeptical of it being a cohesive, good film.
Ritz: Ya, one would assume so. He can’t be singing romantic duets like ‘Tu jhe de kha to ja na’ kinds.

Again, haven’t we all done this at some point…meet the US President so that it’ll help us in reuniting with our lady love. Thank God, Obama’s the Prez…with a certain Clinton, you’d have to say bye-bye to your lady love or find her under his desk!

And oh…he’s not a Muslim….His name just happens to have ‘an Islamic touch’! Whatever that is supposed to mean! I guess I’m not a Hindu either, my name just happens to have a ‘Hindu’ touch. This is such a powerful statement the film is making…we are all above our religions, we don’t belong to any one particular religion. Our names don’t say what religion we are, they just have a certain ‘touch’ of some religion!
“Again, haven’t we all done this at some point…meet the US President so that it’ll help us in reuniting with our lady love. Thank God, Obama’s the Prez…with a certain Clinton, you’d have to say bye-bye to your lady love or find her under his desk!”

‘My Name Is Khan’ has Shah Rukh Khan playing an autistic child at the initial stages of the flick. Kajol is shown showering her affections even at that time.
So SRK is playing the child as well! And Kajol is ’showering’ him even then! So is this also like Benjamin Button where he grows up, but she remains the same. I’m confused…such a level of scholarly writing always does! What is this film really about!

Btw, in the promo just before the words “Until The Day That Changed Everything” flashes on screen (around the 01:05 mark)…is SRK reaching out for Kajol’s ass or his kid’s? For a moment I was like, oh so everything changed the day his wife realized that he’s into…ahem…’ASS’!

First let me start by saying that I do not like any of Karan Johar’s movies. They are all cheesy and ridiculous. But I don’t think the promo is that bad. I don’t think anyone should expect reality from a KJo movie. KJo and reality is an oxymoron.
But give the guy KJo a chance. If he had made one more love story he would have been ridiculed and now that he is trying something different he is being ridiculed too. Its like Damned if he does, Damned if he doesn’t. Years ago there used to be a cartoon on DD based on the famous Aesop’s fable The Man, the Boy, and the Donkey. I think it applies well here. http://www.pagebypagebooks.com.....ey_p1.html

Qalandar,
Now you have said that you are exasperated with all the post 9/11 victim hood movies.
Now I am exasperated with all the movies with characters with special needs like KMG,Black,TZP, Paa, MNIK and Guzaarish (coming soon). I am also exasperated with all the movies where a Muslim character is either a terrorist or accused of terrorism. Looks like 3 Idiots finally has a regular Muslim guy Farhan (Madhavan). I am also exasperated with all the Punjabi movies and movies with Sikh characters.
Are people exasperated with all the movies based on World War, Holocaust and aliens and other planets because Hollywood keeps churning them out year after year? Clint Eastwood made two World War movies the same year. Hell this year’s QT movie is also on World War.
Now you say that he should have made the movie based in India and shown discrimination of Muslims in India. Do you seriously think that such a movie will not be stopped by some right wing organization. WUS had Bombay instead of Mumbai and KJo had to apologize. Why will he go through that trouble?
There have been a lot of movies based on terrorism in India too like Roja, Dil Se, Maachis, A Wednesday, Mumbai Meri Jaan, Sikandar, Hijack, Zameen, Khakee, Dev, YMI, Black Friday.
Now these movies (New York, Kurbaan and MNIK) are just trying to cash in on the success of KKL. Now KKL (yes it has some flaws) seemed like an honest effort while these seem to be fake.
Now you are saying why Khuda Kay Liye did not say anything about the torture in Pakistani/Indian prisons? Now has there been a single mainstream Hollywood movie which showed the Palestinian suffering?
Khuda Kay Liye did deal with forced marriage and mullahs brainwashing youngsters and stopping them from playing music. The last 15 minutes took those mullahs head on and I thought pretty well.

its not only extended to india and pakistani set up but the general condition of minorities in islamic republic where there are deprived of their basic right and thats basically ignored
so whats goes around comes back in this modern world of liberalization where people tend to reciprocate and thats frankly my opinion without being politically correct and due respect to all

It seems Karan Johar has tried to showcase the changing behavioral patterns of US securities agencies in the wake of 9/11 New York attack. Shah Rukh Khan’s powerful display of his humiliation in the US just because his name had an Islamic touch, will certainly go a long way in focusing the attention of the world to this unfortunate phenomenon ”
This statement was PRICELESS!! Gawwwd..the lengths to which print and media journos can go to win a few favors from Kjo-SRK. Arent we all lucky that we have forums such as ours, where unvarnished opinions can be discussed and debated, for all to read freely?
“..As the trailer of ‘My Name Is Khan’ shows clearly, King Khan has successfully conveyed the pain of being racially profiled in a country that boasts about itself to be the biggest protector of individual freedom in the world..”
See Beld, didnt I tell you, how hardcore fans will start to derive dangerous ‘messages’ from this movie. Now these guys are getting into lofty idealism, talking of racial profiling and suppression of individual freedoms in the US. These guys (and this movie) sitting 20k miles away make the US look like some giant prison system. This is ridiculous.

Rockstar read this brilliant article by Sudheer Kulkarnee-
As long as Saudi Oil has funding power, they will keep funding the nutty liberals in the west to win all kinds of special freedoms for Islam. But they will not budge on a single reciprocal freedom to minorities in the Muslim world. It is surprising that Europeans who are more liberal than Americans, have actually started rolling back these special freedoms. France banned the hijab in schools, Swiss banning minarets, etc. These freedoms just cannot be curtailed in the US, the Constitution is so solid on individual freedoms. And despite that, our dear friend Kjo makes a movie about racial profiling and suppression of individual freedoms. Boss, the US is the first western country to elect a non-white as head of state, that too one who is half-muslim.
As long as people see this movie for pure entertainment only, its fine. But just do not subscribe to the dangerous message this movie is trying to portray.
Sputnik: there have been many such movies in India that have shown discrimination against Muslims and NOT been stopped by anybody: Khakee, Dev, to take those two. A film like Firaaq and Parzania was released in the country too, although I think Gujarat might have banned them. The point being, this NRI-fixation is too much: with Kabhi Alvida Johar said the subject meant it had to be in the US (Indians don’t have affairs?!) What is the reason this time.
On representations of Muslims etc. in Bollywood, check out these threads for discussion/examples of other representations (don’t say “finally” on Maddy in 3 Idiots, there have been others, in fact just looking at Hirani’s own films you are forgetting Jimmy Shergill in Munnabhai 1):
Re: “Now I am exasperated with all the movies with characters with special needs like KMG,Black,TZP, Paa, MNIK and Guzaarish (coming soon). Qalandar,
Thanks for the links. The comments from you and others in the link are very interesting. TV serials set in India have been showing extra marital affairs since the 90s so why cant a movie?
KJo is not the only one with the NRI fixation but this movie probably makes more sense to be set in the US as it deals with a racial attack following 9/11.
There have been so many movies that will probably make more sense if they are set in India. I think they write the story with all Indian characters but set it abroad. Its like those old movies that used to be shot on sets the only change here is that instead of sets we have real locations abroad.
On Zaheer of Munnabhai, he was not in a leading role. Iqbal is probably the last one where his Muslimness was not an issue.
I think the movie is too pricey for its genre. So yes, in that way i find it as the riskiest big budget movie now displacing Kites.
But it’s too early to comment on BO specifics, more so when SRK is there. I however feel that he has the weakest lineup of films amongst top 10 stars.

good to see you q after a long time hows you
first thing first on khuda kay liye it may be good on some scale on a pakstani set up but the mindstep and general politics was visible to hilt
when u see a pakistani says we( with special emphashis ) built the taj mahal and sing rag kamud and describe it as pakistani classical its hillarious to hilt ( a song in braj which describes the flirtious nature of krishna)
( from past even in bollywood).. similarly as q said many better movies have been presented
when you don’t count ur comind history and manipulates it … similarly this describes the general intolerance of others faith nothing more
on certain section it scores but it was no way a benchmark
who are we if you don’t beleive in any of combined history and neglects the major part of it
on this current scale of 9/11 discrimination and so on its just the bollywood attempt go global and milk some money from untapped market but unfortunately its way over the top and from the look of thing my name is khan looks no different

Rockstar, agreed on your viewpoints. On Nir Bharan Ke, a nostalgic song from childhood, another link when it was presented in bwood:
Rockstar, notice also, that when bwood presented this song in the movie on Krishna, Radha was played by Zarina Wahab. What more cultural integration does Pakistan want to see?
I myself have mentioned umpteen times here that if there is a LOTR scale movie made on Mahabharat, the best actor in my mind who can play Krishna is SRK. He has all the complete package to essay that role. Yet, people will call me SRK-hater.

“when u see a pakistani says we( with special emphashis ) built the taj mahal and sing rag kamud and describe it as pakistani classical its hillarious to hilt ( a song in braj which describes the flirtious nature of krishna)”
Did you watch the whole scene? When asked about Pakistan he talks about Muslims (not Pakistanis) having ruled the world and then she hands him over a Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Cd. I think the scene shows his stupidity and shows that people know Pakistan more by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s music than some conquests by these Muslim rulers.
Here is a review which addresses this same issue.
“The scene where Mansoor tries to impress Janie by saying that we built the Taj Mahal and that we ruled India and Spain sounds ridiculous. Mansoor implies Muslims as Pakistanis which is totally wrong. May be the director intended to show Mansoor’s stupidity in talking about conquests when music makes much more impact than any conquest. Some Indians may feel that this and an other scene in the prison which mentions Kashmir as jingoistic but can be excused as it is a Pakistani movie and Indian movies have had worse jingoistic scenes than these.” http://www.tanqeed.com/movies/kkl.cfm

It would be foolish to doubt that MNIK will do well. In fact it will defn break all BO records overseas, especially in Gulf/MidEast, Malaysia-Indoneasia, North Africa, and any other place where there is a huge muslim crossover audience. The intended message of this movie appeals hugely to those audiences, there is just no way that this movie can fail.
But, when SRK claims that this movie will open Bwood to overseas, that satement strikes me as presumptuous. When there is a rich Indian culture and heritage available, which has not even been scratched at the surface, SRK-KJO make a movie on “post 9/11 muslim persecution in the US” and claim that this is India’s premier offering to the world. Maybe if they had any conviction, they wouldve rather made a movie about Mahabharat. You watch Avatar/LOTR, etc. and feel distinct sadness that despite the much superior material available to India, which can add immense meaning to the splendour and spectacle dished out by the likes of Cameron, there is not a single director who can even try to attempt a movie of that spectacle. The Chinese have martial arts as their USP, and they made stuff like Crouching Tiger. We needed a Brit to make Slumdog. God knows when someone will have the conviction to make a true culturally representative movie about Indian values. Current bwood is morally bankrupt in this regard.

I believe you are making assumptions which may not be true…SRK or KJo never claimed that they are making anything “International” or “”Premium offering”"”…They only said they are trying to open up Indian movies to as much markets as possible…(Why not ?)Now these are clearly two different things…

A bit of Forrest Gump. A world seen though the eyes of a simpleton and how he changes everyone around him. Something different for K Jo and SRK. What I am interested to see if the public will be interested in watching this on the big screen enough to make it a huge hit.
i am with cticize. BTW this must be the longest anyone has acted autistic. Rain Man was only 1.5 hrs – this must be at least 2.5 to 3hrs
Yep it has to be short, last KJO films have been 3 hrs plus.
well between the first promos of 3I, Veer, Kites and MNIK – my ranking
At no. 3 is a tie between Kites and 3I
At no. 2 is MNIK
and at no. 1 the original Khan in Veer
I agree with the listing
..
I saw the Promo with no Audio(at work), seems fine.
The ambience is similar to KJO movies in general, so should be huge hit overseas.
SRK seems to be doing good too.
Will comment again after watching with music.
This movie will follow the trend of 3 Idiots, with diverse reactions to the initial promo’s but by the end(that is February 2010), most will be hooked to it and will give a dekho in halls.
Doga what happened to you dont see you much. Not much from you on Veer. I liked the song promo “Salaam Aaya”

Well said Q. Amazing.
I find a big irony in the promo; in the beginning, the mom says “…there are 2 types of people, people who do good and people who do bad”.
Isn’t that what Bush 43 said in the infamous Axis of Evil “Us vs Them” speech that lead to the paranoia Kjo and Co are now cashing millions on?

Thanks Rohit, good point re: #43, I had missed that…
IMO if anyone, the upper class Hindus are facing the discrimination in India, baki sab tau Damaad hain !!!
Maybe we watched different promos NyK. Is this coming from SRK saying – My Name is Khan but I aint a terrorist? I think you are making a huge assumption based on a 2 min promo…
btw nyk – now i wonder if that whole immigration incident in real life was a set up
If that happens to be the case – it would be pathetic…
Now my big question on this movie is similar to our discussion on Paa. Was it really necessary to make SRK an autistic character? To me autism with 9/11 with Katrina is a little too much. If indeed this movie has a message – as is being propagated by Q – then I for one would be confused if that message is coming because of autism or because of 9/11. Frankly – my belief is that’s where this movie will fail. I have always believed that the beauty in a good story is in its simplicity. At least from what i saw – Karan is making this into some kind of a complex drama!
“Finally they are making this movie to win accolades and not to change someone’s thinking or for some social cause. Swades was a movie made with a social cause, Parzania was a movie made with a social cause, etc etc.
>>>Up until the failure of Kurbaan, he was not shying from espousing all these angles. I think he has gotten scared after Kurbaan to play up the terrorism angle too much, he knows that he may have gotten this wrong
Yup – I think so too…
Beld, just that airport cavity search scene will be enough to propagate an incorrect viewpoint.
But in the name of serious cinema, the message here is very dangerous.
nyk – has there been any movie (mainstream) made on Muslim persecution post 9/11 ? If this is the first one – then I see Fox hardselling this as such. SRK talked about opening up markets – and we typically associate US and Europe – but I think this opens up markets in Middle East, Far east, Africa etc. I dare say this belt will outgross the US and UK and maybe India too
” but I think this opens up markets in Middle East, Far east, Africa etc. I dare say this belt will outgross the US and UK and maybe India too
”
I seriously wont be surprised, given the content. And if it does, why wud Kjo-Srk care anyway. Green is anyday better than red.
alrite Nyk – enuff of MNIK – lets get back to Avatar and 3I.
Avatar ka US mein kya scene hain?
chal mein nikaltha hoon – catch u later dude. ritz – where are u – whats happening with 3I da?
Wow! Kinda late on this, but didn’t expect so many things to be wrong with the promo. Seriously…this is what they were tom-tomming about.
Damn, SRK will be advised not to disown Dulha Mil Gaya just yet.
Atleast DMG looks like an intentionally bad film (which can be fun)…unlike MNIK which surely looks like it’ll be an unintentionally bad film (which is going to be pathetic seeing the cast and crew involved believe that they are making something serious!)
Well, atleast SRK can justify his hamming with this part. I have a feeling though that Aamir’s intending to challenge him on that front as well with whatever little I’m seeing of 3I! Who’d have thought that Salman Khan’s Veer would end up being the best promo out of the 3 Khan releases in the offing!
By the way, are ‘aunties’ supposed to go “Aww…Cho Chweet!” with SRK’s autistic act. Cuz the early parts of the promo seem to sell him as such! Guess we’re gonna see quite a few spots on matrimonial sites asking for ‘autistic’ qualities in prospective grooms!
No offence intended to autistics…all in good fun!
But I’m fairly skeptical of it being a cohesive, good film.
asli Heeray ki pehchan johri hi kar sakta hai..
‘My Name Is Khan’ first look promo is a goose pimple evoking sensation
Sandy, what I read is – there are 5 songs in the movie. Out of which only 3 are in film – that too mostly 2 mins or so and in background.
Ritz: Ya, one would assume so. He can’t be singing romantic duets like ‘Tu jhe de kha to ja na’ kinds.
RKS- I fell of my chair dude! I don’t meant to sound homophobic…but ‘goose pimple evoking sensation’! Can anyone get any gay-er? Man, one should be charged for making anybody laugh this hard!
The MNIK writer’s last “terrorism” film was Fanaa.
Oh boy..
Shivers within…leaving panting for more
Seems like somebody got an orgasm watching the promo!
The most annoying thing is him saying, “My name is Khan”.
I have never heard anyone address themselves by their last name. I wonder when SRK was searched in real life @ the US airport he said to the officer: “My name is Khan”.
If its a case of his Muslim last name, wouldn’t his first name also do the “I am not scared of my name” trick?
This POS is a bigger gimmick than Paa.
LOL@ Abzee.
It seems that the Writing will be the strong point of ‘My Name Is Khan’ and undoubtedly Karan Johar is treading a territory that in all probability will enrich the Indian film industry.
When Hollywood is talking about Avatar enriching the industry this looser is talking about this film?!
No wonder BW films are the laughing stock of the film world…
Abzee, RE: “Seems like somebody got an orgasm watching the promo!”
Someones wallet is getting bigger, more like it…
RKS- I just read the whole thing. Damn, Faridoon has managed to outclass Taran even with his OTT praise. Sample these gems-
“Karan Johar is treading a territory that in all probability will enrich the Indian film industry.”
ROFLOL!
“the look of both Shahrukh and Kajol is different from what we’ve seen them in before.”
Agreed. Not once does SRK ‘look’ straight at Kajol or anyone throughout the promo!
“Kajol’s breakdown scene sends chills down your spine.”
Kaal 2? Personally, just the sight of her sends chills down my spine!
“This may be the turning point in the career of Shahrukh Khan”
This could very well be true. MNIK, coming on the heels of DMG, could really be the turning point in SRK’s career!
>>This POS is a bigger gimmick than Paa
I thot ur ad friend said Paa was an idea and not a gimmick
>>I have never heard anyone address themselves by their last name.
Duh!
My name is Bond..James Bond
Obama…and not Barrack
Bush….and not George
Clooney…and not George
Bradman…and not Donald
which world are you in pal…
Rohit- You’re concerned why he’s addressing himself as Khan…I’m wondering why Kajol calls him Khan as well. Do spouses address each other by their last names? I’ve never heard my dad call out “Iyer!” to my mum or my mum say “Bandekar!” to my dad!
A&B, I stand corrected on all points
>>Someones wallet is getting bigger, more like it…
Absolutely!! But that made for fun reading tho. He has gone so OTT – it enters the realms of spoofs
btw – the way abz is going at karan and srk – seems to me – he is the one close to an orgasm
>>I’ve never heard my dad call out “Iyer!” to my mum or my mum say “Bandekar!” to my dad!
LOL! My wife always calls me Asshole! I shud tell my Dad
Guys, I seriously believe that K-Jo should start promoting MNIK as a comedy…pronto! That way, it’ll atleast have some chance…atleast the audience will think that it’s intentionally crappy!
Abz – how much did u get paid to trash MNIK
I am laughing so much!! 3 Idiots was trying so hard all this while and it couldn’t make me laugh so much.
Beld- I got paid the exact amount that YRF had put aside for the promotion o Rocket Singh!
btw – a slightly more balanced review of the Promo from rediff
“Shah Rukh, as said, is looking sincere and committed, but it’s an easy role to really flub up. As is the director’s.
My Name Is Khan is clearly the kind of film that will either be groundbreaking or groanworthy, and it’s the biggest risk of Karan Johar’s career. We hope it’s the former.”
Maybe i am wrong but if the idea is to whip the media into a craze – this has done it. There have already been 2 reviews of the Promo! LOL!
That is Raja Sen’s review. That line about Kajol’s shriek is the same that he’s posted on Twitter.
“I have never heard anyone address themselves by their last name. I wonder when SRK was searched in real life @ the US airport he said to the officer: “My name is Khan”.
If its a case of his Muslim last name, wouldn’t his first name also do the “I am not scared of my name” trick?”
Agree with Rohit and Abzee. Lekin bhaiyya sirf “Rizwan” bola to ye samaz me nahin aayega na ke wo ek Pathan hai. Pathan hona ye SRK ke liye bahot garv baat hai bhai…
nyk – this is for you
http://www.magnamags.com/index.....ident.html
make it 3 reviews of the promo and counting
ritz – u guys just dont get it. How long do u think it takes for an American to understand the name Rizwan? If SRK had said – ‘My Name is Rizwan’ – they would have asked him to spell it. Then SRK would have to had to say ‘My name is Rizwan – R as in Rubber, i as in Intelligent, Z as in Zoo (or Zooby Dooby), W as in War, A as in Apple and N as in Naachgaana’
Then Kjo’s movie would have been 4 hrs and not 3!
I hear filmamkers in search of additional revenue streams will start charging for promos and all the ensuing entertainment.
LOL AB – that is a Shetty level zinger.
PS. just canceled my Berlin Feb 2010 tickets…
LOL beld bhai – make it R as in Retard.
But why the hell his wife calls him khan?
Rohit- As you said, I don’t wanna be an Indian in Berlin, Germany when MNIK is screened! Why oh why K-Jo? Release your film in the NRI markets, and make your millions…but please don’t disrepute Indian cinema by taking it to such prestigious fests. He’s gonna make it so difficult for future Indian filmmakers to be taken seriously at Berlin, etc!
I don’t think this will be 3 hours. There are no songs.
Btw, Shetty bhai was right when he said that disaster would strike when the MNIK promo came out! This is truly looking like a disaster of epic proportions. They should add a tagline to the title-
MY NAME IS KHAN
Pralay Ki Shuruat!
I(d)I(o)T- The actual length of MNIK is 2 hours…but the pace at which SRK mouths his lines has doubled the length by 50%…so its a 3 hour film now!
By the way, if his ‘name’ is Khan, what is his ’surname’?
That is true Abzee. I can see the brochures already: “At the 4PM showing, we have an emotional terrorism movie by one of India’s best film-makers…”
Ouch.
I hope both of you don’t have to eat humble pie if the film turns out good ?
“By the way, if his ‘name’ is Khan, what is his ’surname’?”
Khandaan.
cmon rohit/abz – u guys are behaving like fahroon shehradiyar’s alter ego!
its one promo and as sandy says u are going to be eating lot of pie – apple pie of course
Lot of things said and i just feel its exhaustion of 911 theme. Why would i as an Indian not relate to a relevant film like Wednesday rather then seeing MNIK and its US theme of Katrina, etc etc harassment.
Its only due to Starcast and Music.
i told sandy, if the film is good i will fly down to mumbai and eat pie with abzee. we will film it and post on NG.
hope both of you don’t have to eat humble pie if the film turns out good ?
Sandy- I’m willing to take that risk!
Beld- You told me to show my funny side every now and then…I’m just having fun yaar. Convenient timing, you bet!
By the way, more than the promo, its these reviews of the promo that are even more hilarious. Sample this from the Stardust review-
Shah Rukh Khan, the King of bollywood who rules the hearts of countless fans through his towering acting in movies, is all set to storm the box office with his superb but seemingly painful performance in Karan Johar’s upcoming magnum opus ‘My Name Is Khan’.
Ahem…’superb but…painful performance’! I’m sure he didn’t mean to say that!
More-
The pain and the dilemma of being subjected to such a humiliating treatment just because he wants to go to Washington to meet the US President, comes clearly through King Khan’s facial expressions.
Aww! He just wants to go meet the US President…how mean and racial! Haven’t we Hindus, at some time or another, gone to meet the US President just like that! Did we face any humiliating treatment? Then why him! Man, this is going to be such a serious film!
Beld- Thansks a lot for the Stardust link. This review is a treasure trove!
Kajol’s painful crying at the maltreatment of Rizwan Khan in the flick is worth a thousand words said.
So both, SRK and Kajol are quite ‘painful’ in this!
And who can forget Shah Rukh Khan’s innocent and desperate pleadings with security agencies that his name was ‘Khan but he was not a terrorist’. He just wanted to meet the US President as he believed that it would help him in reuniting with lady love
Again, haven’t we all done this at some point…meet the US President so that it’ll help us in reuniting with our lady love. Thank God, Obama’s the Prez…with a certain Clinton, you’d have to say bye-bye to your lady love or find her under his desk!
>>Ahem…’superb but…painful performance’
I was in splits when i read this. BTW i am really enjoying this side of you. If it took a KJo and Khan to get this out – it was well worth it
Beld- I’m serious. These two links- they have no right being this funny. More from Stardust-
It seems Karan Johar has tried to showcase the changing behavioral patterns of US securities agencies in the wake of 9/11 New York attack. Shah Rukh Khan’s powerful display of his humiliation in the US just because his name had an Islamic touch, will certainly go a long way in focusing the attention of the world to this unfortunate phenomenon.
‘Behavioral patterns’ of the US Security Agencies! Is he talking about dogs or some other farm animal…I didn’t know one could capture a human’s, let alone an entire organisation’s, ‘behavioral pattern’!
Guys you haven’t noticed how SRK aped Amitabh in MNIK?…..
See Amitabh wanted to go to Rashtrapati Bhawan in Paa…And SRK wanted to go to….
>>with a certain Clinton, you’d have to say bye-bye to your lady love or find her under his desk!
LMAO. oh boy i havent laughed so much in ages!
>>See Amitabh wanted to go to Rashtrapati Bhawan in Paa…And SRK wanted to go to….
rks – u hit the nail in the head. Remember India has a female president and America has/had a male president.
Thank God, Obama’s the Prez…with a certain Clinton, you’d have to say bye-bye to your lady love or find her under his desk!”
hahahahahahahahaha….this thread itself has become a treasure trove of quotable quotes.
>>I guess I’m not a Hindu either, my name just happens to have a ‘Hindu’ touch.
I dont actually care – I am fine with both a Hindu or a Muslim touch – as long as they are ladies – that works
Promo is not bad. Looking forward to some amazing soundtracks here.
India has a female president and America has/had a male president.
You rock Beld! You see SRK’s name just happens to have an Islamic touch…but he wants to meet Obama to actually experience an Islamic ‘touch’!
I’m telling you guys…3I is just a wannabe comedy film, trying very hard to make you laugh. MNIK is the real deal…it is so effortlessly funny!
Btw, I vote for all film promos to be reviewed by Bollywood Hungama and Stardust writers. All in agreement say AYE!
i dont know about all that abz but i know for sure that this movie and especially SRK has Kjo’s touch
Hahahahahahaha What an entertaining thread. Abzee & Beld you both are on fire guyz
Really awesome comments
Chalo guys…Gotta Go! In 2 hours time it’s…AVATAR (that other wannabe film pretending to change cinema as we know it…poor Cameron, he can’t match the ‘enrichening’ that K-Jo’s gonna provide to cinema!)!
This was fun.
Not me Shettybhai.
>>Not me Shettybhai.
sorry rohit – abz and me arent into 3somes
Btw, in the promo just before the words “Until The Day That Changed Everything” flashes on screen (around the 01:05 mark)…is SRK reaching out for Kajol’s ass or his kid’s? For a moment I was like, oh so everything changed the day his wife realized that he’s into…ahem…’ASS’!
Wonderful cameo by Rohit bhai too
While disaster may have struck elsewhere, NG par Litening of some serious people struck!!
Maza aa gaya, Subha kee ek chai se hee pet saaf ho gaya …
baakee office se….
Abzee and Rohit and Beld – wah wah kya Jugalbandhi theee
It took Kjo for Abzee to come out of……
LMAO !!!
Yeh Idiot kee Aamir khan kee post ko kis Idiot ne password protect kar diya and why??
P.S.- even after enetring password it is not opening up???
i smell sabotage by MNIK promotional dept.
RKS kahan ho tum????
Hheeh nice comments here from Abzee and A&B…I see AVATAR in 4 hours
.
Rocky Bhai – I was testing the password feature – unlocked now. You can check.
One can draw some parallels with the terrorism-based movies made recently but indeed,it does seem that srk has risen to his level of competence. He really looks in top form here.
Manoj i wonder when Hrithik will do so, he has 2 releases this year, he needs to take a grip and destroy BO records..forget being choosy.
cticize,
I believe Hrithik has risen as well.Recently it was reported that he delivered a 5 minute long monologue in Guzaarish( a first for him) which moved Bhansali to the extent that he complimented him “You are in Big B’s league”(I hope he was not talking about the BO prowess!)
OMG this thread is getting more and more entertaining and cheesy….LOL Manoj
Just saw the promo. Found ‘ CORNY’ written all over. Very insincere and superficial. Please dont mix terrorism and Bollywood love story and pretend that you are serious. This film for the global audience? You must be joking, Mr Johar!
Qalandar,
Now you have said that you are exasperated with all the post 9/11 victim hood movies.
The last 15 minutes took those mullahs head on and I thought pretty well.
i must confess to a great exasperation with the permanent victimhood peddled by these post-9/11 films (I do not mean to slight the ill treatment of some Muslims post-9/11; but the luridness with which this promo and other films present it make it seem like Germany 1938 — admittedly that’s a high bar, but it’s aggravating when (e.g.) Khuda Ke Liye graphically depicts torture at the hands of the americans, while having nothing to say about the sort of torture that is ROUTINE in (e.g.) Pakistani (or India, or wherever) prisons). Critical thinking has to be about interrogating the status quo and subjecting it to rigorous examination — not in marketing the luxury of permanent self-pity,”
its not only extended to india and pakistani set up but the general condition of minorities in islamic republic where there are deprived of their basic right and thats basically ignored
so whats goes around comes back in this modern world of liberalization where people tend to reciprocate and thats frankly my opinion without being politically correct and due respect to all
ya india has suffered more and has been the worst victim because we hardly learned anything and there is reason why u.s hardly suffered from any major attack after 9/11
“…
Rockstar read this brilliant article by Sudheer Kulkarnee-
Intolerance is a two-way street
Brilliant piece..
Intolerance is a two-way street

I am also exasperated with all the movies where a Muslim character is either a terrorist or accused of terrorism. Looks like 3 Idiots finally has a regular Muslim guy Farhan (Madhavan). I am also exasperated with all the Punjabi movies and movies with Sikh characters.”
BTW, agree with this paragraph — I am exasperated with all of these myself too. Heck My Name is Khan is now ticking two of those boxes at the same time LOL. Maybe I should be happy this is NRI-land: if this film were set in Punjab’s sarson ke khet, my day would have been complete!
Wow.
Looks like Karan has finally moved out of the Raj and Rahul era finally.
This is definately SRK’s best acting after Swades and CDI.
And now wait for new BO records.
BTW- Hello NG mates me back from Kolkata!
“this film were set in Punjab’s sarson ke khet”
I liked “ganne ke khet” in Dev.D
How are you Tango? aap bhee Dada ke ghar gaye they kya ??
rocky – once again – super article da! but i dont agree. we cant just say why complain about us when you are like this. thats just debating for debating sake.
btw this MNIK promo has shaken up bollywood and how one creates ‘buzz’ for movies. I just saw the press conf – gosh – who wouldnt see a movie with the SRK-Kajol pairing yaar. Rocky – screw the DVD dude – Go enjoy it in a theater! (chal mera marketing ab katam
)
Kajol looks ravishing in the black and red sareee!!
Just for record-
I love K3G and KANK !!!!
so may be i will enjoy it in the theatre
Promo is really good and it seems that this may be KING SRK’s best acting till date.
By the way , really amazed to see that some people are making there frustation out in this thread.
P.S :Clear message to frustated people that MNIK will break all Box Office Records and KING SRK will won all Awards next year.
Rocky hai
Nahi yaar pata hota to koshish karte.
I was in a car when the local Kolkata Meeyon FM channel announced that Amir is in Kolkata (though he was supposed to be in Shahabad, Hardoi).
Issme koi shaq nahin kee SRK will buy all the awards next year !!
Tango bhai glad to see you back.
Thanks
But I’ll only be here till 22nd.
it seems that only 3 minute promo shake the mind of KING SRK hater , imagine what will happen to KING haters when MNIK will thrash and shatter all B.O Records worldwide.
ali I think there may be a sense of disappointment in certain camps (wanting a Karanish promo) due to the fact that the promo is not what everyone had imagined. To be honest even I was a tad apprehensive, but not anymore.
I guess the fact that Kurbaan flopped had given everyone a lot of hope but alas
ali bhai, how are you. We SLAVES are not doubting BO or SRK acting here btw. Most of the discussion by the slaves is about the movie…
Anyways..
Welcome back Tango. Hope you had a good trip…And once again, thanks for everything!
hey ritz – NDTV had a good caption now
3 Idiots Promotion campaign is on ‘Auto’ mode
Be positive ritz – as abz has said <8 yr olds cant see Avatar. So 3I it is during the holidays!
btw just saw the promo for Depp’s Alice in Wonderland. Wow!
Welcome back Tango (Abid) Bhai.
Yes i’m fine I(d)I(o)t , but here i’m not criticizing anyone but feel really amazed that people are not ready to give kjo a chance to prove that he is DIRECTING something different from brand KJO.
Abzee please dont embarass me further
As I said, on the contrary I should thank you for my $5
Hey Beld, I hope 3I lives upto expectations…lets see. BTW 3I has 2 suicide scenes.

I dont know what 12A rating means.
It will da – i dont trust Kareena or aamir or raju but I trust madhavan. His movies are always worth a watch
dont tell me that the rating also has a clue in it!
I dont think anyone has doubted the BO prospects of MNIK. In fact, with its content, it will defnitely shatter global BO records of any bwood movie, especially in the Gulf middle-east.
We were all debating the message of the movie. But as I said earlier, the color of money is better than color of blood.
Qalandar,
Thanks for the links.
The music is awesome in the promo, and Kajol looks amazing!
Other than that, the only redeeming factor looks to be SRK’s act (likely)!
I beleive Karan is clearly lowering everyone’s expectation with this promo to nil. and then of course there’s a good chance that people might be surprised!
They could have added the banner at the start.
” BASED ON REAL LIFE EVENTS”
I am so glad, this MNIK bashing completes the cycle that all stars are thrashed and bashed here, which forum can boast of this.
Congrats to Rohit.
I am liking the promo kind of, after few viewings. There seems to be a lot happening, lets see.
Anyways, i am only mostly interested in the Boxoffice performance as usual.
They should delete the first 10-12 secs with the Mother/Child , its of no use.
well…a 3 min promo…and 2 days after…the reactions are extremee as expected..The Core SRK fan base is excited with the promo(Everybody knows here how gigantic his core fan base is)….And negative reactins from all Anti SRK fans(as expected…(Mostly bacchan fans…all other star fans seems to be having no issues with the promo)
Alreday there is huge buzz for the movie with all the electronic and print media lapping up to the story…
This movie will shatter many BO records all over the world (For an indian movie ofcource)
Hi Raj. I do share the same views as yours. After the trailer, the next moment my wife said, a sure shot Super Hit. It looks thrilling.
thanks for the article rocky
good to see you q after a long time hows you
first thing first on khuda kay liye it may be good on some scale on a pakstani set up but the mindstep and general politics was visible to hilt
when u see a pakistani says we( with special emphashis ) built the taj mahal and sing rag kamud and describe it as pakistani classical its hillarious to hilt ( a song in braj which describes the flirtious nature of krishna)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3ChmgW7DqE&feature=related
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v…..eature=fvw
( from past even in bollywood).. similarly as q said many better movies have been presented
when you don’t count ur comind history and manipulates it … similarly this describes the general intolerance of others faith nothing more
on certain section it scores but it was no way a benchmark
who are we if you don’t beleive in any of combined history and neglects the major part of it
on this current scale of 9/11 discrimination and so on its just the bollywood attempt go global and milk some money from untapped market but unfortunately its way over the top and from the look of thing my name is khan looks no different
Rockstar, agreed on your viewpoints. On Nir Bharan Ke, a nostalgic song from childhood, another link when it was presented in bwood:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.....eature=fvw
Rockstar, notice also, that when bwood presented this song in the movie on Krishna, Radha was played by Zarina Wahab. What more cultural integration does Pakistan want to see?
I myself have mentioned umpteen times here that if there is a LOTR scale movie made on Mahabharat, the best actor in my mind who can play Krishna is SRK. He has all the complete package to essay that role. Yet, people will call me SRK-hater.
rockstar,
“when u see a pakistani says we( with special emphashis ) built the taj mahal and sing rag kamud and describe it as pakistani classical its hillarious to hilt ( a song in braj which describes the flirtious nature of krishna)”
Some Indians may feel that this and an other scene in the prison which mentions Kashmir as jingoistic but can be excused as it is a Pakistani movie and Indian movies have had worse jingoistic scenes than these.”

Hey Shiva,
How r u doing??

Nykavi,
I believe you are making assumptions which may not be true…SRK or KJo never claimed that they are making anything “International” or “”Premium offering”"”…They only said they are trying to open up Indian movies to as much markets as possible…(Why not ?)Now these are clearly two different things…

THis is absolutely right..But why blame KJo alone..???
Secondly is movie making is all about showing idian culture alone ??? Yes Martial arts is chinese USP but who the hell watch a chinese movie if every movie deals with that aspect….
On a slightly related note…the Dean headly case is getting murkier day by day…Its quite evident that Headly was a former DEA agent(As Various media reports have suggested) and also might be a CIA agent who went rogue….
