looks like a heavy mix of the anti-imperealism of mangal pandey, lagaan … with battle scenes reminiscent of JA and Sallu in a gladiator get-up in proper BW masala format.
Sallu looks good in the action scenes, not so impressive otherwise … mixed feeling on the promo. Maybe Salman shud have done this when he was a lot younger.
I think that should have been the factor with Wanted as well but what i like about the promo is there’s the raw action feel with great visuals that will impress the audience, If Anil Sharma has the dialogues and jingoism i guess this will work. Thats why the huge billboard like “From the Director of GADAR”, they want to kick gut of that audience again and bring them back to Mplexes which Sallu hasnt brought even in Wanted.
aside, this movie will be dificult to sell to the plexes … though a wanted kind of single response cannot be entirely ruled out. this director seems to be stuck in his gadar world, even after 10 years … had they gone for a slicker movie instead of the OTT masala format – this movie might have worked in plexes.
wish they had made it in tamil or telegu – they wud have done great business.
Yeh Trailer to bilkul Phaaaduuuu dikhta hai! Fulltoo Combo of Conan + Kranti + Lagaan!
Pehli baar kisi ne salman ki physique ka asli istimaal kiya hai. He was always suited to play such a role, its taken 20yrs to appear in one! Hope this movie rocks.
The glossy looks, heavy gladiator/troy/etc inspired action especially renditioned by the first gymboy of bwood, presence of Kats, all the regular anti-angrez content will be enough to propel this movie hugely. Multiplex people are essentially hindustani, but those that want to see superior gloss. MP failed in that dept, as did Asoka, and JA underperformed because of lack of action despite having HR. This movie seems to have enough action with those battle sequences to satisfy the apetite of true action lovers. I wouldnt be surprised if its a huge hit, with the caveat that it needs to pack enough content to keep people interested for 2 hrs.
Jan 22nd! So now we have another biggie in the midst of 3i and MNIK to look forward to.
Almost Universal Bash free comments for Veer Promo.
I have visited a few other forums and the verdict on the Promo is clear, its been mostly liked, hopefully the right steps will be taken from now onwards to make it some kind of success, which is a great challenge.
The promo is just silly. I don’t know what majority of you are talking about. What I am impressed by is Salman Khan in a masala-driven role in a period piece. He does look like he is in major form, so for that this movie is definitely going to strike a balance with Indians back home. Not expecting much from this movie
Anil Sharma isn’t a good story teller, let alone a good director.
The promo appears silly as its formatted to be a crowd pleaser … any bollywood masala entertainer appears silly be it wanted or ghajini or this.
This trailer reminds me of the Blue one where the SFX and action took the limelight … but we know what happened there … the 80 cr movie blue cud not even nett 40 cr at the box office. Wonder what the budget here is. Likely to be in the range 65-70 cr including P&A if i am not mistaken.
Salman can carry off the costumes which i think have excited his fans … but the expressions are weird in the action scenes and also otherwise he looks really bad … actually looks funny.
even if i forget Sharma’s lack of story-telling and direction capacities – this promo itself reveals the really bad supporting cast of a bloated mithun, jackie, sohail and that aladin-movie actress.
the dialogues are pathetic – dubbing or no dubbing and the romantic portions of the trailer are just too poor to be fair … ghajini had scored very well in the dept.
An off the shelf comparison with JA will reveal the Gravity of the situation.(Direct comparison is not fair,as JA was not essentially a masala movie, but anyways).
Hrithik(after D2 and Krissh) > Salman
Gowarikar > Anil Sharma
Aish > New Heroine
Budget is pretty much same considering inflation and market expansion.JA was one of the highest budgets at its time, similar to Veer.
So JA wins on all fronts, and even then JA got just about decent opening followed by great trending ofcourse and thus a hit verdict.
The road ahead is very steep,JA was able to reach its destination, lets see if Veer can first reach the dock, destination is for later.
One thing i wud agree with Doga is both JA and Veer are big budget movies – the budget+P&A amount was 50 cr for JA 2 years back … now the wud amount to 65-70 cr for Veer.
But considering the kind of movies attempted, even a 70 cr nett for Veer wud not match up to JA’s 59 cr haul 2 years back … infact such massy attempts like Veer will not only re-establish the quality and richness of JA … but also re-establish what JA did at BO.
If Veer indeed does 100 cr at BO, then it wud surely be a big achievement … as on BO terms Veer has same stake as a RNBDJ or Ghajini.
Actually before JA came out, i was expecting Hrithik to attempt something like Veer when he signed an epic movie … had that been the case then my predictions of JA doing 100 cr wud have come true … but whether salman can pull it off with his Veer remains to be seen.
Also JA in today’s terms wud have opened close to 30 cr, can Salman open Veer to something substancially more? Going by Wanted’s 32 cr opening, i wud be surprised if it does.
If I am not wrong, Veer materialized after JA worked … when a slow paced 3.5 hr long historical epic cud turn out to be a hit without the eye-popping war scenes or the normal BW stunts … then a more massy format has more potential to be a bigger money-spinner … hopefully Veer will go the Race way in riding on the Dhoom 2 wave rather than turning out to be a cash, luck or a blue.
I am a sucker of the genre salman is attempting here, so wud surely want this to work … but we have also seen the SFX disasters that happened after Krrish – starting from Drona to Love Story 2050 to the recent Aladin.
This is huge.. much more than I had expected. And if Anil Sharma sticks to his strengths we’ll see a blockuster come Jan
Salman seems to fill the void created by Sunny’s departure. Sunny, after Salman and SrK, delivered the most hits in the 90’s and all his hits were these raw actioners and he was actually very consistent at it. And anytime any of those “mindless” actioners had a decet screenplay they ended up huge grossers… Ghayal, border, Gadar etc. Salman will be doing himself much good if he does more and more of actio and less ad less of comedy.
yea single screens or should I say the “interiors” is the audience he should target. This is the audience that loves action and there’s no one providing them with it. Even otherwise, there’s no action star right now.. and bollywood, like any other movie industry, needs an action star. In the 90’s there was not only Sunny, but the likes of Akshay, bobby deol and Sunil Shetty delivered actioners on a regular basis. but now, Sunny is done and gone, so is bobby, Akshay is doig more and more of comedy.. and the top 3 dont wanna be typecasted in anything, While Aamir and SrK hardly do actioners, even Hrithik delivers one every 3 to 4 years.
It’s the same reason why Ranir is being lapped.. There’s no loverboy/romantic hero now that not only Srk, Aamir, Salman have got too old to play romantic leads but even Hrithik is not really doing any romantic movies either.
the reason why those actioners are no longer being made for interiors is that they dont make much money in single screens … wanted worked very well yet the end gross was not much … even an actioners like Veer needs good money to make … unless producers are sure they can attract the plex, they will not invest … and when try try to cater to the sensibilities of plex, they end up with a product that is not exactly what will excite the interiors most.
