Hrithik Roshan will be playing Aurangzeb in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s next.

Hrithik Roshan is becoming the costume drama mascot of Bollywood. After playing Akbar in Ashutosh Gowarikar’s Jodha Akbar, Hrithik will now be seen playing the character of the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s next.

A source reveals, “Sanjay Leela Bhansali has penned down an epic script based on the life of the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. Hrithik heard the script and liked it very much. Known to get in the skin of the character, he will be undergoing training for the role in this film, in order to get in shape and have a persona of the great emperor Aurangzeb.”

“In real life, Aurangzeb played a negative character. But in the film, Bhansali will portray the positive side of Aurangzeb.”

The source continues, “After the post-production of Guzaarish, Bhansali will start working on the pre-production of this epic film. It is a big budget film of around Rs 60-70 crore.”

“Talks were on with Fox Star Studio and it seems Bhansali has cracked the deal.”

When quizzed, Vivek Krishnani, head of distribution, Marketing and Syndication at Fox Star Studio said, “These all are speculations and we would not want to comment.”

“We have our company policy to announce everything in a particular manner.” Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s spokesperson said, “It is not true”.

How ever the source maintains, “The pre-production will start April next year, after Bhansali finishes major portions of Guzaarish, but the movie will go on floors, late next year somewhere in November.”

“It is not only a big budget film but also requires a lot of research, location hunting being an epic film.”

A positive Aurangzeb! God knows what positives Bhansali will conjure up. After the historical flaglellation in JA, bwood sure seems to be on a path to revise history in every way. Looks like Bhansali has not gotten off the bhai-financing bandwagon. Or maybe its Saudi financing.

As for HR, he should also find a couple of directors to cast him as Jahangir and Shahjahan. Then he will have rounded up the Mughal dynasty in his distinct profile.

Maybe Bhansali will explain away the quartering of Sambhaji (Aurangzeb had him cut up into pieces which were fed to river crocs) to the Marathas as a historical inaccuracy. Or the imposition of Jaziya as a righteous tax that every god fearing Hindu would need to pay, in case they wanted to visit their gods. Or the countless other brutalities imposed in 50 years of continuous murderous reign.

Hrithik seems to be on a mission to sign up films now … Zoya’s next from april, Krrish 2 being talked about to start shooting from september, now Bhansali’s next rolling from the year end … there is already one movie with Bharadwaj lined up after he is done with seven … and a agneepath remake with Kjo … finally the dormant volcano is ready to erupt.

Whether these films will live upto their expectations remains to be seen … but undoubtedly he seems geared up for a new phase of his career. Kites is doing everything possible to tap into the market outside of bollywood films with the english version – the move is highly risky and may not yeild good dividends – but since its the first time this is happening, even if the english version gets decent collections, it will be smething to reckon with. Now if the english version does not work, still the hindi version of 2 hrs shud be able to rake in the required moolah to make Kites a hit – considering its hrithik with his dance-stunt-style package after quite sometime.

Guzarish – it seems more risky to me with Bhansali coming after the disastrous Saawariya, and moreover a melodramatic take on a sensitive topic can be disastrous – even with his dream cast.

But even if these two movies dont work, he will have a quick follow-up with Zoya’s yuppie plex movie and then Rakesh Roshan’s Krrish 2 … and even if these fail he still has movies with Bhansali and Bharadwaj lined up …. never before did he have such a line-up with all sorts of genres and more importantly with directors who are expected to deliver more than the rest.

The next 2-3 years will be hrithik’s best chance to take over from SRK-Aamir … something he was expected to do after the KNPH wave but failed due to lack of follow-up movies.

Now that he has 4-5 solid grosses in his belt, he is not only getting the banners, but also attracting the better lot of directors and supposedly better scripts. He cant possibly ask for anything more to reach his true potential … if he fails to optimise from this, he has no excuse. period.

Making an analogy with hrithik’s achievements this decade, he hasnt fared any less than SRK or Aamir in 90s. Aamir had just 5 clean hits in the 90s – Dil, HHRPK, RH, Rangeela and Ishq … out of which only Dil and RH were big grosses. SRK had 8 hits in that period – Deewana, Darr, Bazigar, DDLJ, karan arjun, DTPH, KKHH, pardes … out of which DDLJ,DTPH,KKHH were big grosses. Hrithik had 6 hits till now – KNPH, K3G, KMG, Krrish, D2, jodhaa akbar … out of which KNPH, K3G, KMG, Krrish and D2 were big grosses and except K3G rest were only dependent on him for the end total. Talking about flops, srk/aamir both had many more than hrithik.

It will be interesting see how he fares in the coming decade with respect to SRK/Aamir in this decade. This is purely based on the fact that SRK/Aamir were quite old in the industry when Hrithik arrived … and even if one compare him head to head with SRK/aamir in the last 10 years – he doesnt come out too bad either.

Nykavi – positives toh mil hi jayega … if you are ready to ignore the negatives! Considering the maturity of bollywood itself, i wont break my head over historical accuracies – neither does hollywood even with its vastly improved technology and production.

Comon, you had no issues with a 6-ft bachchan playing a progeria patient (remember the debate?) … now you are concerned about showing Aurengzeb in a positive light?

but given a choice i wud like to see hrithik play all the negatives of aurengzeb – that wud be far more interesting to me at least if not the general masses.

btw, this project may be Bhansali’s revenge for not able to make his baaji rao mastani with salman and ash and later supposedly with all the 3-4 bachchans!

Hrithik had already made it very clear that he would not do any more historicals after JA(though it brought him tremendous appreciation) to avoid repetition of any sort.So this project looks unlikely.

    Hello Ach!

    Good analysis from you.

Though Aurangzeb has been delineated as a very ruthless emperor in all Indian history textbooks, there were some positives to his life as well which were totally unnoticed.
For instance,Aurangzeb never drew a single penny from the state treasury. He used to earn his livelihood by selling caps.He hated luxury of any sort.

Manoj: that might be true, but those are personal virtues — and do not really make up for political vices.

Aurangzeb was an ahole of the first order and anyone making a film on him of any kind needs to be lynched.

“He is supposed to have said ‘Sava lakh se ek ladaoon’ (meaning each brave must fight more than a lakh oppressor), ‘Chidiyon se main baaz ladaoon’ (I’ll make the sparrow fight the falcon).

The first of all these writings are not by any Guru in specific. They are either written by their beloved at that time (maybe Bhai Gurdasji) or were written after them. Also, these writings are not part of Guru Granth Sahib. These phrases were to inspire his followers to fight the cruel and oppressive techniques of Mughal emperors and in particular Aurangzeb.”

Aurengzeb was likely to be the biggest ahole among all the aholic Mughals … but a movie on him is likely to be about the story of his succession to the throne instead of his reign as an emperor (which was hardly cinematic in any sense) – the way Aurengzeb came to the throne is itself the ideal combo of drama, action and betreyal that is apt for any commercial movie format – and considering its dear old bw, they will have some all-consuming love angle which is add further spice to the proceedings.

Manoj – to the contrary what hrithik may have said after JA and its delays, he is likely to sign up for this if this project materialises after all … he had already put the effort on Urdu diction, has been trained on swordfighting and horseriding and other similar stuffs … also considering Krrish sequel is on the cards he is likely to get back in shape from the recent debauch look once guzarish shooting is over. Playing a warrior prince role of Aurengzb wud hardly need so much effort this time around.

Also the way he has learned to juggle Kites post-production along with Guzarish shooting – i wont be surprised if he shoots for this movie when Krrish 2 is in post-production. Also its high time he realises that is the only way he can have multiple releases every year.
