Seriously, anyone expected Kurbaan to be a good movie? All promos suggested this fake-thriller-in-the-making. There is nothing genuine about it. Kareena in all her interviews talks about how everyone felt so cold shooting in new york in winter days. well duh. ask her or any people associated with this crap (Including director – Rensil or Karan Johar) on terrorism, their answers are muttered and confused up.
Do they not watch Hollywood terrorism movies? Even Hollywood’s crap thrillers have better value than what Rensil puts up on screen. movies like Yash Raj’s New York, or Kurbaan are seriously a joke to some serious subjects like this.
Unbelievable

“Bollywood has long way to go….
Even Hollywood’s crap thrillers have better value than what Rensil puts up on screen”
MrCool, with all due respect to your opinion, I think you are underestimating bollywood and such comparison is irrelevant here. I havent seen Kurbaan and I am not justifying anything for THAT movie. Bollywood is not YRF and KJo.
I admit I am uneducated as far as HW is concerned, but IMHO we have better stories than a giant monkey falling in love Or america saving the world every year.
And we have people like Gulzar who are very much capable of handling films sensitive issues – just an example.
I am sure Hollywood has far bigger jokes than Kurbaan, and they become biggest grossers year after year.

Hollywood does produce a lot of crapsters every year, have seen my share of it.
Havent seen Kurbaan but am hearing similar feelings to the above.

I don’t think it’s irrelevant. For one, Terrorism is not affected in one nation, but throughout the world. Two, Hollywood post 9/11 has churned out countless movies under such subject but with a lot of details.
What really is irrelevant is to compare non-specific genre of movies-against-movies. So with giant monkey falling in love would be a thought that does not cater to a serious issue.
This is a gimmick and an excuse to produce a movie for profit, all in the name of a serious subject as terrorism. What’s really interesting is that America is not the only nation to suffer and fight terrorism, but they are capable of producing a movie with a lot of thought process and common sense of countries the movies set as the backdrop. Ask Rensil or Karan Johar, how America works and what security measure people take against the word terrorism. The way logic (or lack of) flows in Kurbaan seriously makes you want to beat the heck out of the director/producer. This is a serious subject. The posters suggested to me as if it was some soft-porn, then there were these fake-promos with every actor showcasing their depressing expression – all in the name of acting, of course. This is not real.
It’s been over 10 years, and we have not seen another Maachis. You mention Gulzar, but such greatness is rare and such filmmakers don’t even make a realistic-commercial cinema. There is nothing wrong if a serious issue is tackled in commercial format, but don’t make a joke of it either.
Sure Hollywood has its share of ridiculous stuff, and they become successful (Paranormal Activity etc), but at least it doesn’t pretend to be something great in the first place.

MrCool, agree with you on most of the points here. But such HW movies “not pretending to be great in the first place” is not true – at least to the world outside of America.

But then I also maintain that western cultures are better at understanding movies than they are in the east (and that includes Bollywood)
How else can one expect such an excuse for a movie and some critics actually lapping it up. On top of this, you will see this Kurbaan at Award nominations. It’s a sad sad sad mindset.
Till people start and rejecting such films, it’s likely that filmmakers in India will continue to take audience for granted. Although things are changing, they are also not changing so drastically. I haven’t seen one greatness of a movie this year to be honest. Not even Kaminey. That one is also a huge disaster

You will see one great movie this year soon ..3Idiots
Aside – I am not at all pissed off at Bollywood the way you are because I know what to expect from Bollywood. For serious and mature stuff there are always regional films.

aaah. ha. lol
I shall keep my opinions on 3I to myself at this moment or in this thread at least
Even on the quality of regional films, there is little to admire this particular year. I guess everyone is on a break. What I really want to see is a realistic-commercial format on serious issues. There needs to be better screen-writing/scripts and a director who is willing to do his research before producing him/her self or with a studio.
But my anger towards Bollywood might just disappear next year. There is massive amount of movies I actually am looking forward to. And I don’t have much praises for Hollywood this year either.
