A die-hard fan of playback singer Geeta Dutt ji.

Dev Anand and Shakeela

Guru Dutt produced the film CID in the year 1956 which was directed by his assistant Raj Khosla (debut as director). Dev Anand and Shakila were the leading stars of the film. The music was provided by Rhythmking O P Nayyar and veteran Majrooh Sultanpuri penned the lyrics. Almost all the songs of the film were runaway success. “Aye dil hain mushkil” and “Aankhon hi aankhon mein ishaara ho gaya” (both Rafi, Geeta), “Le ke pehla pehla pyaar” (Rafi, Shamshad), “Kahin pe nigahen kahi pe nishana”, “Boojh mera kya naav re” (both Shamshad) were chartbusters. Among these, one song was deleted by the censors who objected to the word “Fiffi”. The song was deleted from the film but still continues to enthrall the music lovers till date.

The song is none other than “Jaata kahan hain deewane, sab kuchh yahaan hain sanam” sung effortlessly and seductively by Geeta Dutt.

Lyrics:

Film – C.I.D 1956
MD – O.P.Nayyar
Lyricist – Jaan Nisaar Akhtar
Singer(s) – Geeta Dutt

Jaata Kahan Hai Deewane, Sab Kuchh Yahan Hai Sanam
Baaki Ke Saare Fasaane, Jhoothe Hain Teri Kasam
Fifty, Kuchh Tere Dil Mein Fifty, Kuchh Mere Dil Mein Fifty
Zamaana Hai Bura….

Pehlu Badalne Lage, Ghabra Ke Chalne Lage
Aankhein Mili Bhi Nahin, Yoon Hi Sambhalne Lage
Aji Suniye Huzoor, Jaana Humse Na Door
Aji Suniye Huzoor
Dekho Dil Hai Kisi Ka Jalaana Bura
Jaata Kahan Hai Deewane, Sab Kuchh Yahan Hai Sanam
Baaki Ke Saare Fasaane, Jhoothe Hain Teri Kasam
Fifty, Kuchh Tere Dil Mein Fifty, Kuchh Mere Dil Mein Fifty
Zamaana Hai Bura….

Saiyyad Hai Tu Magar, Mujhko Na Yoon Tan Ke Dekh
Nadaan Zara Ek Baar, Qaidi Mera Ban Ke Dekh
Maano Maano Meri Baat, Hai Yeh Pehli Mulaqaat
Maano Maano Meri Baat
Dekho Pehlu Se Uth Ke Jaana Hai Bura
Jaata Kahan Hai Deewane, Sab Kuchh Yahan Hai Sanam
Baaki Ke Saare Fasaane, Jhoothe Hain Teri Kasam
Fifty, Kuchh Tere Dil Mein Fifty, Kuchh Mere Dil Mein Fifty

Zamanaa hai burra…

The friendship between Dev Anand and Guru Dutt led to reciprocal efforts in Baazi and CID. I love all the songs of CID, and the film too.

Thanks pardesi for bringing out this angle.

The detailed story is like this:

Dev Anand and Guru Dutt were struggling friends in Prabhat films, Pune. They made a pact that whoever gets a chance will help the other. Dev Anand became producer with Baazi and gave the direction to Guru Dutt. It made history with the film and its hit music becoming a big box office draw. Strangely Guru Dutt did not keep his part of the promise and did not direct Dev Anand in any film. CID was only produced by Guru Dutt but directed by his assistant Raj Khosla.

Yes, but Raj Khosla did pretty well by Dev, and the film introduced Waheeda – so that was an added bonus.

Well, you are right but I intentionally did not mention the other actress (due to obvious reasons).

The issue is not if Raj Khosla did a good job or not, the issue is that Guru Dutt did not keep his part of the promise. He never actually produce and direct a film for Dev Anand. Jaal was produced by Film Arts and not by Guru Dutt films.

Why? Do you, as in you personally, have something against Waheeda as an artist?

Yes of course, she was partly responsible for making the life and career of Geeta Dutt ji into hell.

Hmm – since you have obviously researched the life of Geeta Dutt, I ask you, was she more to blame than Guru Dutt himself?

I completely agree with you that the major reason for Geeta’s personal and professional problems was her “Patidev”. It is a bitter truth which the fans of the legendary film-maker find hard to digest.
