Not sure this is the right way to go about the promos. I’m sure the film is a dark comedy of sorts so to promote it like an Akki comedy will actually dissuade a lot of people IMO. Aamir-Hirani spell class and that is what their audience expects.
This is just a lot of juvenile stuff happening, which by itself is okay. Except that a 44 year old Aamir in such a part doesn’t cut it at all. Also, my own belief is that Aamir is just not very natural with comedy.

I somehow concur with Sandhya, I liked the first trailer a lot, but too much of toilet in this one.
I still won;t call it Akki humor, but it seems to me that its focused on college going youth, and they will like this.
And the content is very relevant in today’s world, so even their parents will lap it up.
And I will assume that its just one off song, a fun masti kinds.

You know filmmakers have this misconception that scatalogical/toilet humour always evokes laughter. That’s not true, esp not with families. I think most would find it plain tasteless. It spoils a good film for me honestly.

Coming back to 3I, that first promo makes me believe this will be a huge entertainer, but this kind of stuff above is just making the film look trivial. I think they need to bring in some of the serious stuff. There is a lot of that in the film hopefully. Tht’s what I’m looking for. I do not want RDB – pre interval again.

I-D-I-O-T: I do believe the 2 Munnabhai’s were dark comedies. Yes, they were very entertaining, but they tackled serious issues.

One just has to watch RDB to see who is generous over what?! He certainly doesn’t mind sharing screen space with his comrades and like RDB this is evident in 3I! All 3 are supremely talented actors, and in some ways the underdogs of Bollywood (Sharman and Madhavan), then you have Aamir, who isn’t an “underdog” as such anymore, though his favourite onscreen persona from the likes of JJWS, RDB and LAGAAN have been that!

Akshay: I’m not sure one is looking for a massive grosser here – it could earn a lot. But I think primarily everyone – whether Aamir fans or not – would like to see a good film I would think.
He already proved his BO might with Ghajini. I mean no one has come anywhere close to that film yet. So now, he would need a prestige hit, no doubt about it. And Hirani IS the man. Look at Lago Raho.. he beautifully blends mass with class.

Right now, it is an eye sore to see the men act like 20 year old, which is why I seriously think the next few promos should bring in the mature stuff.

I said it before and say it again. If Akki did this then we would be calling it more cheese and puerile stuff, when Aamir does it we search for class even in the crass!!! If SRK did it, he would come for much more flak, the relevance of SRK posts 1-10 would be written (although that may have been a past phenomenon), and jokes made about him covered in foam among so many other guys or sharing a box with two other guys!

Maybe Hirani and VVC and the cast were still in the phase of SIK and Welcome working hugely with audiences when this film was planned. Aamir is always forced in humor, but he has a strong cast to support him so All May Be Well. But IMHO Munnabhai was not this puerile. It was more simplistic though, and I hope Hirani will show us simple and not simplistic in this one.

Folks…all this talk about Aamir at the ‘center’ of everything is puzzling. No one said this when RDB released. As for DCH, Farhan narrated the movie to Aamir and gave him a choice. He obviousl picked the one which had the most screen time. If he had given the same choice to Saif or Akshay, they would have done the exact same thing.

I don’t think I remember much of what use to happen at college but hostel was fun with so many incidences(nude holi, Gaali competition between wings during load-shedding, almost no sleep during exams, night chai outings, playing cricket in aisle…).

Caulfield, if this film did not star Aamir then it would not be sold for upward of 60 cr and come with huge expectations. So I think the director has made sure his BO draw is front and center. That and the promos tell us what the tone of the film will be. But then HIrani is NOT subtle, even though he is very effective. I see nothing wrong with having Aamir as the centerpiece of the triumvirate.

After watching the scene with Aamir, Sharman and Maddy inside the classroom, I realized that Aamir is indeed the tutor of Darsheel in TZP. He has got the mannerisms of a 8 year old perfectly.

I think the potty shots are required to show authentic college life. Plus I am sure they will also bring in the noble cause of highlighting the cheap bathing arrangements in colleges today in spite of heavy fees for facilities.

I am sure this promo is not an indication of how the film will be. The film MUST have something more. Because Hirani and Aamir SHOULD be relied upon to created something better than “3 stooges with mental devlopment of 8 year olds”.

What will it take for VVC to get a decent soundtrack going? Even that production house’s love stories like Kareeb and Parineeta had a snoozefest of a soundtrack. I can’t think of a VVC song I have liked except for “Tum se Mil Ke” (Parinda) and “Kuch Na Kaho” (1942)…

This promo was ok, but has a hangover from other college films; nothing new here.

Though what caulfield is talking about is more in the nature of framing of shots. It is hardly coincidental that Aamir is in the center of the three in EVERY shot (but one). That is simply not natural in a friendship between three people, but if Hirani chooses to frame his shots that way then that is how it is.

What I do not understand is how any of this has turned into Aamir and anti-Aamir. It is a mere discussion on a promo of a hugely awaited film. It is another thing that fans are generally less critical than the general public.

I loved songs of ‘1942 A love story’. Kareeb is the last good album of Anu Malik and even Mission Kashmir has some great numbers.

Its Hirani’s music sense that is reflected in this one. VVC always goes for slow melodious numbers. Hirani goes for very Indian tunes with massy touches, which fitted Munnabhai series perfectly. And the same shows in this.

Sandhya, I think you are reading too much in 40s stars playing college guys. I guess you are watching as a critic, which is ok, but this is not how I think audience watch movies. I think all audience care for is entertainment, and if the movie is entertaining enough, they will see it. DCH had no problems with Aamir playing college dude, neither 3 I will have any such problem. Audience dont even care about Aamir beating 20 people just by his 8 packs (Is it even possible to have 8 packs BTW?) neither do they care about Suri not being recognized by Taani. All they care about is if movie entertains them, and if they can feel for the characters. And my humble request to all reviewers will be to keep that in mind only.

I totally agree with Akshay and RKS that this song very much reminds me of my college days, though I was a day scholar, but this madhouse is veru much like what I heard and witnessed in hostels. From dancing on traffic signals, to actually begging just to buy a samosa, what all have we not done?

And I don’t even see a mid life crisis in actors trying to portray 20 year olds. What can we all not do to get back in time?

Liek they say, if I get my wasted days back, will I use them to get back on track? FUCK NO

3 I is actually growing on me, I still do not like this trailer much, not too copacetic, but I bet I will like the movie.

I think promos can prove to be very decpetive, so yes Kunal, I don;’t want to read too much into it.

But just to note, the comments here are getting very predictable. One can look at an avatar and guess what they’re going to say – that I feel totally takes away the charm out of a site. Displaying good faith is very important in a discussion.
In all this, some comments by certain members are of course par for the course, but I find CAULFIELD’s comments especially silly and unnecessarily restenful. Don’t think we need that sort of stuff. What do you mean about Aamir being ungenerous? He’s obvious the lead star – DCH got sold on his name! The makers would be foolish not to give him maximum screen time.
As for RDB – it was brave to give Siddharth the climax.
I personally would not even dignify such comments with a response. And am surprised some members did reply to this!

PS: Saw APKGK – lovely film, doesn’t evoke an emotional response but a great date movie nevertheless!

I don’t think anyone doubts much that 3 Idiots would be a good film – this song is a very small snippet of a film that I believe runs deeper.

Let me also say that Hrithik is incapable of doing comedy films like 3 idiot. The last one he did was in Main Prem ki pareshani hoon. Man what a masterpiece. I wonder where are his fans now. Or is Raka the famous one who is back now with his usual antics. Man this guy has been after Aamir, Akshay and Ranbir for long. He needs a break, though not as long as what Hrithik is taking.

I am eagerly waiting for the magnum opus International 120Cr budgeted sex comedy – KITES. Just hope that Rocket Singh does not cut the Kite on his way to the top. BTW, this promo has really gone OTT in catching your attention. I know it connects with engineering students in India but it’s a little different from what we had thought it would be. Aagey dekhtein hain kya hai iss 3i mein. I am expecting a comical duet between Aamir and Kareena next.

I think the makers were able to capture few things in the bathroom because they stayed at IIMB and shot the film there.

I do not know what has happenned post Kal Ho na ho, but we male friends have suddenly become cautious to good friendship bonding. The reason for caution is quite understandable. look at some of the comments here- if two friends in engineering college are dancing in shared bathroom, how does it become gay act?
Man, i think people have not shared accomodation with friends, otherwise, they will understand what friendship masti between males are all about.
I do not know why the sexual aspect, now famously termed as gay act, came from and dampened the spirit. Karan Johar is responsible for senationalising it with Dostana. Now two friends cannot put arms around each other and walk. It will be called Dostana. I remember we used to be told that this gensture between two males is unacceptable in western world and we used to laugh as it was so common and unpretentious in India. Unfortunately in aping the culture and education of west, we have also aped that thoughts between two male friends and has completely ruined the male bonding. Those who understand male friendship will know what i am telling.

But there are silent members who probably don’t like that comment and are quiet because there is nothing personal. But IMO mods have duty vis-a-vis NG betterment. I understand few members are right when they question coolp about authority as tech mod. But I think his actions were for NG betterment.

Very true, Rks, I think anything with an intent of betterment of NG should be welcomed. Now, we may or may not agree with it, or it might even don;t make NG any better (not talking about this instance, but in general), but if the intent is to make Ng a better place, we can thank atleast.

And one more thing, which may be I should not say, but I will, being an ass I am, I didn’t like Doga commenting on CoolP like this. If 2 mods are having a discrepancy, I think it will be a better idea to keep it in personal emails, and solve these issues there, don’t spill it in public. Anyways, my opinion, not necessarily right.

You are seriously misguided by foolish theories of absurd individuals. The other day I read very ridiculous statement from you know where SRK had been affected by Akshay Kumar’s movies like Blue, KI opening well in the recent past. On the contrary, its the Prestige theory and the hype abouy Ghajini’s opening that has been affected.

Heck, even Akshay kumar movie after audience disappointments and critical disasters like CCTC/KI can open well. So what the hell is prestige of Ghajini and the apparent greatness. Its amazing that sometimes that people fail to think.

My point in this entire discussions, is how the Prestige theory followers here see a massy promo of 3I and make super stupid discussions about how the movie MUST be something more and blah blah … rather than accepting that this is just gonna be a fun movie.

By the very quality of the promos one can understand that this is not gonna have great authenticity or nonsense causes being endorsed. If it has, its not gonna do a 113 crore. This will mainly be a FUN film with as much quality one can expect from Munnabhai maker.

The audience goes for anything that appears interesting. Anything that has the promise of entertainment. A trailor of Ranbir and Katrina in APKGK promises that. Hence the great opening. The hype around the bugdet of Blue promises that hence the opening. This movie will open well. No toilet humour, bathroom scenes can stop it. Akshay Kumar is the proof for it.

Apart from that there is the concept of a star associated with a genre that attracts audience. We have Salman, SRK, Hrithik — being the real stars with loyal, crazy, dedicated fans. I don’t see Aamir anywhere in this. Aamir Khan needs to be associated with a good movie to attract the audience.

And the people who write blogs about cult classics, quality movies, history of cinema etc contribute very less to success of movies. Akshay Kumar is again proof for that.

Yes, the pressure is building up. Because I genuinely want to see what 3I is all about. Hirani’s movies in spite of the sweetened characters and little overdone sentimentalism, manages to endear with its simplicity. Not a big fan of his style. But I hope he’d try a different approach in this one. I am definitely more excited about this one that Karan’s wannabe ’serious’ film about terrorism, autism and what not.

Bash: The first Rang De Basanti promos also were only about college-y antics, they did not at all suggest the turn that film took. So, while it is possible that 3 Idiots is only going to be a fun, dumb film, the fact that the first promo is that way hardly settles the issue.
