kaminey Sheeru’s Review of KAMINEY (Hindi, 2009)

Dhan Te Nan…nanana. Come on everybody…chant with me…Dhan Te Nan…nanana lol. Vishal Bhardawaj as we all know is a supreme film-maker. What I love about his films is that he works so hard on each and every character. He makes sure that every character in his picture stands out. His characters are well sketched and fit into the film’s storyline perfectly. Kaminey will be remembered for it’s characters. From the loud-mouth, rebellious Sweety to the psychotic, coke sniffing Mikhail. From the scary, random, angrezi speaking Tashi to off the charts, ill-mannered, goofy looking Bhope. they all leave a mark. Not to forget the two main characters of this film, Charlie and Guddu. Vishal makes these two characters so different, one a hakkla and the other a tothla lol. By now you must all be thinking, what in the world is going on. What kind of odd-ball characters has Vishal created??? All I can say is, by the end of this movie you don’t take home the storyline of the film. You take home the well written characters and the performances of these astonishing actors who bring life into these characters. I am very proud of Shahid Kapur. He’s the boy next door covered with chocolate. You would never expect him to do a role like this. But he has and we will all accept him in this role. Vishal has done well with Kapur here. Shahid as Charlie is outstanding. Shahid as Guddu is extraordinary. If I had to pick between the two, I’d obviously go with bad-ass Charlie. I think Shahid’s tanned look with the rugged goatee was perfect for his character. His outburst scenes are brilliant. One scene in which Shahid stands out the most is when he confronts Priyanka about lying to him. This boy can act!
