Akshay Kumar is touted as the superstar who keeps bollywood running by doing multiple films a year and bring in a volume of business.

What about the losses his high-budget hyped movies have made in 2009?

CCTC:15-20 cr
Tasveer: – 10-15 cr
KI: 15-20 cr
Blue: 35-40 cr

The cumulative losses for the industry is in the range 75-95 cr. The middle age super-stardom crisis of Akshay Kumar in 2007 has made the entire industry RED with losses. But the ultimate blame lies on the top 3 idiots – SRK, Aamir, Hrithik for not doing movies.

ps – Akshay would not have made 75-95 cr profits with his 4 hits in 2007!

Tashan, SIngh Is King, Chandni Chowk, Tasveer, Kambakhat Ishq and now Blue. A string of bad movies one after another and box office under performers. Akshay needs to rethink..Honeymoon is over.

I dont think a 70 cr net movie like SIK qualifies to be termed as underperformer … but Tashan, CCTC, Tasveer, KI were all duds critically and commercially … Blue is likely to join the illustrious list unless it can at least double its 30-32 cr initial (as per reports and not figures).

but yeah akki has too many duds in too short a time … whether his initial is still there remains to be seen with DDD … diwali release of a hyped up movie was bound to open well as Blue did … but then these days Saif’s movie opens at 40+ cr … Salman’s Wanted at 32 cr and even NY (with lesser stars) at 28 cr …. Kaminey without Pune and restricted Mumbai got to a 26 cr start.

Inspite of all this, Akshay is likely to open DDD very well … he might as well get his 3rd 50+ cr Net movie in his career after Welcome and SIK. He is still a big star … but heavily paying the price of superstardom.

He wud had been ok if the likes of CCTC, KI, Blue, etc were small to medium budget movies … but as a superstar he now has the burden of big expectancy, lavish films with large amount of money riding on each film .. he simply has no answer for his new found late superstardom and is finding the stakes/burden of superstardom too much to handle.

Such huge expectancy from superstars is the reason why others are concentrating so hard on each film, doing drastically low number of films so that they can satisfy the expectations from them.

The ones who believe KI is a success of some sort at 46-47 cr total net, actually rebukes Akshay’s superstardom (unfortunately all his fans do) … how can a biggie of a superstar be judged by lowering the bar so much? If one does then he seriously cant argue Akshay is a superstar.

Success or failure is relative to the investment, it cant be judged on absolute collections … a 50 cr budget movie sold at anywhere from 65-75 cr overall is expected to do much more than 45 cr (a figure at which movies like Kaminey or NY can be adjudged above average or hits). Blue in all likeliness may fall short of that figure.

The reason such gigantic amounts get invested in KI/Blue is to get proportionally higher grosses.

Indian Business is still fragmented, a movie which is superhit in one centre and hugely profitable could still only be recovery for other centre.

Some sub distributers lost money on SIK as they bought the film for unheard prices. But this is not an isolated case(yes its rare but has been happening all along).

SIK did 70+ cr and deserves to be called a big success.

CC2C, Tasveer, Tashan, KI and Blue are definite underperformers.

unless a movie does blockbuster business in India, there are always some sub-distributor or someone in the value chain who loses some money … any multiplex hit is such a case study unless it has not been screened in any single screens at all.

But the larger point is in such scenario most in the value chain makes enuf of money to compensate for a few small losses/recovery here or there and the movie is dubbed as a hit … even SRK/AAmir’s smaller hits throughout their career have been susceptible to this.

Also its amusing that how some celebrate good openings of Akshay’s duds … A superstar is bound to open well, thats why he is a superstar … most of Aamir/SRK/Hrithik’s commercial duds have opened well over the years.

Also once a superstar, everything gets magnified … even failures. Aamir’s Mangal Pandey wud have done more than 50 cr had it released today … so wud Hrithik’s Lakshya and so forth … these movies are flops by common knowledge and perception. In the same vain, KI or Blue being called Flop shudnt excite fans to go on a rampage about SRK/Hrithik/Aamir fans trying to degrade Akshay and KI in NG or Bachchan-fans are doing the same in SS. The bar is similar for any superstar.

If one is to lower the bar for akshay, then it first needs to be acknowledged he isnt a superstar in the first place.

One cant expect to have laddoos in both hands.

    LOL.

BTw – this kind of anchors my point earlier about all those ridiculous articles that come on NG when his movies release. If you read NG for the last week – you would think that Blue is some kind of blockbuster!
