V Ramakrishnan has been awarded the 2009 Chemistry Nobel Prize for his research on ribosomes. No sooner than the news was announced, there was euphoria particularly in the Government Departments and everyone from the State Science Minister to the President and Prime Minster conveyed that it is a matter of great pride for India.

This post is not about the achievement of V Ramakrishnan as I think, everyone who has won a Nobel is very good in his/her field. The point is about how Indian people like Ramakrishnan are and should India be celebrating the achievement of people like this as if its their own ?

Should we be ecstatic if Bobby Jindal is elected as a Governor of Louisiana (Spelling??) or if L N Mittal is a part of one of the largest M&A deals globally. If birthplace is the only criteria then is Mother Teresa Albanian or an Indian ? Is Sergey Bin (Co-founder of Google) Russian or an American ?

Ofcourse all the people mentioned above have achievements which should be celebrated by Human beings at large, but just wondering if the nation in particular should go ga-ga over this ??

What do my fellow NG colleagues think ??
