wanted movie of salman khan wallpaper The resurgence of masala…WANTED and GHAJINI!

A lot has been said in the past 6 months about masala cinema, the sudden resurgence of it, and offcourse both GHAJINI and WANTED. Firstly, let me just say of both GHAJINI and WANTED only the former truly qualifies as an “authentic” masala film.

But before I get on to that a quick note on masala cinema overall of late. In recent times, we’ve seen a large number of films trying to either pay homage to the genre or poke fun at it. Right from Yashraj films like BUNTY AUR BABLI, JHOOM BARABAR JHOOM, TASHAN, to OM SHANTI OM however in recent times we’ve only got two films which truly qualify as authentic masala films. Shaad Ali’s BUNTY AUR BABLI is a film which in many ways successfully harkened back to the Manmohan Desai cinema, played out like a fully fledged masala film, as well as paying a homage to the genre (the biggest in-joke here was offcourse having Amitabh in the film). Ali’s next JHOOM BARABAR JHOOM again promised to be a Desai-esque musical, however this was a film which was trying to be much cleverer by poking fun at the entire genre but in a new garb.

There is a lot being written about resurgence of masala … i am not of a opinion its a good thing for bollywood … whats the point in taking steps backward? was the old masala films the greatest and there can be no way fwd than to revert back?

i wud prefer Aamir to make something as intelligent or interesting as Memento than a growling shouting silly action stuffed lousiness … wanted is much much worse.

Bollywood producers shud invest their time in technical aspects than join some masala bandwagon.

How the hell are Ghajini/Wanted even slightly better than KJO/YRF saccharine stuffs? Sadly i see the same guys wo used to blast SRK now pumped up with so-called mordern masala!

    Well said Doga.

Ach: No ones saying they’re better than the other. It’s all trends, I think the trend of action movies will make a comeback over the next few months (good news for KITES to some degree).

Personally, I prefer the masala of GHAJINI and WANTED then to say DTPH or JPKHH!

I wud say Ghajini/Wanted are as bad as DTPH/KKHH or what have you … one camp cheers for one type while the other camp are content praising the other type … interestingly both camps believe the other type is regressive/bad.

I fail to see what wonderful thing Boney or Allu has done to BW … much in the same vain of what YRF had done.

Hardly matters how Wanted helping Kites can make se see a bright side of bring southern masala to BW forefront. I hear they are making magadheera in hindi now … sad state of affairs.

I would add Krrish and Dhoom 2 to that list. These are films that have some value only for a certain subset of viewers.

“”I mean Entertaining movies, masala or no masala”"

100 pct…No movie or author have a copy right on “”masala movies”".

I dont mind so called masala movies like “Ghajini” or a “Wanted”: but i condemn the double standrads of some of the authors(The same pseudo intellectuals) to blast YRF/KJO and at the same time celebrate a movie like “”Wanted”"
