Lata and Meena Kumari fanatic

Probably everyone’s getting bored of the Meena Kumari theme, but i’m not, so here’s one more.  But it’ll be the last one for the moment.

Today’s pick is one of Roshan Saab’s masterpieces, and is a perfect example of why he’s my second favourite all-time composer after Madan Mohan.  His music was sooo melodious.

The movie is Noorjehan, based on the Mughal empress, a role that apparently Meena Kumari was very excited to play.  (I read somewhere that she was earlier offered Jahanar but that she herself recommended Mala Sinha).

The song is one of Lata’s personal favourites.  Sadly it seems that it wasn’t picturised, but the youtube clip has some fantastic photos.

Raat ki mehfil sooni sooni, aankhen purnam dil nakaam, hona hi tha yeh anjaam.

Sar ko jahaan takraayein jaa kar aisi koi deewar na thi, haye re kismat hum duniya mein pyar ke bhi haqdaar nahin, dil hota jo apne bas mein lete na hum pyar ka naam, hona hi tha yeh anjaam.

Bhool gaye the apni hasti ishq wafaa ke josh mein hum, sab kuch kho kar bebas ho kar ab aaye hain hosh mein hum, dil hota jo apne bas mein lete na hum pyar ka naam, hona hi tha yeh anjaam.

Great Reminder Salim.A blast from the past. For no particular reason, or at lesat not one that I can lay a finger on,( perhaps based loosely on the same raga) this song reminds me of Begum Akhtars ‘ Door hai manzil, rahein mushkil, aalam hai tanhai ka’. I was trying to find it on you tube and elsewhere on the net but no such luck.

Beautiful song Salim. I have to say that I cannot see the similarity between this and the Begum Akhtar song, but loved that one anyway. Thanks OutKast.

Wah!! None can replace her. She has this calming effect..one can almost sense ones pulse slowing down into a meditative rhythm.A zillion thanks OutKast. I wonder how I missed it. Perhaps I was googling/youtubing for ‘door hai manzil’when I should have for “Begum Akhtar”.
