Salim

Lata and Meena Kumari fanatic

I don’t think I’ve yet recommended this song, but I’m not quite sure why, seeing as it’s one of my favourites.  It’s hard to describe what I think of this song, but the combination of Lata and Meena Kumari at their peaks is naturally bound to be magic.  Add to that some sublime music by Sudhir Phake and lyrics by Narendra Sharma and the end product moves from being magical to divine.

The movie is a favourite of mine.  It’s heartbreaking and beautiful at the same time.  A really moving film, with such warm performances – Meena Kumari is adorable, at her enchanting best, and Balraj Sahni is excellant as always.  The story is about two brothers, whose parents have died – the elder gets married after being persuaded that it would be good for his little brother to have a bhabhi…he is worried that she may treat him badly, but the bhabhi in question, Meena Kumari, enters their lives like an angel.  The bhabhi-devar bond is central to the movie.  Perhaps I don’t describe it appealingly, but it’s a great film.

Thank you Salim, what a divine song! Meena Kumari had the facility to look totally apt for any role of the time – be it a bhabhi (here), choti bahu (SBAG), or a dancer (Pakeezah). Please keep posting more such gems.

    Sudhir Phadke and his
bhav geet’ matrix has been something that keeps me enchanted always. There was an air of prevailing calm and divine peace in these compositions. From the same film Salim there is ‘lau lagati geet gaati’

( the embed code.. I hope it works or then would RKS and SOM help please?)

Such songs were a reflection of those times when life was slow, core of existence was centered and not fragmented into a zillion issues which finally add up to zilch. Conflicts were there since ’sangharsh’ is an aspect of life, yet serenity was pre dominant, as is so evident in these songs.

Thanks for the simply wonderful reminder Salim. Made my day.

Ah.ah.. didnt work. Will try and paste the embed again. I looked up the comments in the admin page and the remainder of my comment on the song appears in the you tube box. Will try and retrieve from there and re post. It will be of much help if we are given the option of editing comments.

Salim..this song from Aarti isnt so well known but for some reason has always stayed with me in its melody, emotion and romanticism it naturally evokes. The ‘laavni’ bit in the beginning is not such a welcome one but important for the scene and as take off for the lyrics.

Its amazing how sensual she could look fully clothed with just her eyes and her smile conveying such meaning. I truly miss this simple, romantic, uncomplicated interplay between protagonists in todays films. Everything is so overt and loud. In fact romance in this denotation barely exists any more . Its the time for frilly, frothy rom coms! Or then Racey ‘tu nahin aur sahi’ flings.

    Hey Rohit..

My previous comment, one before last( Numbered comments de do please)was to have the next one in it. Since it appeared only with one line “So ‘they’ ought to be calling you MagiQal-andar..
Wave your wand for this embed too.” I realised some glitch has surfaced again.

I opened up another window logged into NG again, went into the ADMIN>Comments page and found the you tube box nestling with the remainder of my comment in it in place of video. So then back to you tube, another copy of the embed code> back to previous window pasted the code> back to admin> copy comment > back to previous window pasted comment and published. After all this back and forth.. Presto! It worked this time.

The comments page holds the previous comment,so one dekho will reveal the problem. But alls well that ends well.

    Qalandar ..am using MF.

Oh.. and now this comment wont publish. Is this happening only to me? On hitting the ’submit comment button this is what I get:

Warning: unlink(/home/bunty/public_html/wp-content/cache/wp-cache-7c01c25beb1d5fa3f756798c7332673f.html) [function.unlink]: No such file or directory in /home/bunty/public_html/wp-content/plugins/wp-cache/wp-cache-phase2.php on line 297

So I go back and re publish again. Same result. Will try till it gets on.
