Taare Zameen Par, Chak De India in race for national awards
Animesh Singh , New Delhi, Aug 14 (PTI)
Aamir Khan’s Taare Zameen Par, Chak De India starring Shah Rukh Khan and Jab We Met featuring Shahid Kapur and Kareena Kapoor are among the films in the race for national film awards for the year 2007.
Noted film maker Sai Paranjpe has been appointed as the head of the jury in the feature film category for national film awards for the year.
Sources in the Ministry for Information and Broadcasting told PTI today that well-known writer Namita Gokhale would be heading the jury for selecting best writings on Indian Cinema while documentary film maker Ashoke Vishwanathan will head the jury for non-film category.
More than 100 entries, including Taare Zameen Par and Chak De India, have been received by the ministry for both feature film and non-feature film categories.
The juries for respective categories were notified by the ministry last week, sources said.

Mumbai: As the Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Ministry gets ready to announce the winners of the National Awards for 2007, buzz is that two of Bollywood’s biggest stars Aamir and Shah Rukh Khan are in the contention for the Best Actor Award.
While Shah Rukh Khan has been nominated for his role as hockey coach Kabir Khan in Chak De India, Aamir Khan is in competition for his restrained performance as Art teacher Ram Shankar Nikumbh in Taare Zameen Par, Aamir Khan is also said to be in the running for Best Film for Taare Zameen Par – having directed and produced the film. News is that Darsheel Safari is also being considered for the Best child actor award for his performance as the dyslexic Ishaan Awasthi in the same film.
Shah Rukh Khan’s home production, Om Shanti Om has also been nominated for a National Award in the best feature film for wholesome entertainment category. Aamir Khan earlier won an award in this category for Lagaan which he produced in 2001.
However neither Shah Rukh nor Aamir has ever won a national award for Best Actor yet in their career.
Meanwhile I&B Minister Ambika Soni is likely to announce the National Awards next week and President Pratibha Patil is scheduled to handover the awards in Delhi in October this year.

Bollywood seem to be grabbing the limelight again when I am sure there will be few deserving regional films and performances.National film awards are just not about Bollywood films.

Som,
How many regional movies have you watched to arrive at this conclusion…?? Yes ..national awards are not about BW movies only ..History shows that national awards are dominated by regional movies ..So whats the problem if a few deserving Hindi movies makes the cut???

Is there a rule that one or the other industry should dominate the National awards? I think in most years in the past the Hindi film industry was just not in contention.

did i read this right? they are comparing SRK’s performance in CDI with aamir’s in TZP.. duh! it is as ridiculous as Saif winning for hum tum.
give it to darsheel or srk idiots – aamir should never be in the race.

agree..Aamir shount be in the race as an actor for TZP…i am ok him being in the race as a producer or director for TZP

TZP may win the best movie for popular or children … dont think aamir or srk deserves national awards for cdi or tzp as actors.

Raj: I have not seen any regional movie. But my point is too much focus is given to Bollywood when it is usually the regional films which take the cake on most of the occasions. As far as SRK (he should have got it for Swades) and Aamir performances are concerned, I don’t think they deserve it as rightly said by Ach., there are better performances.I can’t even fathom why Aamir is in the race at the first place!I can understand him being nominated in the Best Director category but Best Actor?? Com’on! Since when has the National Film Award Jury started to consider mediocre performance? Or is it just the “name” that does the talking?

In another year we will be wondering if Hritik deserves it. There is a best child actor category at the National awards, and I’d say that Darsheel has a lock on that. The only one I can safely predict. As for this nominations business, National awards never had nominations in the past – so all speculation on the part of HT, picked up by other media, makes good press.

Som – can you list in the past which years too much focus was given to BW movies? There is no point in mentioning who should not get it, if we have no list of who should! Reminds me of the Slumdog music Oscar and all the noise that this was not Rahman’s best. It was still the best THAT year.

“There is a best child actor category at the National awards, and I’d say that Darsheel has a lock on that. The only one I can safely predict.”
This is something I can bank on too unless a performance in some regional film surprises.

Som,
Can you elaborate which performamnces you are talking about when you say there are better performances???
“”But my point is too much focus is given to Bollywood when it is usually the regional films which take the cake on most of the occasions”"
I dont think too much focus is given to BW in national awrads…If you look at the history it is the regional movies which alawys been highlighted…BW was never in the contention….Secondly even out of 15 odd categories this year you would find 2/3 BW movies making cut in 2/3 categories only…so even this time too its the reagional movies which are dominating…
RAJ 27 August 2009

Anyways..national awards are as dubious as FF or Screen awards…Else how can you digest national awards to saif for Humtum(At least he was decent here) and BIG B(Was awful ) for Black…

I do not think BF (2004) and Omkara (2006) were even in the same year. I think many admire Pankaj Kapur, I find his performance tic ridden and unchanged from the days of JBDY and Mandi. Though he changed a lot physically, you could never mistake him for anyone else because of the facial tics. He was outstanding as Abbaji in Maqbool, I do recall that one clearly.
Som 27 August 2009

Saif’s award for HumTum is being criticized by few a lot here. I don’t find anything wrong in that performance. It is not a rule to give credit only to rona-dhona or serious performance.
Also, I feel “best actor” category should be renamed as “best actor in lead role” for national awards and “best star actor in lead role” for commercial awards as “best actor” term is misleading and often incorrect.
pardesi 27 August 2009

Then Saif would have got best star actor in non-serious role

SRK, Aamir lose National Award for to Kanchivaram lead actor
It is learnt from reliable sources within the awards committee that both the Khan superstars Shah Rukh and Aamir up for the best actor award for Chak De and Taare Zameen Par, respectively, lost the prestigious award to Tamil-Telugu-Kannada actor Prakash Raj.
Prakash Raj, it is reliably learnt, has won the award for his sterling performance as a silk weaver in Priyadarshan’s Kanchivaram. This would be his second National award. He earlier won the best supporting actor award for Mani Ratnam’s Iruvar. The film has also beaten popular entry Taare Zameen Par.
Another winner….
Contrary to reports in a section of the press, Anil Kapoor’s Gandhi My Father and SRK’s Chak De have lost the Nargis Dutt Award for Best Film On National Integration to Bhavna Talwar’s Dharm. Confirming this, Dharm’s producer Sheetal Talwar says, “Yes,our film has won the Nargis Dutt Award. My wife Bhavna is the first debutant director to win this award . Earlier, it went to stalwarts like Mani Ratnam.”

Yeah that is something I am confused. Kancheevaram was released sometime in September 2008. Dharam, TZP and CDI were all 2007 films. Anyway things should be clear by 3.30 in the afternoon today when they are expected to present the jury report.

Prakash Raj is a very fine performer from what I’ve seen. But I still think TZP and CDI should win something.

National Film Awards: Prakash Raaj best actor
MUMBAI: The National Film Awards for 2007 are likely to be announced shortly. And it is neither Shahrukh Khan nor Aamir Khan but Tamil actor
Prakash Raaj who gets the best actor award for 2007 for his performance in Tamil film “Kanchivaram”.
Raaj has earlier won the best supporting actor award for his film “Iruvar” in 1998 and a special jury award in 2003.
Umashree gets the best actress award for her performance in Girish Kasaravalli’s Kannada film “Gulabi Talkies”.
“Kanchivaram” has also been chosen as the best film
for 2007. Directed by Priyadarshan, the film depicts the lives and times of silk-weavers of Kancheepuram in pre-Independent India.
The best child actor award goes to Sharad Goyekar for his role in the Marathi film “Tingya”.
Darshan Zariwala gets the best supporting actor award for his role in Feroz Abbas Khan’s film “Gandhi My Father”.
There is also a special jury award for this film, which explores the troubled relationship between Harilal Gandhi and Mahatma Gandhi.
“Chak De” gets the award in the wholesome entertainment category and “Taare Zameen Par” in the family welfare category.
Playback singer Shankar Mahadevan has won the award for the song “Meri Maa” from the film “Taare Zameen Par”.
The jury was headed by Sai Paranjpe; other members included Ashok Viswanathan and Namita Gokhale. About 102 films and 106 non-feature films were considered.
The list had been finalized last week but because of the death of Andhra Pradesh chief minister YSR Reddy, the announcement was postponed.

That’s a cheap shot.Aamir has spoken well about many small films–he is not likely to take umbrage against the jury for chosing Kanchivaram; I don’t think so.But yes, TZP was as deserving of the wholesome entertainment category as much as CDI. I suppose it was either CDI or TZP–and the jury simply decided to give awards to both films in different categories.Like giving toffees to every kid, and a chocolate to the first ranker.
What particularly saddens me is that poor DarsheelSafary lost out in the child actor category. Darsheel carried TZP. I don’t know anything about the Marathi film and its child actor—but Darsheel was widely appreciated in TZP.His big chance gone.

Thrilled to see Prakashraj, this pillar of both Tamil and Telugu cinema get a national award for best actor. The other great thing is that there is now little doubt that this film will release with english subtitles, perhaps even in connection with a western DVD release…
However, it is quite odd that films from different years are in consideration for the same national awards: Chak de India and Taare Zameen Par were 2007 releases — if I am not mistaken, Kanchivaram was a 2008 release no?

I find it bit weird to see news channels being surprised at CDI and TZP not winning the important National awards or for that matter SRK and Aamir losing best actor. It is something that is not new, as I had said few days back the regional films have always shown their presence at the national awards and grabbed the important awards. Even the best of Bollywood films never manage that.
And I am glad 1971 has finally got its recognition, winning the best film in Hindi. It was one of my favorite films in 2007 and has been greatly under rated since its release.

The rule says any film that has been approved/certified by the Central Board of Film Certification in between the period 1st January 2007 and 31st December 2007 is eligible.Priyadarshan’s film though released in 2008 must have been certified before Dec 31st 2007 to satisfy the eligibility criterion.

Off topic: “I thought Aamir Khan was nuts!”
Are you surprised at the recognition and accolades the film has received?
I was very surprised by Aamir [Khan] really! (Laughs) I didn’t expect that reaction from him. I was really surprised at the way he reacted to the film when he watched it. He was like a child; clapping and laughing, slapping Kiran [Rao] on the back. I thought he was nuts! (Laughs) And it was a very worrying moment when he came because I thought it was Aamir; I thought he would get up and walk out after half an hour. I don’t know him from anyone so this was the first time we met but after that we’ve been in touch.

2 National film awards till March, sai to head jury
Indian film fraternity will be busy receiving awards from the Information and Broadcasting ministry till end of March 2010.
In between the two national film awards — for 2007 and 2008 — to be awarded in October and March respectively, the actors will also be receiving awards at Indian Panorama at India International Film Festival in Goa in November this year.
“We have decided to end the backlog of national film awards by end of March next year,” said S.M. Khan, director,
Directorate of Films, the ministry’s unit responsible for giving awards.
No film award ceremony was held in 2007 because filmmaker Anand Patwardhan had challenged the process for selection of documentaries for the awards in Bombay High Court. It resulted in film award running a year behind schedule.
The I&B ministry is expected to announce the process for national film awards 2007 this week. Over 100 feature films and 50 documentaries are expected to competing for the national awards.
A ministry official, not willing to be quoted, said noted film director Sai Paranjpai was expected to head the feature film jury, which would consist of about 15 members.
Paranjpai is known for movies like Chashme Baddoor.
For the non-feature category, Kolkata’s Ashok Vishwanathan is expected to head the jury. Delhi-based Namita Gokhale is expected to head the jury on best writings on films.
The feature film jury will start the process of screening over 100 films at Siri Fort Auditorium from August 17. The non-feature film jury will start watching documentaries from August 27.
“By first week of September the juries are expected to submit the list of national awards to the I&B minister,” said a senior official.

Uma Shree is arguably one of the best actresses in the Kannada film industry today — she has picked up state awards quite regularly.
Now, her first National Award further proves that fact. Uma Shree bagged the Best Actress award for her role in Girish Kasaravalli’s Gulabi Talkies. She played a divorced Muslim woman, who is an avid film fan and who is prepared to forego her work for the sake of watching a film.
The film won rave reviews for her performance and a Best Actress state award.
Uma Shree speaks to R G Vijayasarathy about winning her first National Award.
How do you feel to win your first Best Actress National Award for your performance in Gulabi Talkies?
When I got the news a few days ago, I thought it was a rumour. I have been busy with some political work and could not think about it later. Today, I got a call congratulating me for this award. I am extremely happy. It is yet to sink in.

I’m on top of the world: Prakash Raj
As reported by Sify.com two days earlier, Prakash Raj has won the National Award for Best Actor for his performance in the Priyadarshan-directed film Kanchivaram. The win was made official today when the 55th National Film Awards were announced.
Congratulate Prakash Raj
After hearing the news, an elated Prakash Raj spoke exclusively to Sify.com.
Congratulations on getting the National Award for Kanchivaram.
Thanks a million. I’m on top of the world as Kanchivaram is a film that’s very close to my heart.
Is there anybody you would like to thank?
I owe this award to Priyadarshan. When he first narrated the story to me, I fell in love with it. The way he narrated the script and the way the film was shot was brilliant.
Let me also tell you that after seeing the first copy, Priyan predicted that I would get a National Award for my performance and his words have come true. [Laughs.]
Could you elaborate?
Like I told you, I was completely floored by the script and I completely surrendered to it. Priyan’s passion while he made the film and the trust he had in me was tremendous.
After I read the script, I was willing to give any number of dates to Priyan. The character of Vengatam is a role of a lifetime.
How did you prepare for the role?
I just did what Priyan told me to do, but I also did a lot of background study about my character and the weaver community in Kanchivaram.
I would also say what enhanced my performance were the people associated with the film.
The art work by Sabu Cyril, who incidentally got a National Award for his work in Om Shanti Om; make-up man Pattanam Rasheed, who gave my character his look, also won a National Award with me for the Malayalam film Pardesi.
Congratulate Prakash Raj
And a special thanks to cameraman Thiru whose camerawork was amazing.
What next?
I will definitely do more meaningful and realistic films in future.
