After the terrible period of producers’ strike that had literally got Bollywood on standstill, it was Kabir Khan directed NEW YORK that had broken the jinx. While the film went on to complete 50 days at the box office as recently as the weekend gone, now comes Sabbir Khan’s KAMBAKKHT ISHQ which would be celebrating its 50th day at theaters today. The film proved to be yet another huge money spinner at the box office and as per the makers, EROS International, it even went on to take the biggest ever opening in the history of Indian cinema.
For Akshay Kumar too, the film came as a huge relief as the film had to work in a major way for him before he ends the year with BLUE and DE DANA DAN, two more expensive films. Though critics were yet again quite harsh on KAMBAKKHT ISHQ, audiences showed that they had a mind of their own. They flocked in dozens to the theaters and made sure that in the opening weekend itself, the film turned out to be a safe preposition.
The film did manage to open quite a few debates around Hindi cinema turning regressive or the entire portrayal of women in the film or the sheer gimmicks which KAMBAKKHT depended upon. In fact at places, the hatred factor has continued to be so prevalent that reams are being spent till date on how KAMBAKKHT ISHQ was perhaps the worst film of the year.
However, the fact remains that none of that really harmed KAMBAKKHT ISHQ as it went on to have a long stay at the box office and is now in its 8th week. Of course the arrival of newer and successful films like LOVE AAJ KAL and KAMINEY has resulted in a diminished print count for the film. Still, with the film’s home video being expected to hit the stands soon, it would be picture clear if the entire argument around KAMBAKKHT ISHQ being perhaps unsuitable for family audiences holds true or not.

While much has been said about Akshay’s BO clout, Kareena’s presence has to be acknowledged. She did help to add to the attraction and imo shares the honor.

look at kareena’s choice. while her beaus had super hits in LAK and Kaminey – she managed a massive dud with akshay! i think saif and shahid shud team up – kareena and akshay deserve each other more. if they can include salman – they could remake ‘Dumb, dumber and dumbest’ !

Beld I think you are talking about Tashan.
But KI is indeed a success story, though in comparision to LAK it is lesser. But i think you will disagree with this which is alright as India is a free country and you are a free man. Just don’t go to US and behave like a big star (thanks to NG) in front of US custom officers. You cannot even reason about being a ‘Khan’ (my assumption).

since u brought up Tashan – i saw that yday. First half was actually not as bad but its the 2nd half which destroyed the movie. Havent seen a worse 2nd half to movie in a long long time.
and ya gor…a bhai – as much spin as you choose to put – KI is a BIG dud in my books and i think in yours too – tho u are loathe to admit it!
