Qalandar
I promise somewhat irregular posts on (in no particular order) Indian politics, cinema, and anything else that catches my fancy... Why "Qalandar"? So-called "liminal" religious traditions are a particular interest of mine, and "qalandar" is the sort of untranslatable, ambiguous, yet enormously evocative word that for me touches upon and articulates the experience of the sub-continent's "little" traditions in a particularly memorable way...not to mention the fact that in popular lingo the word has more than a merely religious/spiritual connotation, and can mean a bunch of other things, including a smart alec, wannabe, what-have-you...

From other threads (I am deleting the originals):
Rudresh: “Nice design, need bit of color change i think”
Rudresh: “and one think ,keep the link to go back to home.
I mean one can go back by click the naachgaana header but still it will be better if there is separate link”
Qalandar: “I agree that the blue motif doesn’t go that well with the yellow/black styling. Other than that I like it, especially the “speech bubble” effect that reminds one of gchat function on iPhone…”

I dont like the design of the new NG platform. It seems to be not coherent. The commments seem quite scattered, dark black lines in between ever comment is again not a good idea. We are wasting a lot of space because of the size of the images.
I dont like this design

Within a post also you can see “continue”..and when clicked does nothing but refereshing the page.

I liek the new format – takes a bit of getting used to, and is a little less “clean” looking than the old, but slowly we are getting more black back and that is like the old NG look.

Reduce the size of ‘gravatar’ image in the comments to the minimum. I do not like the new look of the ‘comments’ on the thread.

Please fix the views… It helps to know the number of views in determining what is liked or not on NG. I was hoping that it would be fixed this time.

I preferred old layout, where SB was at the bottom…
Don’t like the new layout with SB after the recent comments.

Rohit thanks for your response. Thats what I like about an active community, they really act as a very strong QA team
Couple of more thoughts from my side (starting from top of the page)
1. Below the NG logo there is a big gray box, dont see the reason for that. Is that missing the Top Navigation ?
2. The author of this post is Qalandar and the name comes below the Gravatar. My suggestions here : Keep the size of the Top gravatar to around 80% of the current size and then the name Qalandar should come to the right of the image. The font size for Qalandar (Author name) should be quite small (in my opinion this should be smaller than the title of the post)
3. No need for Comments to Date, there can be a link See all Posts to the right of the name only. Ensure that all this is aligned so that this comes in the same frame as the Gravatar of the author
4. The little write-up about the author should not come, in my opinion, with the post everytime. Instead the name of the author can be hyperlinked which opens a new page with the author details and all the posts of the author. Ideally I’d like to see the actual post without too much scrolling, right now to see any post i have to scroll down as the top part is usually occupied with unimportant information
(Feedback to be continued…)

I and 2 are fixed in my view of the front page, but yes name could be in smaller font.. I like the ABOUT the author bit…

5. See this blog post http://gigaom.com/2009/08/11/n.....o-symbian/ and you’ll notice that how clean it is. It shows Title of the Blog at the top (in large fonts) followed by author, Date Posted and comments. I think we should just have that below the top navigation and cut the other irrelevant info
6. Again in the comments the name of the person, date and time should come on the same line rather than taking 2 lines, the gravatar should be very small and please get rid of the page-flip graphic with every comment. Its meaningless.
7. The gravatar of person posting the comment should be around 25% of the current size
8. Option of Reply-to-Comments would be a good addition too
9. I dont agree that there should be an option to edit Comments. Option to Edit Post should be there and the authors should mention that with an Update in their post if they discovered something after series of comments started but comments should not be allowed to be edited. It might make a conversation around a particular comment meaningless.
Right Panel Top
================
Display Join NG now prominently as a nice button. Let it attract more attention (ofcourse if you want to attract more members)
The RSS feeds should be there on the right also so that we can subscribe to feeds for posts that we want to and would make the experience more engaging.
Categories should come one below the other
==============================
I think I’m done with my feedback
) There is a lot more, but this is good for a start

Ok Rohit I saw Neelu’s comment and then I realised maybe I was looking at something incorrect. She is right and when I looked at NG on Internet Explorer the site looks very good.
I actually use Google Chrome for browsing and on Chrome it looks terrible. Please fix

On the NG front page if the summary of the post includes a link, you cannot click on the Hyperlink (and open the link).. Has it been disabled deliberately ? or is it something which will be fixed ? Would like to click on the link with out opening up the post.
@ Akshay – You are Welcome !

About comments in my opinion we are wasting a lot of space. See here
http://www.box.net/shared/12aepol5o7
Instead we can have something like this

(please ignore the quality as I quickly put that using Paint)

Akshay – we can save space by making shorter comments too

Rohit,Q whatever you do is fine, but dont remove the number of comments thing, i usually go the threads which have more comments, as there are more chances of people arguing, lol.
But yeah seriously consider it.

Arre Akshay ji – joke thaa! Point is that saving space should hardly be an issue, but maybe we want to save our wrists by having to do less scrolling.
