The only line that makes sense in the script of Agyaat says, “Kamyabi ka insaan ke kaam se kya matlab?” (What does success of a person have to do with the excellence of his work?). Certainly it applies to Ram Gopal Varma. His last horror flick Phoonk was a hit and Agyaat claims to have recovered investment even before its release. But what does success have to do with the caliber of one’s work?
From the very outset this supposed spook-fest goes miserably wrong with an item number in the title credits. Agyaat has a film-inside-film setting where a movie unit ventures inside deep jungle for shooting. Strangely the only scene they film there is another item number in an indoor set. The hero agrees for the film merely to be with the heroine and never bothers to ask for the script. RGV disregards his screenplay with as much nonchalance and this forest film simply goes to the dogs.
Non-stars aren’t a problem but RGV ropes in non-actors (rather ham-kings) who keep the budget low and decibel levels high. Even the headcount is kept small with just around 10 members making up for the entire cast and crew of the film. Ramu adds odd traits to each character and makes them act abnormally, though the deliberation leads to no difference.
So you have a South Indian producer (Ishrat Ali) in an eternally jaw-dropping ‘aaiyoo aaiyoo’ mode. The eccentric director (Howard Rosemeyer) is as wooden as the pencil he nibbles on perpetually. It’s irritating to look at the jungle guide (Joy Fernandes) who doesn’t believe in blinking. The hero (Gautam Rode) keeps throwing tantrums and the heroine (Priyanka Kothari) keeps shedding clothes.
The lack of sane performances is substituted by Mr. Camera and Mrs. Background music. But Ramu makes them overact as well with continual revolutionary (read revolving) cinematography and screechy score. In fact the theme track is a regurgitated version of the legendary song Kahi Deep Jale Kahin Dil from the horror classic Bees Saal Baad and one dopey item song claims itself to be a tribute to Zeenat Aman’s Hare Krishna Hare Ram. Talk about laughing in a horror film! What’s actually horrific about the film is the awful singing in these tracks.
At the outset, one might want to acknowledge Ram Gopal Varma for choosing an unconventional plot. But through its annoying execution, Agyaat only invites ridicule. The director merely conceives half a dozen death sequences in the forest and absolutely ignores to unveil the evil forces behind it. Relax if you are crying a spoiler there; this film has scope for none. The maverick director takes his title a bit too seriously and keeps the evil forces of the forest ‘unknown’ beyond the end credits. In fact your psyche is teased beyond belief with anticipation of a sequel as you realize this jungle has just made a scapegoat out of you.
Amidst all this murderous mayhem, the actual hero (Nitin Reddy) still has the inclination to confess love to his screen heroine in the climax. Agyaat comes nowhere close to the much-speculated Predator though the director takes ‘path-breaking’ references from Tremors. Ram Gopal Varma would still like to call it an Indian version of The Blair Witch Project. Years later, this noisy nameless attempt would be referred to as ‘Which Blare project?’
“Thanks to its decent sustenance over the weekdays and the Raksha Bandhan holiday on Wednesday, the film closed the first week at a fantastic distributor share of Rs21 crore and is expected to finish its entire run at Rs35 crore”
“Eros, which acquired Love Aaj Kal for Rs58 crore, including print and advertising, is expected to make a profit of Rs8-10 crore on the film. Another big weekend could easily take this figure higher.”
Luck has collected approx 3.75 crore nett in week two taking its two week total to 20.50 crore nett. The Mumbai circuit collected 1.38 crore nett and Delhi/UP grossed 76 lakhs nett. The all India two week distributor share is 11 crore approx.
Both AGYAAT and TEREE SANG competed for audience attention this Friday. While AGYAAT was strong at single screens — 60% to 70% — the numbers at plexes weren’t too encouraging [20% +]. On the other hand, TEREE SANG sprung a pleasant surprise by fetching a better start at plexes. The reports are positive and the film is expected to grow with a strong word of mouth. Saturday and Sunday, of course, hold the key.
The youth has taken to TEREE SANG and have appreciated the subject as also the lead pair of the film. However, the ending of AGYAAT has come in for sharp criticism from several places. The silver lining is, both AGYAAT and TEREE SANG are low-cost fares and wouldn’t find it tough to recover their investments.
Love Aaj Kal:Takes an extra-ordinary start. The opening weekend was outstanding, but the film showed a decline from Monday onwards. The business has been exceptional at multiplexes, but not as strong at single screens and also smaller centres. Yet, the volume of business at multiplexes has been humungous. The 1st week nett is between approx. Rs. 42 cr. and Rs. 44 cr. Superb!
Taran has some incomplete collections, only 156 prints have been reported. But collections in Mumbai(should be close to 7cr),Ghaziabad and Jaipur do indicate the film would have done well across the board.
Taran should start mentioning about the centers which have incomplete collections. Ahmedabad, Gurgaon and Pune I am sure are incomplete but he has not said anything unlike say Mumbai/Thane. Due to this sort of inconsistent and faulty reporting, any methodology taking these numbers as the base won’t yield good results for sure.
Agyaat opened to poor response of around 25-30%, the collection were better at some single screens but it will have to show huge improvement over the weekend if it is to make an impact at the box office. The reports are not that encouraging. Maharashtra and CP Berar will probably show best business.
Tere Sang also opened in the 25-30% range. The youth could like the film to an extent but it will still be a tough task to score at the box office as it is starting from low base and improvement was minimal throughout Friday. Mumbai city will probably have best business.
Love Aaj Kal has had a huge first week of around 42 crore nett. The collections in multiplex dominated areas like Mumbai, Delhi/NCR and Bangalore are humungous. Single screens are lower but have still managed decent to good first business. The eighth day has seen a fall in collections and seems like second week is heading for around 65% drop but due to first week the film will still emerge the biggest hit of 2009.
Luck dropped heavily in week two with a 3.75 crore nett gross and its two week total is around 20-50 crore. FLOP
Eros International, the leading London-listed Indian media and entertainment company has announced an unprecedented opening for Imtiaz Ali’s Love Aaj Kal – an Illuminati Films production in association with Eros International.
Eros International released the film worldwide on July 31, 2009 and the film has since grossed Rs 108 crore in its first week, making it the highest grosser of the year with over Rs 75 crore coming from India (Rs 45 crore net).
Love Aaj Kal enjoyed a wide release with approximately 1,200 prints and released in 1,800 plus screens worldwide and saw screenings as early as 7.30 am IST in certain multiplexes in India, making it one of the most anticipated films in recent times. The film’s staggering first week gross collections have made it one of the biggest ever openings for a Hindi film in India as well as overseas. With as many as 20–22 shows planned daily at some multiplexes, Eros International is looking forward to an excellent run of the film.
Expressing delight at the film’s performance over the week, Nandu Ahuja, Sr VP – Distribution – India, Eros International, said, “We are ecstatic with the audience as well as critics’ reactions to Love Aaj Kal. It was one of the most awaited films of the year and we are thrilled that our first venture with Illuminati Films have proven to be such a huge success. The superb run of the film in the first week has superseded all expectations and we are expecting the film to continue its excellent performance in the coming weeks as well. The Raksha Bandhan holiday greatly helped boost up admissions mid week.”
Pranab Kapadia, President – Distribution – Europe and Africa, Eros International adds, “Love Aaj Kal has performed incredibly well in all the overseas markets making this one of the biggest Bollywood films internationally. We were expecting a commercial success but this kind of response has been overwhelming with all major markets indicating remarkable box office results.”
With the film opening in cinemas in India to a fantastic 95–100 per cent capacity audiences and maintaining a steady 60–70 per cent from Monday, Love Aaj Kal promises to be the biggest film of recent times.
Love Aaj Kal took a heavy fall at Indore multiplexes on its eighth day. The collections were 79% lower than last Friday Below are the Friday figures and last Friday figures in brackets for Love Aaj Kal.

Love Aaj Kal RNBDJ Singh Is Kinng First Week Comparison
Below is a first week comparison between last week’s release Love Aaj Kal with Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and Singh Is Kinng. All three film’s have business in the same range with Love Aaj Kal coming out on top as it had an advantage of a holiday in week one.
Q. How much business do you think Kaminey will do in week week one?
A. The week depends on how well the film sustains from Monday onwards but weekend business can be around 20 crore nett which would be amongst top ten openings and Shahid Kapoor’s biggest opener.
Yash Jarkani
Q. What percentage of a film’s recovery comes from India and Overseas?
A. It depends on the film but normally for big budget films the expectations are 45% from India, 20% from Overseas and 35% from Satellite, Home Video, Music and other revenue.
Surendra Aujla
Q. Why is it that Love Aaj Kal took one of the biggest openings ever?
A. There were many reasons. Imtiaz Ali’s last film Jab We Met is a mega blockbuster on Satellite and Home Video so the public were eagerly awaiting his next film, it also had the YRF type Punjabi flavour which normally means huge business in the North and Overseas, the music was huge and it had great promotion and the film also had two popular stars in Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone. Then on top it was a holiday week with no competition when meant everything came together for the film.
M Siddique
Q. My Name Is Khan has been give to Fox Star Studio so that it can go further than the NRI market overseas, can this really happen?
A. It’s a tough task, My Name Is Khan will probably do record business overseas but it will be because of NRI’s. It will be very difficult to make any impact in the mainstream overseas markets.
Agyaat and Tere Sang both of which releases last Friday could make no impact at the box office. Agyaat started slowly and collections did not improve over the weekend. Some single screens showed better collections in comparison to multiplexes but not high enough to alter the fate of the film.
Tere Sang also started slowly and showed slight improvements at multiplexes on Saturday and Sunday. But again the pick up was not big enough to make much difference to the box office outcome of the film.
Both films fill struggle to find screen space next week as two big films in Kaminey and Life Partner are due for release.
Love Aaj Kal has collected 43 crore approx in week one. The distributor share is around 22.50 crore. Below are the collections from major cities around India.
Based on collections I think 42-43 is a good estimate. More likely on lower end as it didn’t do better business in small centers compared to say Kambakkht Ishq.
Mumbai and Delhi numbers are fantastic. Punjab centers are big too. Kolkata and Hyderabad are bit on the lower side, not as good as the rest. Looks comfortably well over 40cr.
Rab Ne had 23.32cr distributor share in the first week, BOI has 22.5cr for LAK which is like 52% of the nett.
It seems BOI have directly calculated 52.5 % of the total nett taking in to consideration the 2.5 % bonus from Multiplex chain..What about collections from other multiplex chains (outside that 6 multiplexes) and single screens…??

How Much Business Can Kaminey Do In Week One?

Agyaat And Tere Sang Struggle At The Box Office
Agyaat and Tere Sang both of which releases last Friday could make no impact at the box office. Agyaat started slowly and collections did not improve over the weekend. Some single screens showed better collections in comparison to multiplexes but not high enough to alter the fate of the film.
Tere Sang also started slowly and showed slight improvements at multiplexes on Saturday and Sunday. But again the pick up was not big enough to make much difference to the box office outcome of the film.
Both films fill struggle to find screen space next week as two big films in Kaminey and Life Partner are due for release.

Som,
It seems BOI have directly calculated 52.5 % of the total nett taking in to consideration the 2.5 % bonus from Multiplex chain..What about collections from other multiplex chains (outside that 6 multiplexes) and single screens…??
Have all contributed 52.5% of DS??

KI – 2345.06 lac
LAK – 3096.85 lac (Another 3.81 crore reported but no comparison)
Direct Ratio (best case – As LAK did better in reported centers, smaller centers KI was better)
KI/LAK = 0.757240422
if KI 33 Crore
LAK 43.58 Crore
Average Ratio of remaining centers 0.85 [It should more likely like 0.80 because Pune and some big centers were not compared]
Remaining KI 9.55 crore
Remaining LAK 11.23
LAK 41.20
