I was going to write this piece when PARTNER first released, however thought it might be too soon just incase Govinda didn’t get signed up for any more films (though I knew in my heart that with PARTNER Govinda was BACK…and with a bang!).

lifepartner4 A much expected comeback…

With PARTNER Govinda proved that he still had his hands on the audiences pulse as far as comedy (and also the box-office) was concerned. Yes, before PARTNER, there was BHAAGAM BHAG which had Akshay Kumar and Paresh Rawal as it’s main stars. Though with BHAAGAM BHAG, one clearly felt director Priyadarshan had Govinda regulated to the backseat as his regulars Akshay and Paresh (the new kings of comedy no doubt) held the centre-stage.

PARTNER had Govinda with David Dhawan doing what he does best-unmatched and unbeatable comic timing with hilarious dialogues and facial expressions to have you in splits.

And with the promo’s of his latest films dong the rounds (and both touted to be huge hits) it’s without a shred of doubt that Govinda is back!

Rumi Jaffery’s LIFE PARTNER has him in the main role with Fardeen Khan and Tusshar Kapoor in there for good measure. Genelia D’Souza and Prachi Desai finish the rest of the cast in what looks to be a clean comedy with a stable story line. The promos have been received well all over too. Granted, it does clash with Vishal Bharadwaj’s much awaited KAMINEY, however the films are as diverse as chalk and cheese and both in my view will be able to hold their own (specially given AGYAAT and TERE SANNG have just hit the dust).

doknotdisturb3 A much expected comeback…

His other release is however much more awaited as it pairs up Govinda with David Dhawan minus Salman Khan. This in my view is a true “test”as such for the Govinda-Dhawan team who in their prime gave back to back blockbusters (and at their worst gave some duds too).

Aside from Govinda there is Ritiesh Deshmukh who stars here again after LIFE PARTNER. I must add this might end up being a potent comedy duo that no-one expected. Ritiesh is without a doubt fantastic when it comes to playing the side-kick in comic movies. He shares superb chemistry with almost all the co-stars he’s worked with (specially in comedy) and together with Govinda this maybe the comic dhamaka no one expected. There’s also Sohail Khan, Sushmita Sen, Lara Dutta and Ranvir Shourie. The promos again have had the audiences in splits and I have no doubts this is going to be a riot.

However aside from these two comedies, Govinda also has Mani Rathnam’s RAAVAN where he has a serious role. The last time Govinda did a total and complete serious role was in N.Chandra’s SHIKHAAR where he played a psychopathic killer. It’s a pity that Govinda was later labelled as a “comedy king” as he is an extremely versatile actor who is capable of much much more. Granted Rathnams RAAVAN stars heavyweights like Abhishek Bachchan, Vikram, Ashwariya Rai Bachchan and many others, but like Mithun in GURU, I feel this will be a stand-out role and performance from Govinda..

However if you think that’s all then you’ve been mistaken, apart from the three films above Govinda also has:

FAME directed by Tigmanshu Dhuilia and co-starring Kay Kay Menonn and Sunil Shetty.

BANDHA YEH BINDAAS HAI directed by Ravi Chopra and co-starring Lara Dutta, Taboo and Ashish Chaudhury. The film is a remake of MY COUSIN VINNY.

RUN BHOLA RUN co-starring Tusshar Kapoor, Amisha Patel and Celina Jaitley.

CON FLICK directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia and co-starring Jimmy Shergill and Rimmi Sen.

LOOT co-starring Mimoh Chakraborthy and Hansika Motwani

CHAI GARAM directed by Aditya Datt with Celina Jaitley, Esha Deol and Sunil Shetty.

NAUGHTY @ FORTY directed by Jag Mundhra is a remake of THE FORTY YEAR-OLD VIRGIN and co-stars Ayesha Takia.

Lastly, MAIN AUR MRS KHANNA with Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor also has Govinda…

And who would’ve thought that this man was having trouble finding work a few years back? Like I said, Govinda is BACK! I just hope he maintains his career well this time…
