One line review: Pretty good, for people who are tuned to ‘Being in love’. An OK-OK fare for rest.
Plot: Mira and Jai want to break up with mutual consent. They are quite practical and logical about it — For them future and career priorities are important. Love can happen anytime. They reason out that with all the means of communication around them there could not possibly miss each other. They even keep calling one another to update progress in getting the other out of their love life. The trouble is they aren’t able to. They get entangled in to a complex loopy situation of trying to move on and pretending to have found someone else. The loop goes on till both realise that they are messed up without each other.
There is a parallel track of another love story set in 1965, which seems ridiculously impractical to the current generation protagonist. In the past, the hurdles to the affairs of the heart, had been society, family and stuff like that. In a rather simple way, the lovers of the then generation had known to follow their heart. While the current generation seems to think more on materialistic terms. The current issues are those of the mind — logical thinking, fast life, presence of other alternatives like social networks and dating opportunities. So its all easy to fall out of love. The idea of the movie is to prove this point of view wrong.True love exist, however insanely impractical it sounds. And in spite of changing times, Love over the years has not changed much.
Performances: Deepika shines – Literally and Physically. Saif seems effortless as usual. Rishi Kappor rocks. One scene appearance of Neetu Singh got the wows. Music is good. Imitiaz Ali has done it yet again. He is fast becoming a brand. The audienece loved the movie. Can say by the fact that no one left while the title credits song was on.
Glitches: Low of Entertainment value, high on emotional quotient (though in a very practical and non-melodramatic way) which leaves the logical and cynical lot unimpressed (but, why did they turn up to watch a romantic movie in the first place?). In the end one has to agree that this isn’t as entertaining as Jab We Met . Saif seems a bit stiff at places.
There cannot be other reasons for not liking the movie. At most one might not like the genre itself.
My Rating: 3.5. Far better the brainless comedies.
