On the whole, LUCK rides on star power, adrenaline-pumping thrills and a concept that’s novel for the Indian screens. Despite some loose ends, these three factors primarily would ensure a Lucky journey at the box-office.
Luck is a feast for adrenaline pumping edge of the seat cinema lovers. It is one of the slickest action thrillers to hit Indian screens. Action fans should not miss it.
I was never interested in the film, couple of my friends forced, so went and found it a pure garbage. This is just a terribly terribly made film.Drawing inspirations from films like Death Race and French film 13 Tzameti, it is just a poor compilation of one stunt after another.
Not a single performance worth talking about.Shruti Hassan looked pretty but her acting and dialogue delivery are embarrassingly bad.
“The film has been released on 976 prints in India [343 physical prints and 633 digital prints] in 1,150 screens. In Overseas, it has been released n 134 prints on 150 screens. The worldwide print count is 1,110 in 1,300 screens”
That suggests that digital prints are shared on some screens.
Jashn is a gone case. KI seems to have done around 2cr in its 3rd week.Mumbai numbers are complete this time. NY is stable, has shown around 50% fall in the 4th week.
Luck opened to a mixed response with single screens being strong and multiplexes on the lower side. The reports are also mixed and as its multiplex business is the lower side the film will find it difficult to be a major success but if single screens can sustain it can emerge an average earner.
Jashnn managed to gross around 2.25 cr nett in its first weekend. The producers will lose a small amount as they had sold the film to distributors around India and will have revenue from Music, Satellite and Home Video but the distributors will lose around 70% of their investments. DISASTER
Short Kut dropped badly with 1.25 crore nett business in week two Its two week total is around 8 crore nett. DISASTER
Kambakkht Ishq manages 2.50 crore nett business in week three takings its three week business to around 45 crore nett. ABOVE AVERAGE
New York is still steady with 2.25 crore nett business in week four. Its four week total is around 44 crore nett. HIT
ONCE UPON A TIME IN OUR CINEMA, dialogue was as much a draw as the names above the marquee – partly due to writers who knew how to shape words into potent weapons, and partly due to one-of-a-kind actors who seized these weapons and went in for the kill. We had the masochistic mumblings of Dilip Kumar, who was forever waging war with the dealings of destiny. There was, then, the memorable eccentricity of Raaj Kumar, whose mode of oratory was apparently to close his eyes and pick out phrases at random that he could lavish love on. Even during the seventies, performers like Shatrughan Sinha and Amitabh Bachchan found interesting things to do with dialogue – the former would coat his lines with the mild contempt of someone too cool for the rest of the world, while the latter was the opposite, simmering with the self-deprecatory rage of the desperately uncool.
This style of speaking is a lost art today because we have little time for poetry in our prosaic modern lives. We’ve gotten so used to zeroing in directly on the point – especially in the age of the SMS – that windy circumlocutions instantly make us roll our eyes and reach for the remote. So at least for this reason, the director Soham Shah deserves a mild nod of appreciation – for his Luck is filled with dialogue that’s been painstakingly worked on, sometimes excessively so. The enormous problem, though, is that none of the actors knows anything about owning a line and delivering it in a fashion that makes it theirs and theirs alone. When a low-rent Lothario woos a girl with a diamond, he insinuates that only her fingers can transform the rock into a ring. (“Sirf aap ki ungliyan is paththar ko angoothi ka darja de sakti hain.”)
But when these words fall from the lips of Ravi Kishan, we don’t swoon – we smirk, we shrink back. Elsewhere, Mithun Chakraborty walks up to Danny Denzongpa and announces, “Mujhe paison ki zaroorat hai,” and the latter replies (in rhyme!), “Mujhe tujh jaison ki zaroorat hai.” (The former needs some money; the latter needs such men.) On and on it goes – with every character spouting the most florid prose, as if, to the last man, they just exited a screening of Mughal-e-Azam and were freshly inspired to put a metrical spin on the most mundane of thoughts. (And with every other utterance bearing fortune-cookie philosophy about the phenomenon of luck, the film breaks some kind of record on the number of lines devoted to kismat, taqdeer and other variants.) Even the occasional English dialogue groans with gassiness. (“Dying men should learn to make peace with silence.”)
Why burden this film, a trashy thriller, with declamatory aspiration? I wish Shah had chosen the visual route instead, as with an early scene where a car window rolls down and what’s revealed isn’t a face but a languid puff of cigarette smoke. That’s the kind of empty style that could have made at least a guilty pleasure of this tale of luck-invested superbeings (Imran Khan, Shruti Haasan, Chitrashi Rawat) deposited in a life-threatening Survivor-style showdown. It might have helped if, between all the talking, there were some genuine thrills – but not even saw-toothed sharks come close to adding a jolt to the proceedings. You can see what Imran Khan is trying here – shake off, with stubbled resolve, that cutie-pie lover-boy image from Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na – but will someone please tell him that the faux-testosterone swagger of Kidnap and Luck is hardly the solution?
Rangan has rightly pointed out the problems with the “dialogues” in the film, even if he has somehow appreciated Soham in this aspect. There is not any normal conversation as such in the film.
what all trade analysts are forgetting to mention is that good opening of Luck in Bihar and UP is mainly because of Ravi Kishen. He is a Huge star there thanks to his string of Bhojpuri Hits. Luck remained below par over the weekend at Indore multiplexes with Sunday showing the best collections. Below are The Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Total figures for Luck at Indore multiplexes.
Q. Is New York the biggest hit of John Abraham’s career?
A. New York is the biggest grosser of his career and along with Dhoom is the biggest hit of his career. Coincidently both films are from the YRF Banner.
Ritesh Kumar
Q. How would you compare the openings of Kidnap and Luck?
A. Kidnap did have a better opening than Luck which may have been because it was released in a holiday week. Kidnap fell badly after the first weekend and it remains to be see how Luck goes.
Mohan K
Q. How much distributor share did Kambakkht Ishq need to be a hit?
A. Around 30 crore.
Kamal Asif
Q. What are the expectations for Love Aaj Kal in terms of opening and total business?
A. The film is a sure shot and should become the biggest grosser and hit of 2009 and opening week will also be huge and may even hit 35 crore nett with business in Punjab and Delhi/NCR being humungous due to the local flavour of the film.
“Around 30 crore.”
hmm add another 13 crore from overseas. If budget was 62 then another 19+ crore left to account for with music, DVD and satellite rights. I believe definition of hit has changed to recuperate your investment?
I am not sure if BOI meant 30cr distributor share to be a Hit by taking into consideration each and every source of revenue. If we start taking revenue from every sources available, then no film would be a flop.BOI probably would have meant this vis-a-vis distribution cost in India. I don’t exactly know how they calculate the distribution cost in India when a film’s worldwide rights get sold at a certain price?!
Luck has managed to gross around 12 crore nett in its opening weekend. The film performed better at single screens than the multiplexes but even single screen business was best on day one.
The film showed improvement at multiplexes on Sunday only to show a fall in collections on Monday. Overall the performance is below par for the weekend and the weekdays do not offer much hope as collections have fallen on Monday.
The first week should settle at around 16-17 crore nett business. The film does not have much chance to cover its costs.
Soham Shah’s Luck has been really fortunate to be saved by the single screen audience, especially in the Northern states, since it has opened to a lukewarm response in the multiplexes. The other two releases of the week, the Indo-American venture Perfect Mismatch has opened on a luckless note where as Hollywood film Night At The Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian has opened to an above average response across India.
BO Collections
Sanjay Dutt-Imran Khan-Shruti Haasan starrer action thriller Luck opened with 1110 prints across the world. Its first day opening was a poor 20-30 per cent in the multiplexes, especially in Mumbai. But in the single screens Luck managed to salvage some pride for its makers. The first show opening was 70 per cent and by day end it was running housefull in most centers.
It is high time that some of the trade analysts settle down to give verdicts after 3-4 weeks only.
It will save them the blushes of coming down from hit to semi-hit to average. But then most of these sites are paid hefty amounts of money for online promotion, thus they are eager to call it a quick hit and then backtrack to save their credibility.
Another problem with trade verdicts are the numerous senseless classifications they come up with – below average, below hit, above average, above flop and what not.
Either a movie is a flop or average runner or a hit/superhit/blockbuster. The use of prefixes to any of these classifications is prety idiotic – tomorrow someone will label Tasveer as below-flop, CCTC as anti-hit and blah blah.
Also with these package deals coming in, there is a thin line between an average runner and a flop – most of the times producers make money, while the corporate struggles to recover their investment. Which makes the most commonly used term ’success’ the most vague one.
On paper, the project [LUCK] looks fetching. Actors Sanjay Dutt, Imran Khan, Shruti Haasan, Mithun Chakraborty, Danny Denzongpa and Chitrashi, director Soham Shah, music composers Salim-Sulaiman, cinematographer Santosh Thundiyil, sound designer Dwarak Warrier and action director Allan Amin… a top of the line cast and crew.
The pre-release promotion was befitting the film of this stature. In fact, the Mehtas of Shree Ashtavinayak Cinevision ensured that the stylish promos sent out right signals to the audiences. Industry experts predicted a 70% + start for this action-thriller, but were in for a rude shock as the Friday number trickled in.
The question is, why didn’t LUCK open to an overwhelming response, despite everything in its favour? Various theories have sprung up since Friday and one of them attributes the slow start to the thanda outcome to Sanju-Imran’s first film together KIDNAP, which is fresh in public memory.
“The question is, why didn’t LUCK open to an overwhelming response, despite everything in its favour? ” Everything going in its favour? Says who? soham had madea very average film in Kaal inspite of Dharma backing him. DSanjay and Imran had done a bomb called Kidnap last, Shruti is no great shakes. Music was below average. The promos looked very cheesy, and promised a lame film. Any surprise that the audience stayed away?

LAK is indeed having a large number of plex shows … just checked the Inox site for show-listings.
Luck is going to manage very few shows in second week … while NY and KI are being pushed out of theaters.
