Mumbai: No one sells like Shah Rukh Khan in Bollywood. Even before the release of ‘My Name is Khan’, his film is being seen as a hit considering the hype surrounding every little detail of the film.

Latest news has it that Fox Star Studio has reportedly bought the rights of the film for a whopping Rs 100 crores! Added to this, the film is said to be rich on music side as well with songs having chartbusting potential.
Critics, who have seen the rushes of MNIK, were overwhelmed by what they saw and heard. They were all praises for the trio of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, the music composers and director Karan Johar.

‘My Name is Khan’ has been in news for all the right reasons. Super hit onscreen couple SRK and Kajol will be seen together after a long time. Written by Shibani Bathija, the film is about a Muslim (Shah Rukh) who suffers from the Asperger syndrome, a form of autism that impacts social interaction abilities, and he is arrested as a suspected terrorist in post-9/11 Los Angeles after authorities mistake his disability for suspicious behaviour.

After distributing ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ in India, Fox Star Studio is hopeful about this much-awaited biggie which has all the potential to be a blockbuster.

Two questions come up in my mind. Does this include ALL rights, and is it even possible to recover this kind of money and make a profit in addition?

i think this is a steal. I believe this will be the biggest movie of SRK to date. This movie will gross about 60-80 cr abroad and net 100 +- 10 in India. btw – isnt it ironic this news comes out on the same day as the other one that says Kites has no buyers :-) .

Neelu – the 100 cr is for ALL rights .. not just theatrical revenue … thats what these package deals essentially are.

Tango Bhai and me were discussing the price of this biggies, and i guess no one was expecting it to be less than 100 cr … a SRK movie after a long gap is a big deal.

When Akshay’s movies are failing to recover investments of 75 cr … SRK movie is still getting 100 cr in such bad times … and I will be surprised if Fox does not end up with a neat profit on this … 100 cr for MNIK is cheap!

And yes its ironical, specially when Kites is failing to get any international distributors … but i also feel Roshans are being too greedy with Kites … they got the movie sold to Reliance for a good amount of 100 cr+ … why be so desperate to get some more from international buyers? They are unlikely to have invested anything more than 50-60 cr in the movie as budget.

Yes neelu, usually these deals include all rights.

100 cr is recoverable but the movie needs to be huge, as beld pointed out.

Also i would like to add that these deals are made by corporates even sometimes knowing there will be losses, its more of an effort to gain ground in new territory.

So as much value i didnt give to KI 62 cr, i will not give much importance to 100 cr MNIK.

MNIK is a biggie in all sense, the budget will be humongous( going by KJO standards, 50 cr atleast).

But this adds an extra pressure too but i guess it the nature of the beast.

I am happy about ONE thing. Finally there will be a SRK film with decent DVDs – EROS is the crappiest DVD producer ever, they manage to destroy even the Blu-Ray format.

It is true according to all reports Doga. Mostly it is coming from the casting extras used in the California shoot. I think the US parts will be extensively in English and it will hurt the film in India, but at least it will be true to the setting.

I dont think its just about the money, its about the reach.International buyers, like MNCs, have much bigger market reach.Had RR found one,Kites would have got a really big platform to soar but it was not to be.

Neelu, contrary to what you think, I beleive this movie has tremendous pontential not in India alone but lot of other non-english speaking contries as well.

The way I see it, “Khan Naam Hai Mera” has much much wider audience and universal theame than any other forthcoming movie.

    Comment Arrow

Agree on the universal theme Ritz. But the bigger point is Karan has to make it believable so that it can connect the audiences at an emotional level. This requires a well thought out and well realized screenplay. It’s not a film where you would have the luxury to put random songs, random jokes/gags (I don’t mean humor) in between to make it a so called “crowd pleaser” because that may just take away the seriousness and genuineness of the issue the film is interested to deal with.

MY NAME IS KHAN audio in the news already!

It was way back in June 2008 when we had told you about the chartbusting potential and class of the audio album of the Karan Johar directed, Shahrukh Khan-Kajol starrer, MY NAME IS KHAN. We had broken the news about the scratch tunes of two background scores, one of which was then titled ”Sajda” and was to be rendered by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. Whether the title of the song has remained ”Sajda” or not, is not confirmed but yes, our US based sources confirm that Rahat has indeed rendered the song and it has already been picturised on SRK and Kajol.

In fact, a well known critic (print and broadcast media) who has recently seen the rushes of MNIK and also heard the songs was overwhelmed by what he saw and heard. He was all praises for the trio of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, the music composers of MY NAME IS KHAN.

Well, we are not surprised; keeping in mind the excellent audio track record of the SRK-Karan team and KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI, KABHI KHUSHI KABHIE GHAM, KAL HO NAA HO and KABHI ALVIDA NAA KEHNA are standout examples of that!

While still on MNIK, it is believed that Fox Studio has picked up the worldwide rights of the film for Rs. 100 crores.

That would be a welcome change on the part of Karan, Neelu. Anyway those are some of the concerns I have with My Name Is Khan.I’ll be glad if he sticks to what he has been saying all along about My Name Is Khan. This is completely a new territory for Karan, if he succeeds, he can only get better.I am sure Karan would not have been too happy with what he could manage with Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna,he some how could not really translate what he had visualized in his mind which he himself has admitted in few interviews that he could have done a lot better.I second to that.”Sexy Sam” character to me was one of the loose, contrived ends in the film. Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna with out “Sexy Sam” and the typical Karan Joharish exuberance and grandeur would have been a much better film.Hopefully Karan has learnt from his mistakes, does not repeat them in My Name Is Khan.

My feeling is that both Kites and 3 Idiots will be moderate hits, while My name is Khan may become bigger hit than these two.Mind you, this is box office prospect talk–not critical consideration–which to me, seems as important as box office–but that’s just me. Even fans seem more interested in box receipts– judging by the talk here.
Obviously the stars and producers involved–these people would seem to prefer their film s to be firstly BO hits and then critical success as an addon. I hope they don’t think that way–but considering the amounts involved–I suppose money returns matter more.
Critically–I’m expecting, hoping Hirani’s film will be a topper, even if it doesn’t top Box office. Problem is, not much has been revealed about this film, except for the fact that it is based on the characters from 5 point someone.

My name is Khan looks like a winner in every way, considering the reports streaming in all over the media.

Kites looks like a winner for three reasons–Hritik returns after a long time, the girls Barbara and Kangana and finally Rakesh Roshan’s cinema history.

My final evaluation, at this point–
    MNIK–Blockbuster.
    Kites–super hit.
    3Idiots–hit,if lucky, superhit.
