Gorilla

Gorillas are the largest of the living primates. They are ground-dwelling herbivores that inhabit the forests of Africa. Gorillas are divided into two species and (still under debate as of 2008) either four or five subspecies. The DNA of gorillas is 98%–99% identical to that of a human, and they are the next closest living relatives to humans after the two chimpanzee species.......To cut a long story short, I am the kaala bander residing inside YOU!

Taran gives it a Semi Hit status. This is indeed creditable as the movie can only get better tags from here. Even Semi-Hit will be considered good considering the -ve media review. Nonetheless a good success for Akshay.

And what a joker taran is! ” Akshay-Kareena’s top notch performances” ? That’s a first I am hearing about this film.

All in all if KI is a semi-hit, Mangal Pandey is a super-hit!

    Post Hera Pheri phase:

Some of Akshay starrer comedies that was immesnely liked/loved by most are-

    1. Hera Pheri
    2. Awara Paagal Deewana
    3. Garam Masala
    4. Welcome
    5. Mujhse Shaadi Karogi

Some that are just about liked by most are
    6. Phir Hera Pheri
    7. Deewane Hue Paagal (This is the only non-certified Hit in he list)

Some that left a lot to be desired are
    8. SIK
    9. KI
    10. Heyy Babyy
    11. Bhaagam Bhaag

Other Akshay starrers in non-comedy(compared to above movies) that are noteworthy and immensely liked are
    12. Khakee
    13. Aitraaz
    14. Dhadkan
    15. Waqt
    16. Namaste London
    17. Bhool Bhulaiya

Films in which only Akshay’s role was appreciated though in entirety the film was rejected:

    18. Tashan
    19. Family
    20. Insaan
    21. CCTC

The above list shows why Akshay gets huge opening for his films. The goodwill that his image has created in last 6-7 years ensures that a not so liked movie like KI or SIK also emerges as a success.

My personal favorites in the Akki comedy list are Mujhse Shaadi Karogi and Hera Pheri. I thought he was quite zany in the former. I am glad to see you mention Awaara Paagal Deewana, as I preferred him in this film to many of the more successful films. [I have never cared much for any Anees Bazmee film, although Welcome did have one hilarious scene when akshay touches the gangster after his henchman dares him re: bhai ko koi unglee bhi nahin lagaa sakta etc. Plus climax was funny.] But I like the best of the non-comedy films (referring to akshay’s role here) — Khakee, Tashan, Insaan — more than any of the others. There is a winning down to earth vibe in the roles in Khakee or Amjad rickshawalla that I miss in these comedies, especially the more recent ones. Tashan was a great combination of the “earlier” akshay and the “later” huge star akshay, all in a populist package. Plus the get up was excellent too, and the entry scene one of the best scenes of that year.

BTW, you left out Jaaneman and Aan…

If it was meant to be taken seriously, a publication like Times would quote reported by whom and would also take the trouble to verify the ‘reportedly’.

Akshay touching gangster scene was a riot. :)
I feel In Welcome the most interesting narrative was the Mauritius trip. The whole half an hour episode is a laugh riot apart from having ‘eek oonchaa lamba kad’ song. Bazmee films have such episodes that can be seen and enjoyed as separate half an hour comedy circus. Quick Character building is his forte as he can introduce a character and get a laugh out from it from the same scene.

MUMBAI: Bollywood’s 5-year report card brings to light that its five musketeers-Aamir Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, Hrithik Roshan and
Salman Khan-have together netted a business of approximately Rs 1,830 crore from the ticket windows alone. And, if you add the revenue from satellite, home-video and other mediums to this figure, you can easily see why these men are on top.

The year 2009 didn’t start auspiciously for the superstar brigade- Shah Rukh had a lukewarm Billu Barber while Akshay had two duds (Chandni Chowk to China and 8 x 10 Tasveer) and one uncertified Kambakht Ishq- but Bollywood continues to rely heavily on these stars.

It’s easy to explain why. Trade sources estimate a total of Rs 500 crore came from Akshay’s 17 releases in the five year-period from 2004 to 2008, Rs 400 crore from Shah Rukh’s nine releases, Rs 365 crore from Aamir’s five releases, Rs 350 crore from from Salman Khan’s 13 releases and Rs 215 crore from Hrithik’s three films.

Trade analyst Komal Nahata says, “Despite these actors’ ups and downs, Bollywood depends a lot on these five men because they have a fairly high success ratio. You have to go by aggregates; individual films may run or flop, but these men net good averages. Akshay leads the pack with his earnings by virtue of the fact that he has done the maximum number of films.”

This year, too, he has had three releases; Shah Rukh has had only one release and Aamir is yet to open his account. Hrithik was seen in a cameo in Luck By Chance.

However, when it comes to rating the five men, Nahata says, “Aamir and Shah Rukh are neck to neck at number 1 and Hrithik and Akshay share the number 2 spot. Salman currently occupies a solo place at number three because he hasn’t had a spectacular release after Partner.”

Trade consultant Amod Mehra, however, disagrees, “Aamir is a clear number 1 because each of his films in the last five years has been different.” Pointing out that Mangal Panday was the only flop in Aamir’s bouquet of five; Mehra says that the actor’s other four films-Rang De Basanti, Fanaa, Taare Zameen Par and Ghajini-made a killing at the box office.

“Shah Rukh is a close second, Hrithik is third, Akshay is fourth and Salman stands at the fifth position. However, a hit or two here and there and these positions could easily change,” he adds.

Ashok Ahuja of Percept Picture Company feels Shah Rukh and Aamir are tied at number 1. “It was hard to choose between Ghajini and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. Both the films rocked. Hrithik

is number 2, Akshay is number 3 and Salman is at number 4. The kind of excitement generated by Three Idiots, My Name Is Khan and Kites is palpable even though their release dates are yet to be set; the euphoria associated with Aamir, Shah Rukh and Hrithik is very high,” says Ahuja.

Says Prabhat Choudhury of marketing agency Spice that these five men, apart from films, have also taken over the endorsement world because of their high brand value. “Aamir leads the pack because he brings to the table qualities of a discerning thinking actor, who is very sincere and sensitive whereas Shah Rukh’s strong point is that he is entertaining and charming,” Choudhury said.

    Working out the averages:

    Akshay : 500/17: 29.41
    Sharukh: 400/9: 44.4
    Amir: 365/5: 73
    Salman: 350/13: 26.9
    Hritik: 215/3: 71.6

So it’s Amir and Hritik, close. If you take the average of industrywall’s ratings it is Amir, Shahrukh, Hritik, Akshay, Salman.

Gorilla’s waani – With NG’s popularity growing and KI’s resounding success all over, media has now taken the success of KI as granted and has shunned the numerological theory of anti-KI.

hey gor…a bhai. if it ends with 50-55 – its not even a hit yaar. I think hey baby did 50+ 2-3 years ago. This is a flop in my book for distributors. Akshay should think about a sabbatical. I think if he gets back after 2-3 years – there will be a market for cheesy movies again – though going by how Imran is choosing his movies – he may replace akshay very soon as the cheese king ;-)

agree. KI is just a semi Hit – above average fare. The semi hit tag comes because it has done well (though not as well as what it seemed earlier) in certain pockets (North India) and overseas while in other centers it has done average business. It is disappointing considering the hype, but a success considering the post release events.
I also feel that there is variable cost (for producers, distributors and exhibitors) involved in movies nowadays. For e.g. star’s fee and distributor’s share(Akshay has mentioned this many time) is more BO oriented. This makes the actual cost lower than what gets widely reported.
In KI’s case figures for week 1 came from EROS who is distributor.
