Qalandar

I promise somewhat irregular posts on (in no particular order) Indian politics, cinema, and anything else that catches my fancy... Why "Qalandar"? So-called "liminal" religious traditions are a particular interest of mine, and "qalandar" is the sort of untranslatable, ambiguous, yet enormously evocative word that for me touches upon and articulates the experience of the sub-continent's "little" traditions in a particularly memorable way...not to mention the fact that in popular lingo the word has more than a merely religious/spiritual connotation, and can mean a bunch of other things, including a smart alec, wannabe, what-have-you...

q – nicely written. i saw this movie with lot of expectations as it came highly recommended. I was a little disappointed with the movie tho – its not a bad movie – but i didnt find it great either. I somehow thought this was a cross between gautham menon and bala kind of filmmaking – one entertaining/thrilling and the other a little stark/morbid. On the whole – a good watch though – but definitely a video watch as the movie is just way too long..

Thanks guys — agree this is definitely not the classic a lot of people said it was, but personally, I would have liked to watch it in the cinema had a subtitled version been playing near me…
