Their last outing together was a damp squib, but Karan Johar hasn’t lost his faith in Shah Rukh Khan. He has once again teamed up with him and Kajol for “My Name Is Khan” and says the superstar is not only good at emoting but is capable of directing a film too.
“He had written reams of notes on how he wanted to interpret his character (in ‘My Name Is Khan’). And to him it was no big deal. He’s ready to direct a film any time. He will be outstanding at it,” Karan, whose last directorial venture “Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna” fell flat at the box office, told IANS in an interview.
For “My Name Is Khan”, Karan is bringing Shah Rukh and Kajol together on screen after a long time and he says they bring out the best in him.
“I’m blessed to have them in my film. I don’t know what it is about them. It’s just magic. They build an inexplicable energy on screen. When I direct a scene with Shah Rukh and Kajol, I know I’m doing my best work,” he said.
“My Name Is Khan” is about a Muslim who suffers from the Asperger syndrome, a form of autism that impacts social interaction abilities, and he is arrested as a suspected terrorist in post-9/11 Los Angeles after authorities mistake his disability for suspicious behaviour.

SRK’s role in last two Karan’s film KHNH and KANK had him with disabilty or disease. In MNIK too SRK has a disorder. I can already visualise him arguing with US policemen the way he did with Preity zinta in KANK. Someone doing only 1 film in 2 yrs should have taken something different.

Jokes apart, I have read it from fans on sets of MNIK that SRK was pretty much calling the shots. I guess SRK has ghost directed Karan’s film here and there. For example, all those basket ball scenes in KKHH were directed by SRK.

SRK might have the credits needed to be a director, no doubts.
But i think direction is a job about giving to others.
All these top stars have lived life on “I,ME,Myself”.
I will be shocked if any of these top stars become directors in the first place and then go on to cast another star of equal strature, thats just not possible.
A TZP is indeed possible.

Versatile I don’t think so,mediocre yes. At times I feel Karan should stick to what he does the best, where he can excel mainly the tearjerkers but at the very next moment I feel when someone is trying to get away from his usual stuff, don’t know how genuinely/sincerely he is interested or how far successful he would be in his attempt, lets just give the guy a chance.

The reason why KJO is trying his best to re-invent himself is that is is aware that his tear-jerkers like KKHH and K3G have lost their market today … if he sticks to those kind of cinema, it aint work.
But it remains to seen if he is versatile to re-invent himself. KANK didnt do much for him.

I mentioned versatile because he has dabbled in a lot of things. He is a director, a producer (and have heard has been successful at creating a great atmosphere on the sets and makes it a pleasure), a fashion designer also to some degree, has hosted a television show.
Som, I think its creditable that he is trying a different genre. It takes a lot of courage to try something different especially when you have been successful doing what you are best at.

Agree with akshay here…
I always believe Kjo is one of the most articulate personalities in BW ..He was very good as TV host ..Although he made some avg movies… His total BO contribution as director is approx 300 cr in 3 movies…Now thats a figure i dont believe any other director have..
KKHH was still entertaining..But i believe his confidence on Bacchans made K3G and KANK avg fares…

Well if he is a muslim,every chnace that he ‘ll be harassed in US,canada,UK,Australia or NZ…In india we are still a sensible lot…
One of my Muslim friend was harassed in NewZealand in 2007 just because he is a Muslim…He had to contact the Indian embassy there to get a certificate of innocence(Police records in India)
