Bizarre has a new meaning and it’s called KAMBAKKHT ISHQ.
Of late, Akshay Kumar has earned the reputation of making you laugh in film after film. You expect KAMBAKKHT ISHQ, his new outing, to transport you to ha-ha-land, given the smart-n-chic promos of the film.
KAMBAKKHT ISHQ belongs to the same family of films which have wooed the masses, such as MUJHSE SHAADI KAROGI, WELCOME, SINGH IS KINNG and GOLMAAL RETURNS. The prime motive is to entertain you for the next 2 hours, logic be damned.
Yet, KAMBAKKHT ISHQ is different because it depicts the battle of the sexes, a theme that’s rarely depicted on the Hindi screen. The lingo is poles apart, so is the attitude. In fact, this is a modern take on relationships, with the two hours divided between laughter and emotions, frivolous and reality.
Let’s get this straight. KAMBAKKHT ISHQ works in most parts thanks to the kind of star power and energy that the two actors pack in — Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor. It would’ve been difficult to hold the film from falling apart had the two actors not been competent enough to carry off their respective parts. Also, the presence of Hollywood stars — Sylvester Stallone, Brandon Routh and Denise Richards — the first on the Hindi screen, is an added bonus. 1 pe 2 ka offer; Bollywood stars ke saath Hollywood free!
The focus is on the entertainment quotient. There are moments when you laugh so uncontrollably that it gets embarrassing and there are times when you continue smiling, even during the most ordinary scenes.
But KAMBAKKHT ISHQ dips in its second hour because you expect it to be as frivolous as the first hour, but it changes tracks and gets emotional. Things would’ve gone wrong had the end stumbled and fumbled, but it doesn’t. The finale, in fact, takes the film back to the level that one expects from a film of this magnitude.
To sum up, KAMBAKKHT ISHQ offers you value for time and also, value for money. It offers loads of entertainment in those 2 + hours, loads of glamour in those 130 odd minutes, from start to end. Sure, there are blemishes, but they’re trivial when you look at the larger picture.
KAMBAKKHT ISHQ explores the relationship between two individuals who are as different as chalk and cheese. Viraj [Akshay Kumar] is a stuntman in Hollywood, who lives by the mantra ‘women are only good for two things’. Simrita [Kareena Kapoor] is a firebrand who is more than able to stare down the most arrogant male with her caustic wit and sardonic tongue.
So what happens when the two people who hate each other the most meet at Simrita’s best friend Kamini’s [Amrita Arora] and Viraj’s brother Lucky’s [Aftab Shivdasani] wedding? A wedding that both Viraj and Simrita are violently opposed to and desperate to stop. Sparks fly… the battle of the sexes in on.
Director Sabbir Khan’s motive is simple: Entertain for the next 2 hours. The entire first hour moves at a lightening speed, making you enjoy the war of words between Akshay and Kareena at regular intervals.
The first half abounds in terrific moments, but I’d like to single out at least three…
* One, the church wedding of Aftab and Amrita. When the battle lines are drawn.
* Two, the sequence at the operation table, when Akshay spots Kareena.
* Three, the interval point. The pendant connection. Howlarious sequences all!
The post-interval starts with a bang, with Akshay hearing the ‘Om Mangalam’ chant just about everywhere — while sleeping, in the shower, in the rest room, even at an award function. The award function sequence is a double whammy. You get to watch Stallone and also the scene is superbly structured, executed and enacted.
Things are smooth sailing till the emotional angle comes up. The narrative dips in those 20 odd minutes. The mood suddenly shifts from laughter to sadness. The makers may argue that a twist in the tale is justified from the writing point of view, since the emotional track is vital for any love story, but the fact remains that one does miss the entertainment quotient here. In fact, the dip in the second hour erodes, to a large extent, the impression that the first half had built so magnificently.
Director Sabbir Khan picks up a theme that may catch you by complete surprise, but marinates it in entertainment, garnishes it well and presents it like never before. The review would be incomplete if we failed to highlight the grandiose look and the lavish production values thanks to the no-holds-barred expenses by producer Sajid Nadiadwala. Each frame looks ostentatious and glitzy.
Music is up to the mark, with three interesting tracks — ‘Om Mangalam’ [RDB], ‘Lakh Lakh’ and ‘Bebo’ [Anu Malik]. Cinematography [Vikas Sivaraman] is magnificent, with the DoP doing complete justice to the production values.
KAMBAKKHT ISHQ belongs to both, Akshay and Kareena. Akshay is dynamic this time. He received a lot of flak for CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA and there was this nagging feeling that the negativity would spill over to KAMBAKKHT ISHQ. But Akshay is in terrific form here and delivers, without a shred of doubt, a bravura performance. If you loved him in NAMASTEY LONDON and SINGH IS KINNG, you’d fall in love with Akki and his comic timing all over again this time.
Kareena left an indelible impression in JAB WE MET and creates a similar impact, albeit in a different role. Her role has shades of ‘Poo’ in K3G, but the glam looks combined with that rare confidence takes this performance to dizzy heights. Clearly, Kareena is miles ahead of her contemporaries as far as talent goes and this film proves it yet again.
Aftab and Amrita are perfect for their parts. Vindu Singh supports well. Javed Jaffrey doesn’t make a mark because the role has no connection with the main plot. Kirron Kher is getting typecast. Boman Irani is hilarious in that lone sequence. Stallone, Brandon Routh and Denise Richards are well integrated in the narrative.
On the whole, KAMBAKKHT ISHQ will strike a chord with the youth and those who relish zany and madcap entertainers. The first half is tremendous, while the second half takes a dip, with the film picking up towards the climax. At the box-office, the film will see an earth-shattering opening weekend and a historic Week 1. It remains to be seen how this film fares in its second weekend/week, given the massive number of screens it has opened globally [2,000 +]. However, the timing is most appropriate [the viewer is thirsting for a biggie] and the hype is tremendous, which should prove very advantageous for the film.

Planet Bollywood:Kambakkht Ishq is a case of bling over substance, in this first directorial effort from Sabir Khan who also developed the screenplay for this vacuous romance. Filmed largely in Los Angeles and featuring Universal Studios, Rodeo Drive and Hollywood Boulevard – it’s more about Bollywood’s love affair with Hollywood than any thing involving the yawn-inducing protagonists

Expensive sets, 4 odd songs filled with babes from the west, a couple of great action sequences performed by the star himself, a super sexy co-star, funny one-liners and a story that completely lacks sense or logic

Watching the promos and the huge hype the makers have managed to create about their film, your expectation levels are high when you enter but as you come out you do feel that it is nothing more than a dumb entertainer that tries to take you too much for granted. It may take a great start at the box office but the crowds will vanish from Monday once the hype begins to settles down

BOI: Kambakkht Ishq Starts Strong On Huge Release
Kambakkht Ishq has had a great opening across the country this morning on a big release of over 1000 cinemas. The opening was extraordinary in the North with Aanam in Amritsar and Phul in Patiala going over capacity in the first shows. Multiplexes in Delhi/NCR were also super strong. The rest of the country was also excellent though not as strong as North. The weekend looks set to be huge and possibly the second biggest ever.
Kambakkht Ishq has been released on around 110 cinemas in Mumbai/Thane, 38 cinemas in Delhi city with total going to 70 in Delhi/NCR. East Punjab sees a 62 cinemas release and the film is showing on 29 cinemas in Hyderabad.

Kambakkht Ishq Recording Extraordinary Collections
Kambakkht Ishq is doing extraordinary business all over. The film started phenomenal in the North and excellent elsewhere but by afternoon and late afternoon shows the film is recording extraordinary collections practically all over the country.
The media reviews are negative on the film but the paying public seems to be giving it the thumbs up though Monday collections will give better idea of public response. The film has been running for a few shows as yet but at looking at the huge release and the collections so far the film looks set to cross the 25 and 26 crore nett weekend collections of Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and Singh Is Kinng respectively.
The record Friday to Sunday collections including paid previews of Ghajini were 32 crore nett and this target may be tougher to reach.

Shubhra Gupta talks about Kambakkht Ishq
LINK
‘Kambakkht Ishq’ aims at those who think from the groin, and hits the target unerringly: the hero and heroine of this heavily-publicised enterprise are eloquence personified— he is a dog, she is a bitch. And like best of the breed, they circle, ears pricked, tails raised, throats growling, noses sniffing, all ends up, down, and the middle.
For the record, he’s Viraj Sheirgill (Akshay), ace stuntman in Hollywood, who believes women are good for only “two things”.
She is Simrita Rai ( Kareena), an ultra-swish model, who is convinced men want only one thing. Uh oh, actually, no, she is a surgeon, who bares her pretties only to pay her way through med school. And the film is basically to do with two of them jousting to add up the numbers: will Akshay-the-sexist-so-and-so’s two match up to all-men-are-hateful Kareena’s one?
While they are at it, we are regaled with jokes to do with all parts of the human anatomy: Akshay’s butt is the butt of a long examination by a fat Black woman from which he emerges limply. Viagra is mixed in protein shakes. Fleshy parts above and below the midriff are shaken. And everything is stirred every once in a while with wiggly waists and slathery navels, as Akshay and Kareena do the doodah in Hollywood – him in some jaw-dropping stunts, and her in seriously clingy sheaths and gravity-defying Jimmy Choos.
n all this, there’s the vaunted Hollywood brigade consisting of a pouchy-eyed Sylvester who’s made to fight off thugs, Bollywood-style, and hand out a trophy to our home-grown stuntman. Denise fills out her bikini way better than the anorexic Kareena (please can we have the old one back?). And Brandon’s gone in a blink. The best part about this expensively-mounted film—it goes by at a clip, except towards the end when it gets all emotional, and starts inching towards the altar (no ‘mandap’, this is Hollywood, remember?). But they can’t leave the guy and the gal all illegal and unhitched: this is Bollywood, too.
Perfect for the undemanding-what’s-new-at-the-‘plexes crowd. And the testosterone-fuelled who think canines having at each other is a barrel of fun.

When did a big release get such bad reviews? Its not even a question of mixed bag, its outright negative from the word go.
Last time this happened was Tashan and CCTC. Its not that all reviewers look for masterpieces to give good reviews – movies like Dhoom 2, Om Shanti Om, Welcome or in fact any of Akshay Kumar’s hit comedies had got fair reviews inspite of being no classics.
Incidentally both Tashan and CCTC had opened well depending on their release strategy, and a good opening day for any biggie is always guaranteed. WOM does not seem to good either.
Whether it does 20 cr or 30 cr over the weekend we will see. But depending on how it trends over the weekend and more importantly from Monday onwards will determine its box office verdict.
As for the commentary from certain sites, its all words without any numbers. Some had earlier promised 27 cr opening week for New York, which may itself have been an overestimation after the collections come in.

Rajeev Masand on KI
Kambakkht Ishq vulgar, offensive
How much you enjoy Kambakkht Ishq is directly proportionate to just how low your standards have fallen. This battle-of-the-sexes saga starring Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor is a loud, vulgar and seriously offensive film that has reportedly been made at a price of Rs 60 crore. In that much money, you could feed an entire starving nation. And you’d be blessed for it.
I’m not saying the makers of Kambakkht Ishq have no business spending so much money. I’m just saying, if you must spend Rs 60 crore, the least you can do is give us a good film.
Akshay Kumar plays Viraj Shergill, a Hollywood stuntman who beds a new broad every day but loves his bachelor lifestyle too much to settle for anything permanent. He meets his match in Kareena Kapoor who plays Simrita Rai, a medical student-cum-part-time model who hates the very sight of men, convinced they’re only interested in women for sex. The two of them clash when their respective best friends decide to tie the knot, but things take an unexpected turn when – believe it or not – Simrita accidently loses her musical watch inside Viraj’s body while performing a surgery on him. Mortified that she could be sued for her negligence, she must find a way to get him back on the operation table so she can retrieve the watch. He, on the other hand, can’t seem to figure out why his ears keep ringing with a musical chant every hour.
Watching Kambakkht Ishq, you know you can’t apply logic to a film like this. There are dozens of questions that have no answers – Who allowed her to keep her watch on while performing surgery? What kind of battery does this watch run on for it to break into music every hour inside a man’s stomach? What kind of stuntman can afford a luxurious condo overlooking the sea? Where in the world can you expect to find Sylvester Stallone lurking in alleys waiting to come to the rescue of hapless girls?
I could go on till tomorrow.
The problem with this film isn’t that it’s ridden with logical loopholes. Those you’re even willing to turn a blind eye to, in keeping with the film’s screwball nature. What is inexcusable is the consistently crude tone of the film. So while a scene in which a big black female customs officer practically rips through Akshay’s backside to search for drugs might still make you laugh, what isn’t very funny is a scene in which Akshay farts in Amrita Arora’s face for no reason at all. That’s just sick.
I also don’t see the humor in Akshay and Kareena referring to each other as “dog” and “bitch” repeatedly, and believe me, those are some of the milder profanities they use in the film. Besides, there are innumerable references to sex, virginity and homosexuality, and to be honest many of them just aren’t funny. Like the scene in which Akshay tries to set Kareena up with a girl because she’s made her dislike for men quite apparent. When Kareena responds that she’s not interested in sleeping with either a man or a woman, Akshay is ecstatic at the mystery he believes he’s just solved – “Virgin! You’re a virgin,” he taunts her.
What’s so funny, you ask.
I want to add here that slapping a woman is just wrong, and using that as comedy is plain offensive. In more scenes than one, Akshay Kumar physically abuses female characters – including one in which he slaps Amrita Arora across her face four times. I don’t care that Amrita Arora probably deserves some kind of punishment for her lousy acting, but I’m sorry Akshay, real men don’t raise their hands on women. Even as a joke.
Provocative, but just for the sake of it, director Sabbir Khan resorts to cheap gimmicks for the sake of cheap thrills – like a group of girls flashing their breasts to the men at a wedding reception, and Akshay Kumar grabbing Kareena and smooching her forcibly on the lips.
In terms of performances, there is very little that can be said about both leads. Kareena Kapoor, an actress blessed with scorching screen presence and immense talent, stoops to a new career low with Kambakkht Ishq. I can’t imagine why any respectable actress would agree to play such a crass character and participate in the film’s sexist jokes which include – on at least two occasions – her yanking her neckline down to reveal more cleavage and raising her hemline up to show more leg. Although the film benefits from Kareena’s star wattage, it will remain an ugly blot on her resume. Akshay Kumar, for his part, recycles many of the same jokes from his earlier films and relies on broad physical comedy to draw the laughs. But he’s running out of steam, and the loud, coarse humor is getting repetitive. At his best when he’s comically endearing, one of the most entertaining scenes in the film is the one in which he’s discovered to his horror who will be performing surgery on him. Muttering and cursing her as the anesthesia kicks in, he leaves you in splits.
Judged purely on its screenplay, Kambakkht Ishq spirals downwards in its second half, when the tone shifts abruptly from comedy to sappy romance. Those supposedly emotional scenes in the film’s third act aren’t in the least convincing, and only slacken the film’s pace considerably.
On the upside, Kambakkht Ishq has attractive camerawork, and set in the heart of Hollywood you’re treated to a ringside view of such local attractions as the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Universal Studios and the Kodak Theatre. There is also the opportunity to see a few daring stunts being filmed, but those scenes sadly are too short.
The real humor in this film lies in the clever bits. Like that scene at an Action Awards ceremony where the audience rises to its feet to accord respect to what they think might be the Indian National Anthem when what’s actually playing is that musical marriage chant in Akshay’s body.
Unfortunately such moments are few and far between in what is ultimately a loud, vulgar film. Which brings me to another concern – Kambakkht Ishq has been rated U/A by the Censor Board which means children of all ages can see the film as long as they’re accompanied by an adult. I don’t mean to be a prude, but do we really want our kids to learn about sex from the movies? From this movie?
I’m going with one out of five for director Sabbir Khan’s Kambakkht Ishq. Think of it as Welcome or Singh Is Kinng but about twenty times more tasteless. Of course it worries me that that description might excite some viewers to check it out!
Rating: 1 / 5 (Poor)

I will amend my previous comment. Tashan and CCTC were not universally trashed by all reviewers like this. They got a few 3 star average ratings too. But for KI a 3 star is a rarity.
Usually Akshay’s hit slapstick comedies get ‘fair’ reviews which ends up at 50-55% at allbollywood.com.
Tashan and CCTC assorted reviews were considerably lower than a Welcome or SIK. But KI have surpassed all. Even akshay or Kareena fans are backtracking on their 3 star reviews in order to be taken seriously.
A direct correlation to the box office fate is too early to be made. CCTC had a good opening weekend inspite of being panned by reviewers. BOI had overestimated the weekend business before it realised the extent of WOM and the tanking from Sunday onwards.
Saturday is hardly a fate deciding day for a biggie, but the verdict will only be clear as the week progresses. Even in the worst case around 20 cr weekend shud be there for KI considering the scale of release. Even if this flops it will be another 30 cr flop. On the other hand 2009 may get its first 50+ cr grosser if public actually likes it.

Believe it or not, a KAMBAKKHT ISHQ mania has swept across the nation. The film has opened to an overwhelming response and at the end of Day 1, it was clear that the film would surpass the opening weekend business of SINGH IS KINNG and at places, would be at par with GHAJINI, especially in North India. In fact, the film could well turn out to be Akshay’s biggest opener so far. While the industry response is mixed [like always… what's new about it?], the audience feedback is very positive.

Now yes the movie has been thrashed by the reviews and some people who have really seen it are saying its a bad movie.

Kambakkht Ishq Opens To A Bumper Response
Kambakkht Ishq has opened to a bumper response all over. North India is phenomenal and others parts are super strong. The opening day collections ranged between on 90-100% on a huge volume. The reports are mixed with the youth liking it and families not too keen. But as the the opening is superb it should easily emerge an earner. The collections on Monday will tell if the film will become a big winner or just an earner.
New York recorded excellent first week collections of around 27 crore nett. The film did very well at multiplexes all over the country. The single screens also managed fair collections in some parts but due to the juggernaut opening of Kambakkht Ishq collections fell a lot on its 8th day.

Kambakkht Ishq has grossed a huge 8.50 crore nett on day one taking its total to 9.50 crore nett as it grossed around 1 crore from its paid previews on Thursday.
The first day collections are the second biggest ever for a Friday and around 5-10% lower than the collections of Ghajini on its first Friday due to that film performing better at single screens especially smaller centres. The trade is divided as to what will happen to the film in the long run as some fell it will drop badly from Monday onwards while others are confident of a huge hit.
It will be very interesting to see where the weekend ends for Kambakkht Ishq and what Monday brings.

Indeed, if the supreme silliness of the plot in KI works it’s because of Akshay and Kareena’s glorious goofiness. The lead pair, never in better form, shape, size and looks, gets into the grandly caricaturish groove fearlessly, effortlessly and convincingly, creating the kind of blitzkrieg of belligerence that was last witnessed when Harry met Sally. Celebration time for King Kumar
http://www.glamsham.com/movies.....070915.asp
Ladies and gentleman, Bollywood is back on its feet. And how! After NEW YORK, which took the biggest opening of 2009 so far, KAMBAKKHT ISHQ has taken over the baton and has set records for the best opening day of 2009. The film has raked in close to 10 crores between paid previews and Friday which means that the weekend collections are already staring at a healthy 30 crores net.
While GHAJINI is pretty inaccessible if one talks about the opening week record (the Aamir Khan starrer had netted over 60 crores just from India), RAN BE BANA DI JODI and SINGH IS KINNG were in the vicinity of 40 crores from the first week. Looking at the way KAMBAKKHT ISHQ is progressing at the moment, the film is all set to break the 40 crore barrier, hence being all set to record the second highest collections ever for any film in India.
For Akshay Kumar, it will be double celebration because a) He would be surpassing his own best here and b) He would finally be able to wipe away the disappointment of CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA which by the way had seen the best opening week’s collections before NEW YORK arrived.
The film has scored in a big way amongst the masses and the weekend is all set to see packed houses all over, courtesy heavy advance booking. Just like has been the case with the biggest of money spinners, whether it is RAB NE BANA DI JODI, GHAJINI, SINGH IS KINNG or even OM SHANTI OM, there is a fair share of detractors for KAMBAKKHT ISHQ along with the supporters. However, the fact remains that the film has been so heavily promoted, is on your face and has such huge fan base of both Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor that it is bound to be a comfortable plus film.
Moreover, even though critic reviews have been mixed, youth has warmed up to the film, especially the riotous first half, which has made this Sabbir Khan directed film a paisa vasool affair. Now it has to be seen if this segment of audiences continues to patronage the film and made it just a HIT or a SUPERHIT.

Kambakkht Ishq Grosses 24.50 Crore Over Its First Weekend
Kambakkht Ishq has grossed around 24.50 crore nett including paid previews over its first weekend. The 125 paid previews grossed around 40 lakhs with the Friday to Sunday total being around 24 crore nett.
The film had the second biggest first day in history and the first weekend was the fourth biggest in history. The collections of the film fell slightly at some places on Saturday while Sunday saw very strong collections. Mumbai was affected by very bad weather on Saturday and Sunday which meant lower than expected collections in the area. Delhi/UP and East Punjab are extraordinary and have seen the best collections.
Kambakkht Ishq will be a hit if it can get decent collections over the weekdays but if collections fall heavily it will have a lower status. If collections are strong over the weekdays then it may even turn out to be a superhit.

How Much Business Can Kambakkht Ishq Do In The Long Run?
Q. How did the first day business of Kambakkht Ishq compare with Singh Is Kinng, Ghajini and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi?
A. Around 10% lower than Ghajini, very similar to Singh Is Kinng and around 10% higher than Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi.?
M Sayed
Q. How much business can Kambakkht Ishq do in the long run? Can it do 70 crore?
A. Its very hard to say at the moment. It can get to 70 crore but will have to sustain after the first weekend and also do well in its second weekend.
R Pratap
Q. Would it be right to say that Kambakkht Ishq mega opening is a testament to the huge star power of Akshay Kumar as the film is very bad and has been badly thrashed by all reviewers?
A. Bad film and good film is one’s own perspective and this thing can never be decided as opinions differ. Most big hindi films get bad reviews as reviewers probably come to watch something that is not to their taste as the big films are made to cater to the public at large so the huge investments can be recovered. All the big openers like Singh Is Kinng, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, Ghajini and now Kambakkht Ishq managed records due to many factors like good promotion, hype, hit music as well as the male leads.
Moin Ahmed
Q. How badly have the collections of New York fallen in week two?
A. The second week numbers could be 65-70% lower than the first week

Kambakkht Ishq shatters all records!
Kambakkht Ishq (KI) was the most awaited film this year and true to its hype Sajid Nadiadwala’s Hollywood-meets-Bollywood extravaganza shattered all records.
The opening it received was bigger than that of Ghajini, Singh Is Kinng and Welcome. Sajid has hit the jackpot with this one yet again proving himself to be among Bollywood’s most successful producers. Kareena, who topped the power list last year, is all set to do the same this year with this money spinner. KI has also been lapped up by the international media. A magazine has raved about the film and says, ‘KI has only one desire and that is to entertain’. No wonder then that the audience can’t get enough of this film.
Talking about trade figures, we got to know that the paid previews of KI were a complete sell out. In Mumbai alone 62 theatres that screened the paid preview garnered 100 per cent collection. In most places the early morning shows registered around 90-95 per cent bookings.
Places like Rohtak, Punjab, collected 55,000 net out of 60,000. Amritsar and other such centres will collect Rs 1 Lac. Lucknow showed around 90-95 per cent booking for the morning shows. “Audience reactions are very positive,” says trade-analyst Taran Adarsh. Up North on Friday the movie has turned out to be a bigger hit than Ghajini. “It has shattered all records, “says Taran Adarsh

Very few successes in strike-hit B’wood
As 2009 moves into its second half, the Bollywood box office can look back at just a handful of success stories. While a film producers’ strike resulted in a virtual drought of movies for two whole months, the poor quality of the few that were released didn’t help either. From January to June, about 55 films hit the screens but only six were able to do good business.
Among them Kabir Khan’s directorial venture New York tops the list. This John Abraham, Katrina Kaif and Neil Nitin Mukesh starrer is clearly the hot favourite. Not only is the audience still flocking in, it has raked in about Rs.550 million globally till date. Yash Raj Films has refused to divulge budget details as per company policy.
Next is Dev D, a punk and grunge version of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s Devdas. After making the film, Kashyap has ensured one thing – for the next few years at least, no filmmaker will think of remaking Devdas the old way.
While the KL Saigal, Dilip Kumar and Shah Rukh Khan versions were closer to literature, Kashyap took an altogether tangential route with his version of the film with Abhay Deol.
Made on a budget of around Rs 60 million, Dev D turned out to be a crowd puller when it was released Feb 6 on more than 300 screens globally. It struck gold at the box office by raking in around Rs.130 million.
Kashyap’s Gulaal also did well. Released after Dev D March 13, the film got a good initial courtesy. It raked in around Rs.30 million. Made on a low-budget, it released across 400 theatres worldwide with 200 prints.
Director Vikram K Kumar’s small-budget horror film 13B starring R Madhavan too finds a place in the list.
Made on a budget of Rs 65 million, 13B came with a one-line premise: the human brain is the most complex machinery that the world has ever seen. The film asked a simple question: if we can trust the spirits to possess a human being as a medium to interact with the outside world, why can’t they use machinery to do the same?
In this film, spirits use a TV set to create havoc in the lives of Madhavan and his family members, telling them a story and revealing a crime. What worked most for 13B was its tight narrative.
The film hit the screens March 6 and grossed around Rs 110 million.
Then comes director Zoya Akhtar’s directorial debut, Luck By Chance, which had her brother Farhan Akhtar in the lead.
Luck By Chance had everything going in its favour. Zoya made an excellent debut as a director, but surprisingly audiences didn’t really make a beeline for it. This was truly an insider’s take on the state of affairs, as evident in every dialogue, mannerism and costume.
The critically acclaimed film released Jan 30 over 900 screens worldwide and went on to do moderate business by earning Rs.200 million.
If 2008 had Phoonk as a surprise success, then it was hardly surprising to see Raaz – The Mystery Continues as the bona fide hit of 2009 before New York arrived.
Mahesh and Mukesh Bhatt did an excellent job in promoting the film, the songs were chartbusters and Emraan Hashmi and Kangana Ranaut lived up to expectations. And director Mohit Suri surely came out with a quality product.
It was the first hit of the year after much-hyped Chandni Chowk To China. Made on a budget of around Rs.250 million, the film released Jan 23 and went on to make close to Rs.360 million.
Now the second half of the year seems to have got a good start with Kambakkht Ishq. The Akshay Kumar-Kareena Kapoor starrer has had a good opening.

Kambakkht Ishq Is Fairly Steady On Monday
Kambakkht Ishq held up fairly well on Monday with around 4 crore nett business. The all India business was around 50% lower on Monday than its excellent first day. Some multiplexes did show higher than normal falls but single screens across the country showed healthy collections.
The film has now collected around 28.50 crore nett in India and is heading for a 36-37 crore nett first week which would be amongst the top five best first weeks ever.
The critics have given the film a huge thrashing like Akshay Kumar’s last film big film Chandni Chowk To China but this time the paying public is on the film’s side as it seems the film will be a hit unless collections crash badly from here on.

Even though KI might scrape through as a Hit(Akki will take this one), no one can deny the set up this movie had(dry spell, Summer time, optimum promotion etc), so a 60 cr grosser is a bit of underperformer.

Guys like Taran would be defensive about the film, BOI have been inconsistent with their numbers(some day they say previews did 1 cr,the next day they say previews were just about 0.40cr), different sources seem to be quoting different numbers, Producer throws a party and says the film has done 60cr over the weekend, some reports have Eros claiming a 32cr gross in the weekend in India, yesterday Aaj Tak was seen claiming 46cr in 7 days when the film was not even 7 days old.I would rather wait for the real numbers to come out on Saturday and then see how things stand.
If I were to make a prediction, I would say the weekend could have been around 25cr and heading for a first week of 34-35cr.

Som,
The above incident summarises the entire thing..There has been frantic effort from the KI makers to project the movie as a hit…But they should understand that the audinces have a mind of their own…

Very true Som. You have summed up the situation correctly. Just two days back I was saying with reference to that Mid Day (without getting into the actual number crunching) that ppl who put up the news or numbers are box-office illiterate, compounding the situation.
The latest example is Aaj Tak saying 46 crores in 7 days!

I think it is the Monday figures as compared to first Friday figures would be more apt. That will give a better picture of the WOM unless the first Monday is a holiday or the film has under performed on its opening day.

Kambakkht Ishq Has A Decent Tuesday
Wednesday 8th July 2009 15.30 IST
Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network
Kambakkht Ishq is showing standard industry falls on weekdays. The film grossed around 3 crore nett on Tuesday which is 20-25% lower than Monday. The collections are holding up pretty well amidst the enormous negativity around the film.
Chandni Chowk To China a film which had similar negativity managed 20 crore nett weekend business and 6 crore nett weekday business. Kambakkht Ishq had a 24 crore nett weekend business and is heading for around 12 crore nett weekday business.
Kambakkht Ishq has so far grossed 24 crore approx on the weekend, 7 crore approx on Monday and Tuesday and 40 lakhs approx for paid previews. The all India total so far is approx 31.50 crore nett

So its 31.5 cr till tuesday, lets say it falls industry standard of 25% on wednesday and thursday. That will be
31.5+2.25+1.75 = 35.5 cr.
So the opening week will be around 35 cr, not floppable by any angle.
With no big movies in next 2 weeks, 2nd weekend will play a big part in which way KI goes, but looking at the trending(which is healthy to be honest), 60 cr is not totally out of question.
For 60 cr, KI needs to have 10-11 cr 2nd weekend.

If above numbers are true, then KI is doing good.
But someone is definitely wrong, 46 crore gross number is now published on Eros UK and general site.

Well just like the gross and nett figures, there has been no single figure on the cost. I think ppl are chosing numbers based on their liking and then deciding how to use those numbers to make KI superhit or flop. I will go by what the perception of trade analysts will be on KI same time next week.
With more positivities around KI, it looks to be a clean HIT to me. Whatever small doubts that are coming they from part time bloggers.

5. Media gives KI the boot on Friday, Dick is delighted
6. News of KI’s extraordinary opening shocks Dick but he/she hopes of a big drop on Monday
7. Good collection of KI on Monday, then Tuesday and then other weekdays makes Dick sad

Gorilla – If the above comment is directed at me, then you can call be a ‘Dick’ or a ‘Pussy’ or ‘Ass’ or any other part of human anatomy, the fact remains there are too many gaps and holes regarding KI’s box-office – such ghotala will not be cleared by perception of any trade analyst but some figures from Taran and Komal.
btw, how come you believe KI is a Hit when a part time blogger called Akshay Kumar is calling KI alreadya ‘blockbuster’?

Refrain yourself from using words like “dick”, “pussy” or “ass” as some indirect reference.

Dick is an english name that is commonly used to denote another person ala Tom, Dick and Harry.
Ach, it was not directed at you at all. In fact many points that you have raised, looks appropriate to me. I was making fun of numerous BO blogs/reports by self acclaimed BO pundits on other sites, making a complete mockery of the analysis.
I put the above turn of events in light humor. Can’t imagine i got a warning from moderator on this.
