Bollywood bubble bursts, top actors slash fee
With flops like Yuvvraaj, Chandni Chowk to China and Tasveer the Bollywood bubble seems to have finally burst.
Akshay Kumar, whose acting fees had reportedly hit a high of Rs 75 crore in 2008, has reduced his fees to around Rs 33 crore. So it seems even the Khiladi could not dodge the effects of an economy in recession. “Yes, it is true that I have cut my acting fees. We all have to do that keeping today’s markets in mind,” Akshay said.
The recent two month face-off between producers and multiplex owners has already cost them Rs 100 crore and Rs 250 crore respectively. Add to it, the economic slowdown and producers are being forced to tighten their budgets. They have cut down on star prices, limited the hire of studio equipment, studio floors and even vanity vans.
“When we started Kaminey the markets were different. We had to cut costs after the recession,” filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj said.
Marketing films has also taken a hit. Kambakht Ishq, made at Rs 65 crore, went over budget as a result the plan to fly in the Hollywood talent used in the film including Sylvester Stallone has now been scrapped.
It wasn’t long ago that films like Om Shanti Om and Ghajini were being picked up for unheard of prices ranging from Rs 60 crore – Rs 90 crore. However, the offers aren’t so readily coming in now.
Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan starrer London Dreams which was to be bought by the Indian Film Company for Rs 120 crore at one point of time is finding it difficult to fetch even Rs 80 crore now.
Akshay Kumar and Sanjay Dutt starrer Blue reportedly made at Rs 100 crore is still looking for a buyer. Even one of Bollywood’s most successful filmmakers Rakesh Roshan is reportedly having trouble getting the Rs 100-crore price attached to the Hrithik Roshan-Barbara Mori starrer Kites.
In fact several productions in the pipeline have been affected by the current market scenario. While Big Pictures have scrapped their adventure drama Talisman starring Amitabh Bachchan, Eros has pushed the start date for their animation and special effects heavy futuristic film RA1 starring Shah Rukh Khan.
It is said that everything that goes up at some point does come down, whether it is the stock market, inflation, star prices, or budget of Bollywood films. The only thing certain in this world is uncertainty!

Can’t these guys get original instead of rehashing?
(carefully editing out 3 Idiots from the story)

3 Idiots will be sold for a high price…it’s almost a guarantee. So will My Name is Khan. Aamir and SRK do one or two movie a year so they are not as affected by recession as Akshay where each and every one of his big films (he has what 4 of those this year) are looking to fetch 100 CR.

Thanks for your valuable thoughts.
But the same applies to Hrithik Roshan and Kites- “do one or two movie a year so they are not as affected by recession as Akshay”
But let me stick out my nose and proclaim this – My Name Is Khan will get the highest price, closely followed by Kites and 3 Idiots at number 3.

LOL Tango Bhai – How much did Kites get from Reliance … 120 cr? MNIK will get more in my reckoning too. VVC will be happy to get 100 cr for his 3 Idiots (33.33 cr apiece!)

Thanks Ach bhai.
In case of Kites the only star is Hrithik Roshan with a good director Anurag who does not have any blockbusters to his credit.. In case of MNIK- There is the SRK-Kajol pair (after many years)in aKaran Johar project.
But 3 Idiots has Amir as well as iconic director Raju Munnabhai Hirani along with Kareena, a well known name, so….

I find it bit puzzling when I hear news about 3 Idiots not able to find a buyer. I can understand about a London Dreams(Ajay Devgan and Salman Khan at the box office have been on a downslide) or for that matter Blue(Akshay’s recent mediocre run at box office and an unknown director) but how can a film starring Aamir Khan after Ghajini with Raj Kumar Hirani who has two Munna Bhai films to his credit under the banner of Vidhu Vinod Chopra not excite or interest the buyers, unless the makers are asking some highly unreasonable/unrealistic price?!! At least after Ghajini, no one can underestimate Aamir’s box office pull. In todays time given the right genre, hype,he can open a film as good as other A listers.

Som no one is saying that 3 Idiots is not finding the buyers.
Not only 3 Idiots but London Dreams as well as Blue are not finding buyers at the price they are asking.
They all have to come dpwn to below hundred crore price.

Tango…I thought KITES has already been sold. I would put Hrithik up there with Aamir and SRK as well. The only reason Akshay is not there is because he has way too many movies coming out and all are asking for enormous amount. Akshay does have a pull but the audience don’t miss him like they miss Aamir, SRK, and Hrithik.
3 IDIOTS is almost completed. When the time comes, it will be sold a very high price. Will it be higher then MNIK??? Let’ see.

Also, which has a bigger budget, 3 idiots or MNIK? Both Aamir and SRK will probably get percentage of profits then up front money (more so in SRK’s case since he is buddy buddy with K Jo). MNIK is shooting in the U.S which would drive up the cost. My guess is that MNIK would probably have a bigger budget.

Let’s see Justafan what the final stats emerge as.
I think Kites is still being negotiated to get the best offer.

Yes, common sense does say that both Kites and MNIK will have higher budgets as compared to 3 Idiots.

Before I leave, yet again (with the fear of being dubbed repetitive) nice to see some great discussions going on (even with opposing view points) and no accusations of biased, hater of…., on this ones payrole etc. etc.
Go on NG
