ki31 Jays BO col Kambakkht Ishq bulldozes through boxoffice

http://epaper.sakaaltimes.com/ST/ST/2009/07/06/ArticleHtmls/06_07_2009_104_012.shtml?Mode=1

The Akshay Kumar-Kareena Kapoor starrer is rocking the boxoffice, even as Yash Raj’s New York gets gently pushed to the corner after a superb first week

Sabhir Khan’s directed Kambakkht Ishq launched into an over drive at the box office after a humungous start on Friday. With collections pouring in the 90-100% bracket, the weekend will prove to be one of the biggest ever. All the credit goes to the initial hype surrounding the film with its all out entertainer packaging, it’s “Battle of the sexes” promos,  Hollywood gimmicks and undoubtedly the presence of stars Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor.
Though the opening has been grand, the long term prospects of the film appear mixed. With critics completely berating the film for its crude and senseless script, the audiences thus far have been absorbed in the hype. The weekdays and the second weekend will prove crucial in deciding the fate of Kambakkht Ishq.
Yash Raj films’ New York was gently pushed aside in its second with Kambakkht Ishq taking over the box office; but not before the drama revitalised film business with a very good opening week haul. The John Abraham, Katrina Kaif and Neil Mukesh starrer sustained well throughout the week after decent reviews and good word-of -mouth.
Total collections for New York are in the range Rs 24.5-26.5 crore with Mumbai collecting a fantastic Rs 5.4 crore. The film has done excellent business in multiplexes and has even put up a good showing in smaller centres. The second week has started poorly but this is to be expected considering the mammoth release of Kambakkht Ishq. Ultimately New York should emerge a success overall – the extent of which depending on how well it can stabilise after the hype surrounding Kambakkht Ishq simmers down.
Paying Guests fell hard in its second week with a drop of close to 85% across India. The comedy film netted Rs 0.9-1.0 crore to take its two week collections to Rs 6.9-7.5 crore and emerges as another flop film in 2009.
Releases are coming thick and fast now and this Friday could see as many as four releases; Dekh Bhai Dekh, Morning Walk, Sankat City and Short Kut. The pick of the lot is obviously Short Kut starring Akshaye Khanna, Arshad Warsi and Amrita Rao. Produced by Anil Kapoor, this comedy drama should open decently since the publicity has been high and promos revealing zany comedic moments between the leads.

I would much rather prefer to read Rud’s or Jog’s BO report here. They are far more accurate and well researched without bias

I don’t think we need this biased BO report here. I was happy that it went somewhere else along with the ‘author’ :-)

U gotta be kidding if you do not know JayShah. If the name doesn’t register, then search for his names in the posts.
He was (am hope still is) the Akshay Kumar of NG.

did i ask u not to put it here? i just said that i prefer reading better BO reports from other members here. ithni bechaini kyon sandy ji…..

anyway jay’s reports are usually ok but quite biased. plus i dont believe he has a clue of how bollywood works. he just copies numbers from other sources and uses a formula that works for the case he wants to make. pretty lame. i believe sandy gave him unnecessary credit by publishing the nonsense he wrote

Sandy – I stopped reading his Columns long time ago, when he started fudging numbers to suit his ’stars’. I just thought that when the author does not want to be here, why put up the column. I still believe that the right place for this, is the echo chamber at SS.

But you are free to put it up here.. :-)

Numbers are simply numbers – thoda idhar ya udhar, ki farak painda? In the long run Indian BO is itself fuzzy and fudge-friendly. But I still do not know who Jay is – is he a NG member? Does he post here? If so, what is his NG name?

Okay, last word from me is that I will post Jay’s articles when and if I feel like it. Just like people have a choice to read or not read, I have a choice to post or not post. And in that capacity, it’s entirely about what I consider ‘worthy’

Rud and Jog are great at what they do, and they know I have regard for them. But that need not have any bearing on Jay’s col.
Besides, the col is not only for members, it’s for the blogging traffic in general. And looks like the purpose has been served of getting people to see that KI is doing fabulously well, kyun Gorilla? :-)

‘And looks like the purpose has been served of getting people to see that KI is doing fabulously well’

very rightly said. I do not know why can’t a film that is not liked by many on NG be a HIT? Moreover, there has been more than one writings on the good opening. There is hardly a doubt left about that.
However I can sense trade analysts to be over-cautious in case of KI, despite good opening, as media reviews have been really bad and that its cost is high (45 Cr).

Since no-one has any objection to the posting of pieces by those who were NEVER members of NG, I fail to see what the objection could be to posting pieces by EX-members of NG. Indeed, since it is ok to post non-filmi pieces on NG, there certainly can be no principled objection to anyone posting Jay Shah’s pieces here — it is up to sandy or anyone else (indeed, I would feel myself at liberty to post Jay’s pieces, even if he himself told me not to do so; once his pieces are published in a newspaper, he has no control over them or right to limit dissemination IMO, and it would be none of his business).

I would always prefer links, but if a link isn’t feasible, there isn’t any legal issue with posting absent a link — as long as authorship/attribution is clear, and there’s no confusion about someone else trying to claim credit of authorship.

I am always wary of pieces posted by someone who is not an author, and having no links. How do we know it is an accurate representation of what was said? It is not just about plagiarism but about accuracy. Parody pieces are different.

Is your concern that Sandy will be misrepresenting what Jay actually wrote? IMO, on all blogs one operates under an honor system — because even where links are provided, no-one really goes to compare if the pasted text is an accurate copy of what’s at the original link. That being said, I’d appreciate a link, or perhaps a scan, but the original comments raising an issue were about the fact that Jay’s piece had been posted — NOT that commenters were concerned that the piece attributed to Jay Shah might not actually be exactly what Jay wrote.

    1. This was a general comment about posting unattributed material. You can chose to paste names to the comment, but I am sure I did not do that.

    2. The presence of members, or even moderators, on this or that forum is not a new issue, is it? As I see it, no one was driven out, the exodus was voluntary, and then for a long period the divorce was rather final.

All completely true. And yet none of it impacts anyone’s ability or right to post. Whether Jay is a member or not, whether he wants it or not, people can put up his columns that are in the public domain by virtue of appearing in a newspaper. [Not suggesting you have questioned this right, but just clarifying in case anyone on the forum has questions]. Nor is my point specific to Jay: if someone wants to put up stuff from another blog (mine, yours, satyam’s, Aamir Khan’s, Amitabh’s, whoever), they are free to — in the case of blogs I simply request that we all do the blog author the courtesy of posting a link, and ideally pasting LESS than the complete text (so that we aren’t depriving that blog of hits; also, some blogs can raise issues if the complete text is posted; by posting a link and no more than an excerpt we make it clear that we have no intention of diverting traffic; generally newspapers etc. don’t have too many issues with this sort of thing).

Yes – and I always appreciate a link. Because there maybe more on the site, or other pieces or photos, and what the heck, I may just want to see it for myself. As for not posting entire piece – that is true too.
