Let’s get to the point. The film starts with a bang. So anybody who went to see with moderate expectation (including myself) was pleasantly surprised. How quickly 1st one hour gets over you hardly know. The first half is good entertainment. It has some crude humor taking the comedy to lowest extreme as well as some good hilarious moments making one to laugh one’s heart out. By interval you get the ‘Welcome’ish feel and Akshay’s one liners brings a smile on your face.
10 minutes post interval, your entertainment level heightens till the momentum of the movie changes. The usual ishq vishq scenes starts happening in the most senseless way. Here Kareena to some extent salvages the scene and she really shows her mettle. Thanks to her, the second half becomes less torture, though the emotional scenes does get on to your nerves. It is not that I do not like emotions, it is just that when a movie takes you to a good comical high, you do not expect yourself to be thrown from there into a sea of emotions. The climax helps in picking the momentum and ends with the remix version of Mangalam song.
Surprisingly the song looks good in the movie. Most of the songs are in first half and are entertaining. The two best tracks – Mangalam and Bebo are in the second half and this in some way helps second half from becoming unbearable.
Akshay is at his witty best in first half. His comic timing is superb and his one liner evokes laughter. He shows once again why he is a Superstar. Kareena comes to her mettle in second half and looks delicious. She gives her best performance.
Hollywood actors, for whoever they are, were used like toilet papers in KI. Brandon Routh was made to look like a fool with hardly any role.
Denise Richards – the lesser said about her the better.
Sylvestor – I am still his huge fan. I liked him when he says ‘Kombakatah eeeshq’. Unfortunately his role is hardly of any significance. But in those two minutes scene, he leaves an impact. What a star!
However are these enough to make this film good? Unfortunately the answer is No. Overall the film fails to reach the heights of Welcome or OSO because of the last 45 minutes. It is plain average and sometimes boring. The end result is that the euphoria created by 1st half diminishes. Climax averages things out in the end leaving you with the feel – OK…just what I expected!
Following scenes/sequence are simply brilliant in Kambakkth Ishq:
1. All stunts performed by Akki-They look first rate and make superman look like a fool.
2. First altercation between Akki and Kareena at the church – This really sets up the tempo, mood and characters of the movie
3. Akki’s act as tanned doctor – Akshay just brought the floor down
4. The Business Class scene – This is howlarious and could be performed only by Akshay and Kareena with such attitude and timing
5. Operation theatre scene – Have you ever laughed while watching someone getting operated? In this scene you will. Infact you will clap as well. Akshay is outstanding here
6. Kareena’s act in Bebo. She is delicious
7. Om Mangalam chant that Akshay hears – This goes to director’s credit
8. Climax scene – The last few minutes between Akshay and Kareena is what is called pure Chemistry.
Will it be another Tashan or CCTC? No
Will it be another Welcome? No
It is another Heyy Babyy. 50 Cr looks easy thanks to the huge opening and good first half. 70 Cr looks difficult due to lackluster 2nd half.
Rating: 2.5/5

BOI: ‘The weekend looks set to be huge and possibly the second biggest ever.’
So SIK’s slot looks to be in danger. IMO, Weekend looks set to go beyond 30Cr. This is another big start for Akshay after SIK. I wonder now whether CCTC team missed the bus a little by having paid previews many days ahead of actual release.
I am also certain that KI will be a good solid Hit.If it goes beyond, then it will be a pleasant surprise. Both Akki and Kareena deserves plaudits as they are the two pillars of the movie, which IMO would not have opened this way had these two stars not been there. Their chemistry rocked in promos and in the movie that are to be seen to believe.

Now I wonder why Taran was optimistic but cautious at the same time. He knew the film has merit but also knew that it will not be liked by some. However he considered macro factors like release time, etc and Star Voltage to take the film through. He also knows that second week will not be as historic like the weekend and will take a fall. But with no big release next week, good 1st half, hungery for entertainment juntaa, Akshay factor and Kareena’s oomph, KI has merit. Hence the 3.5 rating. This guy got the BO reading right but the rating wrong by 0.5 as per his standards.
Maybe for the rating of KI, Taran got influence by the bigger mortal – Toran.

I cannot resist to add some superb scenes in my review.

I am pretty sure KI will be a hit and maybe even a big hit. Judging by the audience reaction, (will ignore the critics review as this genre is very hard to grade critically) it is a mixed bag but then so was Welcome and I actually liked Welcome quite a bit. The only Akshay movies I haven’t liked are CC2C, and Tashan. Couldn’t sit through SIK so that does not count. However if KI is even marginally better than any of these 3, Akshay has a huge hit coming his way. In a way the timing of the release is opportune given the excessively dry spell of movies (forget good movies) in BW in the past several months.
I am tempted to check this one out, but will wait for a few more reviews to see how much better or worse this is than CC2C.

Why makers of Kambakkht Ishq thanked Pooja Batra in the opening credits?
Leggy actress Pooja Batra, who starred in films like Virasat, Haseena Maan Jayegi etc., maybe missing from the Bollywood scene after she tied the knot with hubby Dr. Ahluwalia; however she still continues to make her presence felt in Bollywood in a rather unique way.
At the previews of Kambakkht Ishq which took place yesterday, viewers were surprised to see Pooja’s name being featured in the opening credits of the film. Considering that Pooja has been missing from the Bollywood action for a while now, we decided to find out why she was being thanked by the makers.
Speaking to a spokesperson from Sajid Nadiadwala’s office, we got the information we wanted. “Pooja was instrumental in fixing meetings with Hollywood bigwigs such as Sylvester Stallone, Denise Richards and Brandon Routh. Pooja, as we all know, is now based in LA since a few years and when we got to know that she is in touch with some Hollywood bigwigs, we immediately asked her if she could help us set a meeting with some of them. She was more than helpful and coordinated a lot in getting the Hollywood stars on board. Hence, it was apt that we thank her for this sweet gesture,” said the spokesperson.
Pooja was even present at the special screening of the film which took place on Wednesday night.
One thing is for sure, Pooja is well connected not just in Bollywood but even in Hollywood.

Gorilla and SV bhais, dont worry, with a weekend close to 30 cr confirmed, 45+ cr opening is done, and after that with a 55-60% fall, KI is all set for 75-80 cr with a superhit+ tag.
All in line with your predictions Gorilla bhai.
With such a big release, it will be foolish to even think that KI will fall only 50%, although i am ready to be surprised.

yes charles, with 45 crores opening, more than 80 crores gross is possible.Even I predicted the same as gorilla and others.
But now we can increase the prediction.

With -ve media publicity, a fall in collection from Saturday onwards is imminent. I saw the same happenning to CCTC, though it opened to lesser occupancy, and in that case fall started happening from Friday itself. Thankfully Friday has seen extraordinary collections. Now that reviews are out, it has to be seen if Saturday goes with same occupancy. With so many prints out, a film can’t sustain amidst -ve media reviews unless the WOM denies the reviews. If Saturday is sustained, the film will scrape thru.
In other words media reviews has ensured that it’s a battle of survival for KI on Saturday.

Thanks for the review Gorilla — I am glad this film has taken what appears to be such a huge opening, reminding those who needed reminding that Akshay’s frequent releases have become financially important for the industry (let alone to himself, of course)…

i would rather wait for something concrete than emphasize on ‘what apears to be a huge opening’ to remind others of what importance a movie like KI has for bollywood finances or for Akshay himself.

Thanks Q. Akshay is ofcourse now the bloodline of Hindi Film industry. He has two more big releases. If one looks at pure arithmetic, he is at one side and all other are on the other. If Akki’s film is opening at par with the best time and again, what more can one say? Even his so called super-flop netted 32 Cr and was the highest grosser till NY came after 5 months.
One may not like Akshay’s movie off late…but it is no denying that he in many way is deciding if hindi film industry gives more job to industry workers or not.

“NOT a good movie but a one time timepass with FRIENDS”
IMO, your view is apt. It can be a good summary for my review as well
Gorilla 4 July 2009

The good news is that average audience feedback for KI is better than SIK. I am calling it good news because with the kind of media reviews that KI got, there was a feeling that audience may get influenced. Well I still do feel media can influence but looks like KI has somehow overcome that.
Akshay and Kareena are now blasting some of the media reviews and few jealous industry people, in their latest interviews. Gorilla thinks that some of their points looks genuine, though one cannot deny that KI has many reasons for someone to not like. Akshay claimed that KI is now his biggest opening with 19 Cr nett collection by Saturday. (interview seen on Headlines Today). This indeed is praiseworthy and hats off to King Kumar.
Gorilla laughs at few who found the use of words like ‘Bastard’ used once in KI as unfriendly to their senses but can readily accept its hindi counterpart Haraami. No wonder sensibilities are in test with KI!

Gorilla,
I have spoken to about 10 of my freinds who have watched the movie…only one of them did like the movie…Rest 9 of them said its all crap and waste of money….
I dont think with these kind of audinece reaction the movie would survive beyond Sunday…If it really survives then hats off to Akshay..

Beld bhai….Saturday has repeated the success of Friday as per Akshay Kumar. He confirmed the same in his interview when he said that KI has netted 19 Cr by Saturday. Sunday figures are yet to come but am reasonably assured now that Sunday too be a biggie. Monday and Tuesday holds the key.
A fall in monday in imminent…how much will be imp?
However more importantly it will be Tuesday that will be a decider. If Tuesday sustains Monday’s figure, we are looking at a HIT+ in KI. If it drops further, then KI will have to settle for a lesser rating.
