Gorilla
Gorillas are the largest of the living primates. They are ground-dwelling herbivores that inhabit the forests of Africa. Gorillas are divided into two species and (still under debate as of 2008) either four or five subspecies. The DNA of gorillas is 98%–99% identical to that of a human, and they are the next closest living relatives to humans after the two chimpanzee species.......To cut a long story short, I am the kaala bander residing inside YOU!

Thanks to Wimbledon and late night timing of the current cricket series, I have not been able to watch cricket.
But looks like Dhoni has done it again for India. Am I premature to claim him to be ‘Steve Waugh + Bevan’ of India (atleast in one dayers)?

Couldn’t see the match but good that India won. Heartening to see Dhoni and Gambhir getting runs.

Dhoni is a better player than both Steve waugh and bevan in Onedayers…But in tests Steve Waugh is in a different league..

Dhoni better than Bevan? Too early, I would say.

Bevan was a terrific finisher. He had this great ability to nudge the ball for 1s and 2s and also find the boundary, when required. Dhoni, at times, has a tendency of getting bogged down. He needs to work on rotating the strike more often.

Som,
Dhoni’s records speak for himself…Dhoni has better range of shots than bevan…Bevan could only play his shots towards the short leg..He had no strokes in the off side…
Bevans carrer stats.

ODIs 232 196 6912 108* 53.58 74.16 6 46 450 21 69 13

If we compare both the players Dhoni is way ahead of Bevan even after he has played half the matched what Bevan has played..
1.Dhonis strike rate is way ahead of bevan.
2.Dhonis avg is not far behind Bevan.
3.Dhoni has won more man of the Match awards than bevan in allmost half of his matches. That means he has won the team more matches…
4.Dhoni has hit more than 5 times the sixes what bevan has hit.
5.Dhoni is as good a runner between the wickets as bevan was
5.In addition to this Dhoni is a wicket keeper and captain of of the team.
None of the above facts suggest that Bevan is a better ODI player than DHONI…and in tests Bevan was a nonentity…

Arun,
Yes …Bevan was a terrific finisher..so is Dhoni..
At this momnet i have no doubt that Dhoni is a better player than bevan..Yes he can improve upon his deft touches..If he can do that he would be miles ahead of Bevan..

The comparison isn’t just, IMO. Bevan batted lower down the order almost all through the career (5-7), a lot of times with the tail. Dhoni lately has had the opportunity to come up the order. Bevan also didn’t have the liberty of the extended powerplays and batting powerplays in his days.

“”Bevan also didn’t have the liberty of the extended powerplays and batting powerplays in his days.”"
When Bevan played there were power plays…The extended power plays started just one and half year back..This cant be an excuse..
Yes ,bevan played mostly at No.5 or 6…So is Dhoni…At times bevan Playes at No.4 also when the situation demanded..Out of 138 matches that Dhoni has played he must have played atleast 85 pct at no.5 and no.6…
But having said that these cant be excuses…If bevan played lower down the order ,didndt that help him in higher avg because of higher “”not outs”" ??
Its all aboout who have won more matches for their respective teams…On that count, Dhoni is ahead of Bevan…Bevan never reached the Top 3 in the ICC rankings where as Dhoni is their at the top since lastt one year…Bevan is an one dimensional player..he cant blast the opposition if required (As he didnt have wide range of shots)where as Dhoni can play both ways…
I believe bevan is a great ODI batsman…But but i also believe Dhoni is a shed better…

Its not about excuses, it’s about looking at the entire picture.
One dimensional player? He didn’t need to butcher the ball like Dhoni because he was gifted with great timing and had the knack of getting twos at will.
As for ICC ratings, you are completely misinformed in this regard. Michael Bevan topped the ICC player ratings for three straight years – 1999, 2000, 2001 and was in the top-3 in 2002, 2003, 1998 and 1997. That says enough about the kind of domination he had on ODI cricket.

hmm..Bevan used to come after 30th over( with loaded Australian batting line up) and he use to score per ball 30-60 runs; Always rotating strikes and making singles into twos, twos into threes. He hardly use to have 2-3 4s in his fifty. Dhoni has adapted his game from his initial days but I think he still needs to go some distance to be counted in league of Bevan.

I agree with rks that Dhoni has some way to go, although I will say that Bevan played as part of a much stronger unit, whereas Dhoni has to do more carrying of the batting line-up OF LATE than Bevan did…

I saw this match, aur maa behen ki gaaliyan de raha tha until Dhoni hit that six in the last over — us ke baad, like a typical fan, sher-o-shaairi karne laga.
