IIFA 2009

Jodhaa Akbar, Ashutosh and Hrithik not only took the top three coveted awards at IIFA 2009 – Best Movie, Best Director and Best Actor … But this also completes a Hat-trick of complete sweep of the SCREEN, FILMFARE and IIFA Awards this year.

The IIFA Golden Decade awards are a bit dubious though, many wud not agree with SRK being the Star of the decade or Rakesh Roshan being the Director of the decade. Such choices may be justified from a purely commercial point of view, SRK after all gave maximum number of hits in this decade and Rakesh Roshan may as well be the only director in this decade to have three consecutive back to back blockbusters.

Its difficult to disagree with Rahman as the Music Director of the decade and Lagaan being the Movie of the decade. Ash imo is the only actress who was prominent from the start of this decade (Mohabbatein, Devdas) to the end (D2, Guru, JA).

“Outstanding Achievement by an Indian in International Cinema:Aishwarya Rai Bachchan”

What the hell is this? Seems like a new entrant, an excuse rather to give an award to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. International cinema like “Pink Panther 2″ where she doesn’t have even a full-fledged role? or showing up at Cannes every year as a brand ambassador for L’Oreal, something that has absolutely no connection with cinema as such? Gimme a break. The term “International cinema” is used so superficially and loosely by Bollywood these days!

These award ceremonies are such mockeries where the organizers make it a point to award, rather to please everyone.

I do agree with Som that most of the special awards are usually invented in order to give some award to everyone … we have seen this happen most with SRK in this decade … his history with these awards make the organizers compelled to ‘invent’ some new categories to honor him when he isnt the winner in the usual best actor/star category … hence came the power award and so on.

A latest example of this was when Screen Awards 2009 had to invent a new category of ‘Popular actor’ for Akshay Kumar to compensate for his presence! This again ensured that they need to award everyone to get a universal attendence from the stars (a necessity to enhance TRPs) … Akshay thought he wud win the best actor at Screen, felt cheated when recieved a consolatory prize and gave it away to Aamir in anger! And then he is absent from IIFA. Even SRK has been reluctant to attend IIFA due to the Bachchan factor and also unsurity about whether he will get an award, or have to watch hrithik getting it.

Again IIFA has a history of honoring the family members. Last year Abhishek was awarded ‘Style Icon’ or something (For Guru??!!) … this time Ash for achievement in international cinema!

One cannot deny the fact that Ash is the only bollywood star who has global recognition on any platform be it Cannes or Hollywood. But its not that her career is over. Whats the hurry to acknowledge it now? Unless one feels she needs consolation for losing the Best Actress Award to Priyanka despite a Jodhaa Akbar?

Aamir of course loses much more than gaining anything by keeping himself away from these annual industry celebrations … considering the kind of media and press coverage these events are generating … IIFA has even managed to get the international press attention, to that extent the organizers must be happy.

Another interesting observation about IIFA is that its partiality to the Bachchan scion is obvious … the main difference between the winners of IIFA and other awards is that Abhishek ends up winning something only at IIFA!

While SRK for CDI beat Abhishek for Guru everywhere last year, IIFA felt obliged to recognise abhi’s effort by giving him a Style Icon Award … this time they managed to nominate him in the best comedian category and award him.

The obvious question is why wasnt akshay nominated in the best comedian category for his slapstick comedy in SIK? Considering the popularity of SIK at the box-office, did Akshay really have any competition?

But then, abhishek will of course be delighted to get an award (even if its a comedian award) for his only above-average grossing movie since Guru … no wonder he shouted with joy in his acceptance speech – “I am gay!”

But then again box-office is not the only criteria at these awards … maybe the disguise of homosexuality had much deeper meaning and impact with the indian multiplex audience.

Lol Som and Achilles! At least this time there is no MOTORLOOK award and the worst would have been the SLUMDOG MILLIONARE of the year award for kid actors who come from poor families. It would have been more painful had Aamir Khan being awarded the most grandstanding or best amnesiac actor of the year.
On a serious note I would have preferred SRK in RNBDJ over HR in JA for best actor.I don’t think anybody can beat SRK’s dual role in RNBDJ.

OMG they forgot the newcomer of the decade award!

Given the choices, It was fair to give the palm to “Jodha Akbar”(narrative flaws notwithstanding)than something like a contrived “Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi” or a shamelessly over the top “Ghajini” or for the matter the crappy “Race”(It didn’t even deserve a nomination).”Rock On” probably would have been my choice, but still I think it is fine to give it to “Jodha Akbar” considering the populist nature of the award ceremonies.

    Gowariker:

“”When I started this movie I was advised by all my friends not to make the film on a subject which depicted two religions coming together because the situation in the country at that point of time was not right. But I am happy that I made a film which is based on Hindu-Muslim unity”

Someone in another thread said that Gowariker has always maintained that JA was JUST a “love story”.Well, the above is what Gowariker has to say!( and it totally coincides with my views on JA in that thread)

“Talking about JA,its much more than JUST a love story. It about the amalgamation of two people belonging to two different religions ,two different cultures. It about religious tolerance, its about respecting each others traditions and beliefs. The core theme of JA is the most important message to today’s India where even after 60 years of independence, one comes across religious and communal riots happening in some place of the country.A movie like JA is always welcome in such an atmosphere.”

Manoj – I dont think you need to argue against JA being just a love story or not.

The movie is a sincere effort to promote secularism through a historical romance genre. Otherwise Gowarikar could have chosen King X and Queen Y as the main characters. Akbar was the most secular Emperor of medieval India inspite of being a Mughal.

I always felt the editing could have been better to make it shorter and tighter, the war scenes could have been made better. But apart from these two aspects, the movie is indeed a cinematic brilliance as compared to all other commercial movies released in that calendar year – the sweeping of all major awards everywhere is thus not a surprise at all.
