Nottingham: Apparently upset over reports back home, Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Friday presented himself with his entire team before the media and strongly denied there was any rift between him and his deputy Virender Sehwag.

Dhoni, who was scheduled to address reporters on the eve of their opening match against Bangladesh in the Twenty20 World Cup, came to the press conference with the rest of his mates only to read out a statement on the entire team’s behalf which stressed the unity among them.

His brief statement primarily dealt with media reports in India about the alleged rift between Sehwag and him and he firmly squashed it.

However, he did not take any questions.

Dhoni’s comments on Thursday on Sehwag’s injuries and a reply “may be you should ask his physio to issue a press release” lent itself to media speculation of a rift between the two.

This message is for the people of India and for Indian cricket fans world wide and comes from the whole team,” the statement read out by Dhoni today said.

“Recent reports in the Indian media of a rift between myself and Sehwag amounts to nothing but false and irresponsible media reporting,” it said.

Difference of opinion is bound to happen in a group…But at the crucial juncture media choose to highlight the rift between the Skipper and his Deputy…

I strongly disapprove medias irresponsible behaviour…Its India media who were partly responsible for derailing the indian campaign i 2007 WC in WI…

Sometimes i wonder..does the media really work in the interests of our country?

This is the media playing it up as usual.
This post by Prem Panicker says it brilliantly.

I love this last bit –
PostScript: On phone just now from England, my Rediff colleague Harish Kotian informed us that as Dhoni led his team out of the press conference, he tossed a stack of printed copies of his statement at the reporters and said, Here, otherwise you’ll misquote me on this as well [Nahin toh tum log isko bhi ulta likhega].
