Mumbai: After paying tributes to the 70’s and 80’s of Bollywood in Om Shanti Om andMain Hoon Naa, director Farah Khan has set her next film Happy New Year in a “modern and contemporary” world.
“Happy New Year is not like my older films. It is a very modern film, very contemporary,” Farah said when asked whether her third film would also carry the nostalgia of the seventies like her past films.
The movie, which is being produced by Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment, will reunite the successful on screen pair of Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone from Om Shanti Om.
“Happy New Year would definitely go on floors this year unlike what the grapevine has been. I am presently working on the script,” Farah said.
The director, however, refused to divulge the story line of the much-delayed and much-awaited movie.
Despite her professional commitments, which include direction, choreography and judging reality shows, the 44-year-old choreographer-turned-director manages to spend maximum time with her one-year-old triplets.
“Most of the time, I am with my children. If I am shooting in a nearby studio like the Yashraj one, I bring them over to the shoot,” explains Farah, who returns to the small screen as a judge on Sony Television’s new reality show “Entertainment Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega”.
“It is very interesting to find different people doing different things. There have been people who did some really crazy stuff on the show,” says Farah, who has judged dance reality shows like ‘Nach Baliye’ and ‘Jhalak Dikhla Jaa’.
After winning five Filmfare awards and a National Award in 2004 for choreographing Hrithik Roshan’s ‘Idhar chala main’ in Koi… Mil Gaya, Khan keeps her choreography assignments limited to the films of her friends like Karan Johar.
“I cannot say yes to anyone and everyone who asks me to choreograph his film. You have to accept that as a director I am more popular and successful. So I want to concentrate on making films now,” she says while adding that she doesn’t regret the fact that she is no more a full-time choreographer.
In her long career as the leading choreographer in the industry, Khan has made international artistes like Shakira and Kylie Minogue dance to her tunes.
“I think Hollywood stars do a lot of rehearsals. Kylie also practice a lot despite being such a big star. They are more cooperative and disciplined. But here in India, you can never expect that with a star,” said Farah when asked to compare her experience with the two film industries.
Farah has also been roped in to choreograph a song in an Italian film called Oggi Spossi.

What is wrong in what she has said that it’s led to such a violent reaction? I don’t care for Farah Khan’s films, nor her public persona, but it is unquestionably the case that as a successful director she now has the luxury of being able to choose whatever she wants to do.

Big mouth yes.But Farah can make a case for herself as she is probably only female director to have achieved so much success in her first two films.

There are only good directors and bad directors. And Farah is horribly bad and lousy one.

Farah is the ONLY woman director who has proved that she can deliver the BO. Her tracks record in 100% and she can write her own ticket from now on. Still she takes the time to choreograph for people she feels she has old connections with. She said the same thing about her choreography (with no violent reaction – one may note) – that whatever she had accomplished was only being rehashed now – no new ground broken. Having said that – so far she has proved that people like her brand of satire – whether she can do the same with a regular film remains to be seen.
Why all the hate on Farah? Her films are better than Dhoom 2 and Ghajini crap IMO. At least she takes the trouble to craft some satire or spoof and that takes brains instead of just braindead slo-mo fighting with musical interludes.

Welcome back Neelu.
True she has proved herself, making entertaining movies.
But I guess she will become ‘good’ only when she works with certain ‘good’ stars!

True Tango! In reality any vote against Farah or K Jo or Adi is really motivated by the fact they have hitched their fates on one star and ignored others. Tomorrow there will be celebrations and jubilations of they move to other so called actors.

Khoon ki nadiyan beh rahi hotin yahan NG par – LOL! Today the Ghajni mania is over and the so-called fans would rather forget the film and its “path-breaking” music!

I have always maintained that I enjoy all types cinema. I just mentally prepare myself to seeing a ‘paisa vasool’, classy or realistic film.
I somehow cannot bring myself to say “I only watch good cinema.”

People didnt feel cheated after watching Ghajini…but they did after watching OSO – sheer fact is Ghajini trended far better than OSO.
Ghajini was sholey if compared to OSO and Ghajini was crapfest(a-la Mela/Ramjaane) if compared to Paheli.
Just because one is woman if funny to support her…nothing in OSO was is decently good.
neelu 28 May 2009

OSO trended extremely well for a spoof. In fact Farh made spoofs box-office successes, this had not really happened befor either. Ghajini was plagiarized crapfest that is long forgotten now no matter what one compares it to. No one is supporting Farah because she is a woman. If success is a benchmark then she is more successful than Gowarikar, Bhansali et al. These are men I am naming. Compare her to women directors and her success rate is out of their league.

*** “In fact Farh made spoofs box-office successes, this had not really happened befor either”
So if the box -office sucesses if the ONLY crteria then why not count Ghajini?? King of Bollywood was the best spoof thou it didnt do too well on BO.
*** Ghajini was plagiarized crapfest that is long forgotten now no matter what one compares it to
“Long forgotten” in your dreams and you can only hope ppl will foget it.
***No one is supporting Farah because she is a woman.
***Compare her to women directors and her success rate is out of their league.
Contradicting sentenses.
*** If success is a benchmark then she is more successful than Gowarikar, Bhansali et al
If one is proud of Faran only because of this then why not AR Murugadoss who is far far bigger than her and proven to be only southie director who has successfuly made a remake.
ritz 28 May 2009
02:01:56 am
And OSO was very very poor and half baked attempt at spoof. the problem with it was it itself being crap masala movie it made fun of other movies – farah is such a lousy director and moreover I admire her confidence and arrongance when she says – “if you dont understand it you dont have sense of humor” or some such lines etc etc… At least Ghajini did not try to undermine/poorly riducule masala genre while being one crap masala film.
neelu 28 May 2009
02:02:36 am
One cannot count Ghajini as it was a remake of a plagiarized film – what is the credit in doing that? And in this day and age? What exactly did Murugadoss do except dumb down and turn into crap one of the finest films from HW?
I compared Farah to Gowarikar and Bhansali for success rates – that has nothing to do with her being a woman. Murugadoss needs to have some kind of career in Hindi cinema before we can compare him to Farah. Otherwise he will turn out to be like R. O. Mehra!
“only southie director who has successfuly made a remake”
And we were nitpicking about Farah and praising her for being a woman? How much more niche can we get? Is there a specific city Murugu comes from and is the most successful man there? Bhansali and Farhan Akhtar both had successful remakes.
neelu 28 May 2009
02:04:26 am
Ghajini was a spoof? Why would it try to make fun of something when it was taking it self so seriously? Spoofs are supposed to make fun of what they are spoofing – that is the definition.
ritz 28 May 2009
02:10:00 am
Yeah and King of Bollywood and some other stuff was far far better than shit being served as spoof in OSO.
ritz 28 May 2009
02:12:47 am
Bhansali himself has made a pathetic remake. And so did Farah in OSO (under the guise of spoofing). So there is no point in blasting AR Murugadoss who has done far better at BO than those two in remake department.
ritz 28 May 2009
02:21:12 am
there is no difference in spoiling a work of Indian writer by “modernizing” it and spoiling finest hollywood film. Atleast Murgudadoss didnt insult music of original one like Bhansali did.
Maar Daala Vs Saajan Ki Ho Gayi
Chalak Chalak Vs Jise tu kubool kar le
And so all other songs and not to forget horrible comparison:
Dilip Saab Vs Shahrukh Pathaan khan
Bimal Roy Vs Sanjay Bhansali
At least Ghajini did not insult two 3 legends in one shot.

As far as I have noticed, Best of Aamir fans would love to forget ‘Ghajini’. I guess its not wrong to star in one crappy movie once in a while …
Farah has a certain style, which sure has a lot of haters … I am no great fan of her films either. But supporting Murugadoss for God knows what (he made the most revered Ghajini) is little strange.
I have seen some of Murugadoss’s earlier films. I can vouch for the fact that he is hardcore ‘junk film’ director … Farah atleast has a unique style.

I guess everyone is grown up enough that they know what they are saying. I guess we dont want to end up like a dead forum, with one member saying something and others following.
Everyone should say what the want otherwise pent up feelings can lead to things like satyamshot.

I thought OSO was an awesome movie.. specially the 70’s spoof parts. The second half wasn’t worth much.. but the first half was as good spoof can get it. It was smart, witty and all the subtle nuances and special references made it a total classic.
I’ll take OSO not only over all the other top grossing films of the decade.. but even some of those critically acclaimed SrK flicks like CDI.
