Mumbai: Barely a few hours before flying off to Cannes for the screening of his short film on global warming, director Pan Nalin revealed that he is on the verge of a casting coup. For the screen adaptation of legendary Pakistani playwright Saadat Hasan Manto’s short story Toba Tek Singh, Pan will be casting Oscar winners Kate Winslet or Rachel Weisz as Dr Sophie, the female lead.
“Either Kate or Rachel will be doing my film. I will be meeting both of them after my Cannes trip to finalise the casting. Either of them will be able to do justice to this marvelous story,” says Pan.
The hero of the film will be either Aamir Khan or Saif Ali Khan who will play the role of a lunatic in a mental asylum. “I haven’t finished casting for the male lead, but Aamir and Saif fit the role best. I would reiterate that there’s no question of a first or second choice between them. It depends on their availability when the film goes on the floors this August.” Though Pan is not telling, sources say that Irrfan Khan might end up in the film too. According to sources close to Aamir, Pan has already narrated the script to him and Aamir has taken a keen interest. But he hasn’t signed on the dotted line yet.
Talking about the script, Pan reveals, “I travelled to Pakistan to acquire the rights of the short story that describes a comic situation inside an Indian mental asylum in 1947 when India and Pakistan were being created. Dr Sophie comes to the mental asylum to decide how they will be dividing the lunatics lodged there betweenIndia and Pakistan. The comedy thereafter suddenly takes a tragic turn.”

Kate Winslet should be reason enough for either Saif or Aamir to do the film.

Incidentally, both Saadat Hussain Manto and his contemporary Ismat Chugtai were very inconsistent writers. Very good with certain subject, awful with some.
I’ve reviewed one of Manto’s books on films and that one was very good. But this particular one – Toba Tek Singh, I’m not so sure. Need to find out more.

Here is story of Toba Tek Singh. It seems this Saif/Aamir being casted “opposite” Kate or anyone wont be true – as Toba Tek Singh was in mental Asylum…probably Kate or any actress at her place will have guest appearance in role of a British.

After reading the story I feel Iffran can easily be in the casting (as one of the member in asylum). Thou for Toba Tek Singh Saif would fit more than Aamir. He is far better in comedy. But given the dialogue delivery of that only ONE LINE in different moods and style in different situations – Aamir might throw in a punch.

Reports say you have zeroed in on Aamir Khan and Kate Winslet…
That was fast-forwarded news in print. I have spoken to Aamir, but he hasn’t read the script yet. We had met at the Jaipur literary festival. My wishlist also includes Irrfan. Toba Tek, which is the working title, requires good actors. We have the necessary support from investors and producers to hire Hollywood
actors. My agents are in touch with Kate Winslet
and Rachel Weisz’s agents and their feedback has been positive. I’ll only begin meeting them from June/July.
When do you begin shooting?
n That would be from October/November. We plan to shoot in Gujarat and Rajasthan, where we are looking for a huge complex that can be turned into a mental institution.
