Dev.D. enters cult-film league
2009 hasn’t yet made the half-year mark that it has proved to be pretty unconventional already. First, the current multiplex strike which should have been predicted long ago funnily came as a full-swing surprise to filmmakers who are still fighting tooth and nail for some measly justice of an additional two percent profit ratio, and still remain unperturbed by exorbitant star remunerations and increasing budgets.
Second, two solo Akshay Kumar-starrers ( Chandni Chowk to China, Tasveer 8×10 ) failed to take off at the box-office, in spite of being the typical masaaledaar formulaic film that people assumed could not go wrong! Third, A.R.Rahman was making waves worldwide but his first musical back home this year – Rakesyh Mehra’s Delhi 6 bombed at the box-office crashing all expectations one had from the RDB genius. SRK, too, couldn’t make Billu… work despite his much-hyped item songs and extended guest appearance.

We need another definition of cult. A film that merely breaks new ground in exploring some “taboos” is hardly a cult film.
